Cannes Film Festival bars Dossier 137 actor accused of rape in new #MeToo policy

CANNES, France - The Cannes film festival barred an actor in a prominent French film from the red carpet on May 15 because of sexual assault allegations, unveiling a new policy under pressure from lawmakers and activists.
Theo Navarro-Mussy plays a police officer in a supporting role in the film Dossier 137 by Dominik Moll, which premiered on May 15 in the festival's main competition.
According to French magazine Telerama, which broke the news, three former partners accused the actor of rapes in 2018, 2019, and 2020 but the case was dropped in April for lack of evidence.
The three plaintiffs, all actors themselves, told Telerama they planned to appeal and file a civil lawsuit.
Cannes Festival director Thierry Fremaux confirmed to Telerama that Navarro-Mussy had been excluded from the world's premier film festival because an appeal was under way.
'The judicial process is still ongoing,' Fremaux was quoted as saying, in remarks confirmed to AFP by a spokesperson.
The treatment of Navarro-Mussy - if it becomes the basis of a consistent policy - would imply that any actor or director under active investigation for sexual assault would be excluded.
It would align Cannes with the Cesar Awards, France's equivalent of the Oscars, which announced in January 2023 that nominees convicted of or under investigation for sexual assault would be barred.
Navarro-Mussy, 34, who had a breakthrough role in the French medical TV drama Hippocrate, denies the allegations but he told Telerama he understood the decision by festival organisers.
He did not join his co-stars including renowned French actress Lea Drucker on May 15 as they made their way up the red carpet to the premiere.
Inquiry
Elsewhere on May 15, a vice-president of one of the parallel film sections at Cannes was suspended after being publicly denounced for sexual violence during an event.
The executive from the ACID Cannes section has been suspended pending an investigation, the organisation said.
In the past, Fremaux has sought to avoid taking a clear stance on the numerous sexual assault cases that have dogged figures in the film industry, particularly since the #MeToo movement.
He faced criticism from some activists in 2023 over the choice of the film Jeanne Du Barry to open the festival, which starred Johnny Depp.
The movie marked Depp's comeback after a toxic court battle with ex-wife Amber Heard that revealed his turbulent private life involving alcohol, drugs and domestic abuse allegations.
The #MeToo movement shook the French film industry from 2017, as it did Hollywood, exposing widespread sexual misconduct and challenging a long-standing culture of silence.

A recent French parliamentary inquiry into the entertainment industry, sparked by allegations of sexual abuse by actor Judith Godreche, found that the mistreatment of performers was 'endemic'.
Inquiry chair Sandrine Rousseau, an outspoken feminist lawmaker from the Green party, called on the Cannes Festival to set an example when the findings were published in April.
'The Cannes Film Festival must be the place where this shift in mindset happens,' she said.
'Worried'
Navarro-Mussy said he was 'worried' about his career, adding that he hoped the fact the case against him had been closed was 'taken into account'.
'I have explained myself to the justice system and at this stage have been cleared,' he told Telerama.
His lawyer said that he had not been notified of any appeal against the decision to close the investigation.
Moll, the director of Dossier 137, told AFP he was unaware of the allegations against the actor before starting to work with Navarro-Mussy 'and during the film nothing happened'.
Moll's prize-winning previous film, The Night Of The 12th, tackled the issue of violence against women.
He said he was 'very sensitive to this issue'.
Allegations of rape between partners are among the most difficult to prove, meaning prosecutors rarely take them to court unless there is clear evidence.
French screen legend Gerard Depardieu was handed an 18-month suspended sentence on the opening day of the Cannes film festival this year after being convicted of sexually assaulting two women on a film set in 2021.
In other firsts at Cannes this year, the festival announced a new dress code that outlaws extravagantly large outfits that clog up the red carpet as well as 'total nudity'. AFP

