Tamil Actor Srikanth Questioned For Drug Purchase, Links With Peddlers

Tamil actor Srikanth is being questioned by Chennai Police for the alleged purchase and use of drugs besides links with drug peddlers.
Police sources say the actor's blood samples have been sent for medical investigation to ascertain drug usage.
Confirming that the actor was questioned at the Nungambakkam police station, a senior police officer told NDTV, "This is an ongoing investigation, it has not concluded yet. We will share details once this is over".
Recently, the police had arrested a former AIADMK member following a brawl in a pub. Police sources say that the member's questioning led them to connect the dots, leading them to Mr Srikanth.
This comes amid the opposition's allegations of free availability of drugs and a rise in drug abuse in the state. The state government has denied these allegations.
Recently, the state police chief Shankar Jeewal said, "Tamil Nadu is not a drug manufacturing state and it's a victim state. The state is being used as hub for smuggling to other countries". He added that according to a survey by the central government, use of drugs is negligible in the state. He also assured that the issue is being taken seriously and stringent action will be taken.

"Hate Speech Won't...": Top Court On Man Arrested Over Social Media Posts

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday took a strong exception to communal tweets by Wajahat Khan, the complainant in Sharmistha Panoli's case, who is now himself under arrest over social media posts. The top court said that hate speech won't take us anywhere. In a relief to Mr Khan, the top court today said that barring the current proceedings in which he is under police custody in West Bengal in two FIRs, no coercive action should be taken against him in FIRs filed in other states. Mr Khan had recently filed a complaint against social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli over her communal videos on social media on Operation Sindoor. However, he was arrested by Kolkata police after his past communal tweets surfaced. He approached the Supreme Court seeking quashing or clubbing of FIRs registered against him across 6 states, including Assam, Bengal, Maharashtra, Haryana and Delhi. The top court issued notice to 6 states returnable by July 14. These FIRs in other states have been stayed till the next hearing. The bench also ordered that no coercive action be taken against him on any FIR that may be registered in future over the same allegations. Senior Advocate Dama Seshadri Naidu appeared for the Khan in the top court today. At the outset of the hearing, the bench questioned the counsel over his tweets. "You have not annexed the tweets? The bench of Justice KV Vishwanathan and NK Singh at the outset questioned the counsel appearing for Wajahat Khan. "My tweets are deleted and I have posted an apology", his counsel told the court. Terming these posts as "hate tweets", the top court expressed concern and also quoted a Tamil proverb which roughly translates to "wounds inflicted by fire may heal, but not the wounds inflicted by tongue." Mr Naidu, appearing for Mr Khan, told the court that FIRs are registered across multiple states; he can't be expected to go to those states. The counsel also read out the apology tweet written by him to "Hindu brothers". Mr Naidu further argued that the complaints were filed in retaliation for his complaints against social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli, who is out on bail. FIRs have been filed against Wajahat Khan in several states for inciting religious sentiments and posting hate-mongering material. Wajahat Khan is currently in police custody after being arrested by Kolkata Police on June 10.

SC halts deportation of Sri Lankan Tamil, seeks govt reply on Switzerland visa plea

New Delhi, June 23 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday stayed a 2019 deportation order issued against a Sri Lankan Tamil immigrant and sought a response from Indian authorities regarding his request to visit the Embassy of Switzerland in person to process a humanitarian visa application. A bench comprising Justices KV Viswanathan and N Kotiswar Singh issued notice to the respondent authorities, noting that over five and a half years had passed since the said deportation order was passed by the government on November 20, 2019. The petitioner, currently held at the Trichy Special Camp, had approached the apex court challenging the deportation order and seeking permission to physically visit the Swiss Embassy. His earlier plea was dismissed by the Madras High Court in December 2024. Senior Advocate Jayanth Muth Raj, appearing for the petitioner, emphasised the imminent danger to the petitioner's life if deported to Sri Lanka, stating, 'Don't deport me... all my family members have been eliminated. I am not a threat to India. If Switzerland grants a humanitarian visa, I will go there instead of getting killed in Sri Lanka.' Muth Raj informed the bench that the petitioner has spent nine years in India, three in prison and six in detention and had already been acquitted in a human trafficking case in 2019. He also submitted that the petitioner was willing to cover the expenses for any security officer assigned to escort him to the Swiss Embassy. When Justice Viswanathan asked about the urgency of listing the matter during the court's partial working days, the counsel cited grave and continuing threats to the petitioner's life, noting that his father, sister-in-law, and brother had been executed, not during combat, but after being apprehended. The petitioner has reportedly received an email from the Swiss Embassy requiring his physical presence for visa processing. The matter will be further heard after the authorities file their response. Tamil actor Srikanth arrested for allegedly buying cocaine from drug cartel

Tamil film actor Srikanth, also known as Sriram Krishnamachari, 46, was arrested on Monday by the Nungambakkam police of the Greater Chennai Police for allegedly buying cocaine from a drug cartel. The cartel includes a Nigerian national who was recently arrested. The authorities are on the lookout for actor Krishna, who is believed to be in Kerala. A senior police officer confirmed the arrest and said Srikanth had been in regular contact with three drug offenders arrested recently. 'Our investigation revealed that he procured and consumed cocaine... Further investigation is under way,' the officer said. Srikanth made his big screen acting debut in the 2002 Tamil film Roja Kootam. He has also starred in notable films like April Maadhathil (2002), Parthiban Kanavu (2003), Okariki Okaru (2003), and the Tamil remake of 3 Idiots, titled Nanban (2012). Srikanth has received multiple awards, including Nandi Awards and Filmfare Awards. To combat drug-trafficking, the Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU) operates under the supervision of Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun. It gathers intelligence on ganja and synthetic drugs, identifies offenders and networks, and works with local police stations to make arrests. On June 17, based on the ANIU's inputs, the Nungambakkam police arrested Pradeep Kumar, alias Prado, 38, of Sankari in Salem, and John, 38, a Ghanaian national, after they were found in possession of 11 grams of cocaine. During interrogation, Pradeep said he had supplied drugs to T. Prasad, a dismissed AIADMK functionary, who sold the cocaine to Srikanth at a Nungambakkam pub last month. Brawl at bar Prasad, along with his associates, had been arrested earlier in connection with a brawl at a bar. Further investigation revealed that he had also been involved in a job racket, cheating a Hyderabad businessman. Police sources said Prasad had worked in film production with Srikanth and the latter frequently socialised with the offenders. The police searched Srikanth's residence in the Nungambakkam Lake Area, where cocaine in small quantities was allegedly seized. On Monday morning, Srikanth was detained for questioning and then arrested after his blood test came back positive for narcotics. He was examined at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. Sourced from Bengaluru The cocaine was reportedly sourced from Bengaluru through Pradeep and John, who purchased it for ₹7,000 per gram and sold it in Chennai for ₹12,000. Mr. Arun has directed the ANIU and the local law enforcement agencies to intensify surveillance and crack down on organised narcotics trafficking. Investigations are under way to apprehend other individuals linked to the syndicate.
