India calls for urgent global action to protect ocean, commits to early ratification of High Seas Treaty

NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday called for urgent global action on ocean health at the 3rd UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, with Union minister of earth sciences Jitendra Singh urging the international community to invest in innovation, ratify the 'High Seas Treaty', and finalise a legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution.
'The ocean is our shared heritage and responsibility,' said Singh, expressing India's readiness to work with all stakeholders - govts, the private sector, civil society, and indigenous communities - to ensure a sustainable ocean future. He was delivering the country's statement at the conference.
One of the core objectives of the five-day conference, which is co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, is to help bring into force the landmark 'High Seas Treaty' - Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement - adopted in 2023 to safeguard life in international waters through long-term protection of marine biodiversity in the high seas.
Once ratified by 60 countries, it will become law of the sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction. Fifty members (49 countries and the EU) have already submitted their ratifications, while 15 others, including India, committed to doing it soon, paving the way for its coming into force in the next four months.
Singh, while addressing the conference, also highlighted the multiple measures being taken by India in sync with its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: Life Below Water, and outlined how the country's initiatives are aimed at reversing ocean degradation through science, innovation, and inclusive partnerships.
He shared the progress made on India's Deep Ocean Mission and its 'Samudrayaan' project, which is expected to deploy the country's first manned submersible by 2026. The project aims to explore ocean depths up to 6,000 meters and is seen as a major leap in India's scientific capability.
A nationwide ban on single-use plastic items of high littering potential, implementation of over $80 billion worth of 'Blue Economy' projects, supporting a legally binding global plastics treaty, and the launch of the 'SAHAV' digital ocean data portal are some of the initiatives which found prominence in the minister's speech at the global forum.
The SAHAV portal - a GIS-based decision support system - works as a tool to empower policymakers, researchers, and communities with real-time spatial data, enabling smarter planning and stronger marine resilience.
Singh also spoke of expanding India's marine protected areas, which now cover 6.6% of the Exclusive Economic Zone, contributing to global biodiversity goals. He underlined that India has integrated ocean-based climate actions into its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

If approved, the centres will offer aspiring athletes access to modern training facilities, expert coaching, and professional-grade equipment. The centres, aligned with the national Khelo India scheme, will be developed using existing infrastructure such as schools and community centres. HD Deva Gowda asks PM Modi to help farmers as mango rates crash, weather hurts

BENGALURU: Former prime minister HD Deve Gowda on Sunday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, seeking the Centre's intervention in helping Karnataka's mango cultivators, who have suffered a double-whammy of unpredictable prices and bad weather. Karnataka is a major contributor to mango production globally, Gowda pointed out, requesting the Centre to initiate a Price Deficiency Payment and Market Intervention Scheme for immediate fruit procurement in Karnataka through NAFED and NCCF, which will support farmers and alleviate rural distress. 'Further, mango is one of the major horticultural crops of Karnataka, cultivated over an area of 1.39 lakh hectares, particularly in Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban, Chikkaballapura, Kolar, and Ramanagara districts, with an estimated output of 8-10 lakh tonnes during the rabi season. However, due to inclement weather and diseases, the mango yield has dropped to less than 30 per cent this year, according to farmers,' Gowda wrote. 'Prices fell from Rs 12,000 per quintal to Rs 2,000, while the cost of cultivation was Rs 5,466 a quintal. This has financially stressed the farmers, with many small and marginal mango growers unable to cover even basic costs,' he elaborated. He said Andhra Pradesh's ban on Totapuri mangoes from entering Chittoor district, which borders Karnataka, has disrupted the supply chain, risking post-harvest losses for the state's border mango growers, noting: 'This has created tension among the mango growers leading to protests in many districts, especially Kolar and Chikkaballpura.' Gowda also mentioned that the Karnataka Chief Minister and Chief Secretary have asked the AP government to revoke the ban immediately.

Operation Sindhu: India to operate 3 more evacuation flights as 1,713 nationals return from Iran

The Indian government will operate three additional evacuation flights from Iran over the next two to three days as part of its ongoing 'Operation Sindhu', Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita said on Sunday. So far, 1,713 Indian nationals have been evacuated from conflict-hit Iran. The latest batch of 285 Indians arrived in New Delhi late on June 22 on a special flight from Mashhad and was received by Minister Margherita at the Airport. This marks the eighth batch of Indians brought home as part of the ongoing operation. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the latest group included people from several states such as Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, reported ANI. In a post on X, the MEA stated, 'India's evacuation efforts continue under Operation Sindhu. MoS Shri Pabitra Margherita received 285 Indian nationals evacuated on a special flight from Mashhad that landed in New Delhi at 2330 hrs on 22 June.' "With this, 1,713 Indian nationals have now been brought home from Iran," the MEA added. Meanwhile, MoS Margherita, in a post on X, expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing operation, stating, "Warmly welcomed 285 Indian nationals at the Delhi airport who were evacuated from Iran under Operation Sindhu. With this, 1,713 Indian nationals have been brought home safely from Iran.' The evacuated Indians thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian Embassy for the safe return and recalled the grim situation in Iran. Suja Ali told ANI that the embassy brought them to a safe zone. Ali said he went to Iran on June 11, and the attacks started on June 12, while he was in Qom. The embassy later brought them to a safe zone 1,200 km away. 'When the attack happened this morning, we were at the airport and we thought that Iran might close its airspace. But it is PM Modi's diplomacy and the Indian government's arrangement that we reached here safely," he added. Another evacuee, G Alama Jaan, said, "The situation was worsening there. The Indian embassy brought us here. Now we will go from Delhi to Srinagar by bus. I am grateful to the government for bringing us here safely," reported the news agency.