Diplomatic efforts to end the three-year war have stalled, with the last direct meeting between the two sides almost three weeks ago and no follow-up talks scheduled. 'Another massive attack on the capital. Possibly, several waves of enemy drones,' said a statement from Mr Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration. Two people were hospitalised in the Solomianski district, said Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, and two others were injured near a metro station in the Sviatochinski district, Tkachenko later said. AFP journalists in Kyiv heard the buzzing of a drone flying over the city centre and explosions, as well as gunfire. They saw around 10 people sheltering in the basement of a residential building in central Kyiv waiting for the attack to end, most of them scrolling their phones for news. The latest strikes came after Ukrainian commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky vowed to intensify strikes on Russia. 'We will not just sit in defense. Because this brings nothing and eventually leads to the fact that we still retreat, lose people and territories,' he told reporters, including AFP. Mr Syrsky said Ukraine would continue its strikes on Russian military targets, which he said had proved 'effective'. 'Of course, we will continue. We will increase the scale and depth,' he said. Fair response Ukraine has launched retaliatory strikes on Russia throughout the war, targeting energy and military infrastructure sometimes hundreds of kilometres from the front line. French police probe fake Disneyland ‘marriage' with nine-year-old

PHOTO: PIXABAY PARIS - French police were probing on June 22, the circumstances of a bizarre stunt at Disneyland outside of Paris, with a group of adults suspected of hiring the theme park and paying hundreds of extras to stage a fake marriage for a nine-year-old Ukrainian girl. Two people were held for questioning in the case, which initially caused alarm when staff alerted police on June 21 that it could have concerned an illegal child marriage. But investigators now believe that the so-called 'marriage' was staged, with the girl's mother reportedly saying that she wanted her to feel like a Disney 'princess' for the day. 'The event turned out to be a staged event, with the guests themselves extras' invited to be part of the stunt, deputy prosecutor Alexandre Verney said. 'So it wasn't a wedding, but a staged wedding filmed with around a hundred extras. They hired Disneyland Paris, pretending it was a real wedding,' he told AFP. Four people were arrested and taken into custody, and the questioning of two of them – suspected of fraud and money laundering – was extended on the evening of June 21. They are, a 22-year-old 'presumed to be British', so-called 'groom' who is believed to be behind the event, and a Latvian woman, 24, said a source close to the case. However, the other two people detained – a 41-year-old Ukrainian woman, and a 55-year-old Latvian man – were released. The investigations, including a medical examination of the nine-year-old girl, a Ukrainian national, found that 'she had not been subjected to any violence or coercive acts,' the prosecutor's office said. According to the Le Parisien daily, which first reported the incident, a man had several weeks previously hired the Disneyland Paris complex for a sum of 130,000 euros (S$192,556) for several hours before it opened to the public. Staff were astonished when the nine-year-old appeared wearing high heels on the morning of June 21, barely able to stand in the elaborate footwear, and they alerted the authorities, it said. Le Parisien said the man who organised the event had submitted false documents concerning his identity and Disneyland filed a complaint. Hundreds of extras were bussed in to play the part of the guests, it said, while the girl's mother told investigators she wanted to organise a 'day worthy of a princess' for her daughter. Police arrest 12 as wave of syringe attacks mar France street music festival

Millions of people took to the streets across France on the evening of June 21 for the Fete de la Musique, with authorities reporting 'unprecedented crowds' in Paris. Before the party, posts on social media had called for women to be targeted during the festivities. The interior ministry said 145 victims across the country had reported being stabbed with needles. Paris police reported 13 cases in the capital. Officials did not say if these were cases of so-called needle spiking with date-rape drugs such as Rohypnol or GHB, used by attackers to render victims confused or inconscious and vulnerable to sexual assault. 'Some victims were taken to hospital for toxicological tests,' the ministry said. In Paris, investigations were opened after three people including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old male, reported being stabbed in separate incidents across Paris, prosecutors said. Thirteen members of law enforcement were also injured. The prefect of the Paris police, Laurent Nunez, said that 'no major incident has been reported'.
