Opera's new 'fully agentic' browser can surf the web for you
It was only earlier this year Norway's Opera released a new browser, and now it's adding yet another offering to an already crowded field. Opera is billing Neon as a "fully agentic browser." It comes with an integrated AI that can chat with users and surf the web on their behalf. Compared to competing agents, the company says Neon is faster and more efficient at navigating the internet on its own due to the fact it parses webpages by analyzing their layout data.
Building on Opera's recent preview of Browser Operator, Neon can also complete tasks for you, like filling out a form or doing some online shopping. The more you use Neon to write, the more it will learn your personal style and adapt to it. All of this happens locally, in order to ensure user data remains private. Additionally, Neon can make things for you, including websites, animations and even game prototypes, according to Opera. If you ask Neon to build something particularly complicated or time-consuming, it can continue the task even when you're offline. This part of the browser's feature set depends on a connection to Opera's servers in Europe where privacy laws are more robust than in North America.
"Opera Neon is the first step towards fundamentally re-imagining what a browser can be in the age of intelligent agents," the company says.
If all of this sounds familiar, it's because other companies, including Google and OpenAI, have been working on similar products. In the case of Google, the search giant began previewing Project Mariner, an extension that adds a web-surfing agent to Chrome, last December. OpenAI, similarly, has been working on its own "Operator" mode since the start of the year.
Neon, therefore, sees Opera attempting to position itself as an innovator in hopes of claiming market share, but the company has a difficult task ahead. According to data from StatCounter, only about 2.09 percent of internet users use Opera to access the web. Chrome, by contrast, commands a dominant 66.45 percent of the market. That's a hard hill to climb when your competitors are working on similar features.
It's also worth asking if an agentic browser is something people really want. Opera suggests Neon is smart enough to book a trip for you. That sounds great in theory, but what if the agent makes an error and books the wrong connecting flight. A certain amount of friction ensures users pay attention and check things on their own.

Foldable phones like the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Oppo Find N5 have redefined smartphone design. But ultimately, what most people just want to know: How good are the cameras? I snapped photos on both book-style foldables to see how the cameras stack up. Each phone had its strengths, from sharpness to texture to life-like colors, and they took turns claiming the "winner" title. In general, you won't find the best phone cameras on foldables because of their design. A thinner phone calls for a smaller sensor and lenses, meaning even the best foldable cameras will be a step behind those on regular candy bar devices like the Pixel 9 Pro XL or Galaxy S25 Ultra. Still, if you're set on buying a foldable, you'll at least want to ensure you're getting the best camera possible. That's where this comparison can help. First, let's start off with some camera specs. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a 48-megapixel wide, 10.5-megapixel ultrawide and 10.8-megapixel 5x telephoto camera, along with two 10-megapixel selfie cameras, one for the inner screen and the other for the cover screen. It starts at $1,800. It costs $2,499 Singapore dollars, which converts to roughly $1,870 -- but it isn't available in the US or Europe. Aside from camera specs, one of the biggest selling points of the Find N5 is how thin it is. While the Pixel clocks in at 10.5mm thick when closed, the Find N5 is just 8.93mm. It's important to note that more megapixels don't automatically mean better photos, so I tested these phones' cameras in the real world. Here's what I found. Pixel 9 Pro Fold vs. Oppo Find N5 photo comparisons One of the biggest differences between photos on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the Oppo Find N5 is that the latter depicts more vivid colors. In these shots of tulips, you'll notice the reds and yellows of the petals in the Find N5 picture are brighter, as is the pool in the background. Even though there are slightly more shadows in the Pixel photo, you get more texture, especially in the petals and the bricks in the foreground. This boils down to personal preference, and each photo has its strengths. The Find N5 adds vibrancy, but the Pixel does a better job of showing more true-to-life colors and details. Abrar Al-Heeti/CNET In these portrait mode shots of my friend Raneem, you'll see the biggest difference is that the Pixel crops in closer, which I'm not particularly crazy about, but it's how the phone achieves that blurred background. Both phones do a great job with that bokeh effect, and my friend's face looks well-lit and clear in each. This one's a tossup, but ultimately, I like the more even tones and slightly cooler colors on the Pixel photo. At the same time, I like the sharpness of Raneem's features on the Find N5 photo. Again, the Find N5 brightens things up more than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, but the Pixel maintains a more true-to-life tone, especially with the grass. Overall, both pictures are crisp, but you'll notice more subtle details like the tree branches in the Pixel shot being sharper and the blades of grass being more discernible too. Abrar Al-Heeti/CNET These nighttime images taken in my living room show how each phone deals with harsher shadows. You'll notice how much deeper the dark colors are on the Find N5, like the writing on the accent pillow and the shadows around the lamp and in the lower left corner by the pink chair. I think the Pixel 9 Pro Fold does a better job evening out those shadows and creating a more consistent overall shot, so that's getting my vote here. A night time shot on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold features .5x, 1x, 2x and 5x optical zoom, while the Find N5 has .6x, 1x, 2x, 3x and 6x optical zoom (zoom levels achieved partly thanks to sensor cropping). Again, the Find N5 tends to brighten up shots and reduce shadows, and I appreciate having a 3x zoom option for when you want to get close, but not too close. The biggest thing that stands out is how much more the wood door's staining is amplified in the Find N5 shot, which is a bit excessive for me. You'll also notice the pink flowers on my jumpsuit pop more. Both phones do a good job depicting my skin tone and adding a nice overall smoothness to my features. I like how the Oppo Find N5 brightens up some shots, but generally, I prefer the more true-to-life and even tones served up by the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, especially with images of people. The Pixel also tends to do better with low-light photos by minimizing shadows. The good news is you'll get clear, well-lit shots with both phones -- which you'd certainly hope for, given their hefty price tags. Whether you're zooming in, snapping a selfie or tapping into portrait mode, each phone has a lot to flex, beyond those foldable screens.

