Johor-Singapore SEZ gains momentum as Anwar reaffirms Putrajaya's commitment to governance and growth
KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 — The federal government will continue to support efforts to ensure infrastructure and facilities are at the highest level to strengthen investor confidence and the overall success of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) as a catalyst for new growth in Johor.
In a Facebook post, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he appreciated Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi's briefing on the progress of foreign investment, especially in JS-SEZ.
'Alhamdulillah, this initiative between the two countries has succeeded in attracting high interest and confidence among investors to invest in Johor,' he said.
The Prime Minister, who arrived in Johor this morning, said he attended several important planning events, starting with the Johor State Development Special Meeting in Kota Iskandar with the Menteri Besar and state and federal leaders.
'In this meeting, I reiterated my commitment to efficient governance and integrity, especially in the aspects of management, finance and administration.
'This includes the issue of the people's security and health in the implementation of projects involving the procurement of equipment and services.
'We need to adopt a wise approach and think outside the box so that the savings achieved can be channeled to other more urgent needs, especially in the fields of public health and education,' he said.
The Prime Minister said the state government also presented development projects that are priorities in Johor, including the issue of raw water supply, access systems at Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) in Sultan Iskandar Building and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex.
'The presentation also involved the operation of Pasir Gudang Hospital, land affairs as well as several pre-implementation projects that are currently being planned,' he said. — Bernama

Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the reintroduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) remains unsuitable for now, citing the rakyat's low income threshold as a key concern. Speaking during the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly, Anwar explained that although GST is recognised as an efficient and transparent taxation mechanism, it imposes a comprehensive financial burden — particularly on low-income earners. 'We postponed (GST) because the income of the people was still too low. My opinion at the time was that people with an income of RM2,000 were still affected although we gave some exemptions,' he said. He highlighted how even though basic necessities such as sugar and rice may be exempt, GST still applies indirectly when people purchase other goods or use public transport. 'It is comprehensive,' he noted. The government, according to Anwar, would only revisit GST implementation when the average household income reaches a more reasonable level — at least RM4,000 a month. 'Let the people's income increase first… maybe at that time we can (implement it). Right now, there are people earning RM1,700 or RM2,000,' he said. For now, the government is focused on a more targeted Sales and Service Tax (SST) system. He said tax revenue collected through SST will be channelled into core public sectors such as education and healthcare. 'The allocation for the Ministry of Education from RM58 billion in 2024 has increased to RM64 billion this year. Similarly, for the Ministry of Health, RM41 billion last year… we are adding RM4 billion to make it RM45 billion,' Anwar said. GST was introduced on Apr 1, 2015, with a standard rate of 6%, but was later repealed on Sept 1, 2018, following widespread criticism over its impact on consumers, particularly those from lower income brackets. It was replaced with the SST system. On 9 June, the government announced a targeted review of the Sales Tax rate and an expanded scope for the Service Tax, effective 1 July, aimed at strengthening Malaysia's fiscal position by increasing revenue while protecting essential goods from new taxes. KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 – Malaysia has temporarily shut its embassy in Iran and ordered the immediate return of all diplomatic staff following escalating tensions in the Middle East, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said today. New Straits Times quoted him saying the decision was made in response to a wave of Israeli airstrikes on Iran, with Malaysia joining several other countries that have already withdrawn their diplomatic missions from the country. 'I have instructed all embassy personnel, including the ambassador, to leave. All Malaysians have been asked to exit Iran,' he said. He added that some have declined to leave, including three students in Qom and one in Isfahan, who are based far from Tehran. Last week, Putrajaya said all Malaysians currently in Iran have been strongly urged to leave the country immediately amid the heightened security situation following Israel's aggression against Iran. The Foreign Ministry said the situation in Iran remains highly volatile and may take a turn for the worse without warning. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil previously said that the government would evacuate all Malaysians from Iran yesterday. Yesterday, the Ministry of Higher Education said it will continue to monitor Malaysian students currently in Iran after identifying seven there, although the exact number remains uncertain as some are there under self-sponsorship.
