NYC mayoral polls: Early voting ends today; check who's on ballot for primary elections

New York's mayoral election is shaping up to be a close contest between former Governor Andrew Cuomo, incumbent mayor Eric Adams, and filmmaker Mira Nair's son Zohran Mamdani. Sunday, June 22, is the final day for early voting ahead of Tuesday's primary election in the United States' most populous city. Polling sites across the city will remain open from 9 am to 5 pm local time to allow voters one last opportunity to cast ballots before June 24. The NYC Board of Elections stated that over 300,000 New Yorkers have already cast their ballots during the eight-day voting period, ABC News reported. Officials emphasized staying hydrated and avoiding long lines in the midday sun. Candidates make final weekend stops, from Harlem to Queens On the campaign trail, leading candidates made their closing pitches to voters across the five boroughs. Four Democratic candidates for mayor appeared together at the National Action Network's Harlem headquarters on Saturday, posing with civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton. Cuomo, for his part, held a campaign stop with the mother of murdered teen Junior Feliz Guzmanan, stressing a return to law and order. 'We need more police. New Yorkers don't feel safe now,' she said. Cuomo echoed the sentiment, declaring, 'Public safety must be the foundation.' NYC mayor elections: Who's in the fray? According to a Politico report, Andrew Cuomo, who resigned in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations, is attempting to make a political comeback. He has expressed regret over his resignation and positioned himself as a seasoned leader capable of addressing the city's challenges. The report stated that Cuomo, despite his controversial past, is a favorite among many voters, including those who are disillusioned with the current political landscape. In contrast, Mamdani, a progressive candidate backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, is advocating for bold reforms like city-owned grocery stores, and a focus on affordability which is appealing, particularly to young voters. He may face challenges in getting support from the traditional Democratic base, particularly older voters. The results of the primary polls will decide who becomes the next mayor of New York City and also show which way the Democratic Party is headed in a city that is trying to figure itself out. Meanwhile, voter sentiments are a mix of frustration and hope as many New Yorkers are looking for a leader who can tackle their issues while dealing with the fast-changing political scene. FAQs What time do polls open for early voting in NYC? On Sunday, polls are open from 9 am to 5 pm at select locations across the city. How many people have voted early in NYC? Over 300,000 New Yorkers have cast ballots during the eight-day early voting window. Who are the leading Democratic candidates? Several prominent figures including Adrienne Adams, Zohran Mamdani, and Brad Lander are in the spotlight ahead of Tuesday's primaries. How is the heatwave affecting the election? PM Keir Starmer criticizes Kneecap's Glastonbury performance—Internet reacts

Image credits: Getty Images Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom recently stated that he doesn't think Kneecap- an Irish band's planned performance at the Glastonbury Festival is appropriate, inciting a lot of online debate. Kneecap, is an Irish hip-hop trio from Belfast, Northern Ireland composed of three members, Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí. In an interview with The Sun, Starmer was asked if the trio should perform at the annual performing arts festival when he said: "No, I don't, and I think we need to come down really clearly on this." "This is about the threats that shouldn't be made, I won't say too much because there's a court case on, but I don't think that's appropriate." Kneecap responds to the PM Image credits: Getty Images On Saturday, the band of three took to social media to respond to the prime minister's comments, writing, "You know what's 'not appropriate' Keir?!" They then used an expletive to accuse him of arming a genocide. One of the members of the band, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh has been in court charged with a terror offence, for allegedly displaying a flag at a gig in November in support of Hezbollah, which is proscribed as a terrorist organization by the UK. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo Charged under the name Liam O'Hanna, the member was released on unconditional bail after Wednesday's hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court. We'll be at Wembley in September. But most importantly: free, free Palestine." There have been a multitude of protests to stop the war and save the people suffering from it. Thus, the band joining in and giving the plea a more global platform was appreciated by most. And the PM criticising them was not taken lightly by their fans. "Awww. Did the PM not get free tickets?" wrote a person on X. "Don't think arming a genocide is appropriate, personally. So I'll side with the cheeky Irish lads." wrote another in support of the trio. "He is less appropriate than Kneecap ever will be" pitched in another. "The man who supported the cutting of electric water and food to Gaza. Now wants to interfere in the freedom of media and curtailing freedom of speech" condemned an X user.
