4 arrested for illegal entry at Malaysia–Thailand border

RANTAU PANJANG: Four individuals, including three foreigners, were arrested by the General Operations Force (GOF) for entering Malaysia via an illegal route here yesterday.
GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said they were arrested at the Tok Awang Belulang illegal jetty at about 3.15pm.
He said the four, comprising two men and two women, were detained by GOF personnel from the 18th Battalion during a routine patrol under Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan.
"The boat operator fled upon realising the presence of police, abandoning the passengers at the riverbank.
"The group comprised a local man and three foreigners," he said.
Ros Azhan said an initial investigation showed that the 30-year-old Malaysian man is believed to have acted as a facilitator for the other three individuals, all of whom are Thai nationals.
"The foreigners were found to have entered the country through an illegal route without proper documents," he said.
The local suspect was detained under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, while the Thai nationals were held under Section 6(1) of the same Act.
He said all four were taken to the Pasir Mas district police station for further action.
"Two of the male suspects also tested positive for methamphetamine," he said.
Nik Ros Azhan said enforcement efforts at the border have been intensified since Dec 1 last year, following a police-enforced ban on border crossings in a bid to curb smuggling, human trafficking, and drug-related activities along the Malaysia-Thailand border.
"The GOF remains committed to cracking down on cross-border crimes and will continue to strengthen its presence to safeguard national security," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested a group of armed robbers in less than 24 hours after a robbery at a house in Taman Viana, Jalan Bakam, Buletin TV3 reported. Miri district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said a team was immediately dispatched to the double-storey semi-detached house after receiving an emergency call via the 999 hotline. "However, by the time police arrived, the group had fled. "Based on public information and intelligence, we identified and arrested four suspects in less than 24 hours," he said in a statement today. The four suspects, arrested earlier today, include one Malaysian man and three foreign men, aged between 38 and 57. During the raid, police also seized various items believed to have been used in the crime, including a knife, a cutter, a mask, and the vehicle used by the group. They also confiscated jewellery, watches, identity documents, purses, and cash believed to belong to the victims. Farhan said the syndicate is believed to be involved in a string of armed robberies around Miri between 2024 and 2025. "All suspects have been remanded for seven days from June 20 to 27 to assist with further investigations," he said. He also reminded the public to stay vigilant and enhance the security of their homes by installing fences, grills, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, and alarm systems.

Two injured in Sandakan lorry blaze

The Fire and Rescue Department received the emergency call at 11.09am and arrived at the scene seven minutes later. The 1.5-tonne Isuzu lorry, loaded with 45 LPG gas cylinders, was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Both the driver, a 50-year-old Malaysian man, and his Indonesian assistant sustained burns to the shoulder and hands, and were treated by Health Ministry personnel. GOF foils attempt to smuggle 19,000 kg of white rice

KOTA BHARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) has foiled an attempt to smuggle 19,000 kilogrammes of white rice from Thailand along Jalan Kampung Air Gatal, Tanah Merah, as part of the 'Op Taring Wawasan' operations yesterday. GOF Southeast Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the seizure was made after a GOF's 9th Battalion team spotted several men loading white sacks into the back of a trailer. 'However, all the suspects fled into nearby bushes upon realising the presence of the police,' he said in a statement today. He said an inspection of the trailer found 19,000 kilogrammes of white rice, believed to have been smuggled from Thailand and intended for sale on the local market. 'The seized rice, along with the trailer, is estimated to be worth RM426,000. The case has been handed over to the Kelantan Paddy and Rice Regulatory Authority for further action,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 20 of the Control of Paddy and Rice Act 1994. Meanwhile, Nik Ros Azhan said in a separate operation, his team also foiled an attempt to smuggle 11 cows after intercepting a lorry that was being driven suspiciously in Kampung Telaga Bata, Tumpat, last Thursday. 'An inspection found 11 cows in the back of the lorry, and the driver failed to produce any valid documentation for the livestock. The driver, a 28-year-old local man, was arrested,' he said. He added that the total value of the seizure, including the lorry, was estimated at RM151,000. The case has been handed over to the Kelantan Department of Veterinary Services for further action and is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953.