I didn't expect Google Lens to become one of the most useful tools in my routine. I've mostly used the platform close to home, really almost daily, to identify shells I find when I walk on the beach or to translate package labels on foods I pick up from my local Asian market. But recently, I found it helpful on a few trips to solve real-world travel problems, from identifying weird weather to spotting sketchy vacation rentals. Google recently shared new ways travelers can use Lens' Visual Search features this summer and beyond. To learn more, I spoke with Dounia Berrada, senior director of engineering for Google Lens, about how the team is trying to make the camera a more intelligent search aid and travel companion. Google Lens has a few limitations, considering most of the features can't be used in offline mode. Still, it might be the smartest free tool already sitting on your phone. "Everyone is familiar with how you can ask questions with text and voice. With Google Lens, you can also ask questions with images," Berrada said. I use this feature at least weekly when I visit Cuban restaurants here in Florida or visit my favorite Asian markets and need help reading the packaging. I simply hold up my phone, tap the Lens icon in the Google app and the screen's text transforms into English in real time. The text doesn't come up as a pop-up, but appears directly over the original words of whatever I'm needing to translate. During travels, this feature can help translate street signs, public transport maps and menus. Verify vacation rentals before you book The other day, I was perusing Airbnbs in Costa Rica, since I've always wanted to visit. I saw a suspiciously underpriced rental, so I reverse image searched the listing photos using Lens. Turns out, the same pictures appeared on a real estate site for a property in another country. That was enough of a red flag for me to walk away and think about Costa Rica another time. Berrada told me Lens wasn't designed specifically to catch scammers, but giving people more visual context before making decisions on lodging is very much part of the product's mission. For me, it's an easy way to do some quick background checking, so I feel more confident in where I'm staying, and I'll probably use it anytime something feels off. That was me just a few days ago when I was standing in front of a surreal piece at the Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg. It also allows you to speak your question aloud while snapping a photo. It's kind of like turning to a friend and saying, "Wait, what is this?" and getting an answer right then and there. Deep dive with the About this image feature Macy Meyer/CNET When I was visiting my older sister in Tulsa, Oklahoma, recently, I snapped a photo of some bizarre clouds that looked almost like a thick, wavy blanket covering the entire sky as far as the eye could see. I've never seen anything like it before. I used the About this image feature in Google Lens to figure out what I was actually looking at. It showed me how the photo (and ones like it) were being used across the web -- from weather blogs to social media platforms to fact-checking sites -- and helped me learn that these are undulatus clouds, appearing as "cloud streets" since they look like parallel bands or rows. Whether you encounter an odd image online or in real life, this tool provides quick context and helps you understand what different sources are saying. Summarize and translate text from a photo Google When you're traveling, you never know what kind of text you'll run into that'll need translating -- menus, handwritten signs, museum placards, notes from an Airbnb host. With Google Lens, you can snap a picture of any text and instantly get a summary, ask questions about it or copy it to your clipboard. The feature can also annotate the image, such as highlighting dishes on a menu that meet your dietary preferences, so you're not stuck translating. I can imagine using it to quickly find vegetarian dishes on a local menu or to make sense of a scribbled transit schedule at a rural train stop. Berrada said she has personally used this feature to translate recipe cards in French that her mother gave to her, so she can share the English translation with her husband. Whether you're navigating a new city or just trying to decode a note left by your Airbnb host, it's a handy tool for making the unfamiliar feel a bit more manageable. Get souvenir details instantly when traveling Google Imagine you're wandering through a street market in Tokyo or browsing a boutique in Lisbon and spot something you'd love to bring home — a unique canvas tote bag (my personal souvenir of choice), a pair of sunglasses or a handmade clothing item. With Google Lens, you can snap a quick photo and instantly pull up product details, including prices at other retailers, current deals, shopper reviews and shipping information if you're wanting to ship it back home. It's an easy way to figure out if you're getting a good price or if it's worth waiting to buy later. Even in a store, Lens can show you if similar items are in stock elsewhere nearby or online, whether the price is competitive and what other travelers or shoppers have said about it. It takes the guesswork out of impulse buys, especially when you're on the go. "This is my absolute favorite use case with Lens. I love it for shopping," Berrada said. Berrada explained that the tool taps into a massive shopping graph with over 50 billion listings that are constantly updated and drawn from both online sources and local stores. It then shows the exact product you're looking at, along with the best available prices, so you can compare options before making a purchase. If you're not set on buying that exact item, Lens also provides visually similar alternatives and products with comparable features, such as lightweight materials or enhanced durability. She also shared a personal example from a recent trip to Paris, where she used Lens to scan apparel she saw in a store. The feature helped her decide whether to buy the item locally or wait until returning home, factoring in currency differences and availability of local brands. Siemens Is Battling Big Tech for AI Supremacy at Factories
In a new Siemens AG factory that makes large switchboards for data centers in Fort Worth, Texas, artificial intelligence is doing a lot of work. The demand for switchboards is surging as companies build out AI foundation models that power this new technology, but Siemens wants to do more than supply widgets for AI; the German manufacturer also wants to provide AI infrastructure. The Munich-based company announced earlier this year that it would build its own foundation model that's focused on industry. This pits Siemens against companies spending billions on AI, such as Alphabet Inc.'s Google and Nvidia Corp., which are betting their massive models can be fine-tuned to specialize in automation and industrial applications. Although the capabilities are underpinned by the big model, the fine-tuning cuts out the clutter, bad information or hallucinations to make the models safe and efficient for industrial use.
