Schoolly D inducted into Philadelphia Music Alliance Walk of Fame

CBS News18-03-2025

Philadelphia's music history is filled with legends, and one name that stands out is Schoolly D. Known as one of the forefathers of gangsta rap, Schoolly D put Philadelphia on the map in 1985 with his hit, "P.S.K. (What Does It Mean?)".
Although the Bronx is widely recognized as the birthplace of hip-hop, Schoolly D carved out a lane for himself in the genre. His sound, distinct from the rapid-fire delivery of New York rap, helped shape the direction of hip-hop and influence future generations of artists.
"New York rap was very fast. I slowed it down. I talked about 52nd and Parkside and what it was like for a teenager to grow up smoking, drinking, driving his car … going to parties on the south side," Schoolly D said.
He was raised in West Philadelphia during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
"It was very Black conscience," Schoolly D said. "I remember the fear of the Black Panthers coming. Cats were getting drafted to Vietnam."
Despite the challenges of growing up in a tough environment, Schoolly D believes hip-hop brought a sense of hope and inspiration to his community.
"When hip-hop came, it was incredible. It was magic," he said. "We were beautifully ignorant at the same time."
Now, after decades of pioneering the genre, Schoolly D is being honored with an induction into the Philadelphia Music Alliance Walk of Fame.
Alan Rubens, chairman of the Philadelphia Music Alliance, spoke about the significance of the honor, saying, "His music has been sampled by so many artists around the world. So we thought it was time to give Schoolly D his star."
This year's Walk of Fame induction class also includes Stephen Sondheim, Janis Ian, David Ludwig, David Dye, The Orlons, and Settlement Music School.
Philadelphia Music Alliance will honor and celebrate Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Jordan Mailata on behalf of the Philly Specials for their "Philly Special Christmas" albums, and
Sir Bob Geldof in recognition of Live Aid's 40th anniversary
.
Since its inception in 1986, the Walk of Fame has recognized the city's diverse musical heritage with 140 bronze plaques along the Avenue of the Arts.
Rubens emphasized the importance of celebrating the diversity of musical talent from Philadelphia, "It is classical, it is Broadway, it is soul, it is pop… rock… We want to bring to people's attention that Philly has so many wonderful legends and touched so many genres of music."
"I'm really honored. Philadelphia, we changed the world," said Schoolly D.

"They Always Do Black Girls Hair Dirty": Antonia Gentry Had To "Clear Up Some Things" About Her Hair On "Ginny & Georgia," And Here's Why It Has Caught The Attention Of Nearly 14 Million People

Antonia Gentry stars as Ginny in Netflix's "Ginny & Georgia." Season three was released earlier this month. Since its release, the show has been hugely popular, but one detail fans have increasingly noticed is the change in Ginny's hair each season — and it is striking up viral conversations on TikTok. So, Antonia decided to make her own TikTok explaining the whole situation: "Hello from my hotel room. Hi everyone. Thank you so much for watching season three of "Ginny & Georgia." I hope you're enjoying it. I wanted to pop on here for a second and clear up a couple things. I've been seeing some very funny things circulating about my hair, so I just wanted to clear up some stuff," she starts. "My hair is not naturally straight. I don't know who started that, or why anyone would believe that — I'm half Black. I didn't get a perm to play Ginny, my hair is naturally curly. My mom has a beautiful afro. My dad has a wave to his head. So, I have tight curls. And also, I understand that, Ginny's hair from seasons one, two, and three is very, very different. So let me just explain..." "Season one, that is my natural hair. It's my natural hair. Season was a little bit of a challenge for some people to work with my hair. So, you know, it was mostly my hair, but we had a little bit of heat damage in there. It randomly got bleached for no reason — and four inches got cut off." (Here is her hair in season one.) "So, when we went into season two, I was like, 'Hey, my hair got pretty damaged in season one. Can I get a wig?' And they were like, 'All right, bet. We'll give you a wig.' And I was like, 'All right, bet I'm getting a wig.' There were two wigs for season two, and those two wigs were curled very interestingly, and it didn't really work. It wasn't working." "So for like, half of season two, I'm in this wig that doesn't really match my actual hair, it has no movement. And so we stopped using the wig, but in order for us to have it, it was like a continuity thing. They took a wand to my hair and curled each and every section of my hair to match the curl pattern of the wig. So my hair was put through heat every single day to match the pattern of the wig, which we ended up not even using the entire time because it didn't look right. So that's why there's some interesting hair choices for Ginny in season two." "But season three, it's my natural hair. It's all my hair, except for the extensions, of course. And Ginny has long hair, and I had someone who did such an amazing job. We didn't use any heat, we took care of it, we kept it moving, and I didn't have to worry or stress out at any moment in the hair trailer. Shout out, Stacy. So, yeah, my favorite hair moment for Ginny is season three, because that's the healthiest my hair has ever been filming the show." (This is what Ginny's hair looks like this season.) "I hope that that clears up the mystery of my hair. It's not naturally straight. I don't have a perm, a curly perm. Obviously, I have a little bit of heat damage. My hair is styled all the time for work, and also, just personally, I like to switch it up." "When I was a kid, I had very tight, healthy curls — very full hair, and now I have a bit of heat damage, and my hair is a little bit thinner. We're working on it. Take your vitamins... But I don't have straight hair. I got curly hair. Okay, love y'all, bye." ESPN's Jay Harris shares major health update after prostate cancer reveal

'SportsCenter' anchor Jay Harris said he is recovering from a successful surgery to remove his prostate after revealing his cancer diagnosis earlier this month. 'My doctor said the surgery went really well,' Harris said. 'So well, in fact, that the cancer that was in my prostate stayed there. It didn't spread to any surrounding areas. So when he took the prostate out, he took that with it. So it's all good. Harris added he'll be resting at home and will return to work next month. 'There are other details that I won't bore you with, but the main thing is, we're all good.
