Nagpur: Divya Deshmukh's 74-move win over World Women's No. 1 Hou Yifan has once again brought the Nagpur girl into the limelight. During the seven-day World Rapid and Blitz Team Championship in London, the 19-year-old International Master (IM), representing Hexamind Chess Club, secured as many as three medals — two bronze and a silver.
Speaking exclusively to TOI, Divya shared her experience of playing alongside the world's best players, including Levon Aronian, Murzin Volodar, Anish Giri, and Vidit Gujrathi. Divya said, "The best moments were definitely the blitz knockouts and also the entire team spirit. Everyone was really friendly, and everyone got along really well, so it took away the pressure to perform. Levon, Anish, and Murzin helped me with advice, practice games etc, which was super nice of them.
And, of course, the banter."
Despite suffering a defeat against Yifan in the first leg of the round-robin semifinal, Divya remained positive and came back stronger to prevail over her experienced opponent. In the second leg of the semifinal, Divya utilised her opening advantage with the white pieces well and made her moves faster to take control of the clock for her first-ever victory over Yifan.
Explaining her strategy for getting the better of Yifan, Divya said, "I knew I had to go all out. I would have been automatically scared if the thought of playing against the World Champion had crept into my mind. So, it did not matter whom I was playing against; I focused on the game, and I only knew that I had to win the game."
On her future plans, Divya said that she is preparing for the forthcoming World Cup. She added, "I am focused, and my preparations are going well. I will give my best and will try to bring medals in future tournaments."

WATCH: Lionel Messi Turns Back The Clock With Scintillating Freekick At FIFA Club World Cup
Last Updated: Lionel Messi's freekick secured Inter Miami's 2-1 win over Porto at the FIFA Club World Cup, marking the first competitive victory for an MLS team over European opposition. Class is permanent and timeless. And Inter Miami's Lionel Messi proved it yet again, as the Argentine curled in a peach of a freekick to score the winner for Inter Miami in their 2-1 upset of Porto at the FIFA Club World Cup on Thursday. The World Cup-winning Argentine, who has made scoring freekicks his bread and butter, wound the clock back to produce yet another magical moment and seal the unexpected win for the MLS team, significantly boosting their chances of advancing from Group A. Messi's goal, which turned out to be the difference maker, marked the first competitive victory for an MLS side over European opposition, following Chelsea's win over Los Angeles FC earlier in the week. 'It's a huge joy, the whole team made a big effort, we worked really well," Messi told DAZN. 'It's a really important win for us and we have to enjoy it. You can see that we want to compete, and today we competed against a really good European team. We knew that today we were weaker, but we had our strengths." Inter Miami and Palmeiras each have four points, following the Brazilian side's 2-0 win over Al Ahly earlier. Al Ahly and Porto both have one point. '(Messi) is a leader, he's the greatest player in the world," Inter Miami forward Fafa Picault told DAZN. Following Messi's tiebreaker, Inter Miami fought hard during stoppage time to keep Porto at bay, as Mascherano's players threw themselves in front of shots in a manner reminiscent of the former Argentine defensive midfielder, ultimately securing their much-desired victory. 'Beyond his goal… he's a player who shows us how to compete, his hunger, his desire to continue competing at whatever level it is," Mascherano told reporters. 'In a footballing sense, what else is there to say? He's the best player that has played this sport in its history, but what is surprising is his will to win. 'Today, even in the last minutes, tired, with a knock, he kept helping the team in any way he could, in attack, in defence, to get the result… 'We know having him gives us an advantage, but above all, through his contagious spirit, the winning spirit that he has."

CONCACAF Gold Cup 2025: Shaky USA Seal Quarterfinal Spot With 1-0 Win Over Saudi Arabia
Last Updated: Chris Richards' goal secured a 1-0 win for the U.S. over Saudi Arabia, advancing them to the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals. Coach Pochettino kept the same lineup. Defender Chris Richards scored with a deft flick off a second-half free kick, propelling the United States to a 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia on Thursday night and securing their spot in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals. Richards skillfully tracked the ball as it curved into the box from a 62nd-minute free kick by Sebastian Berhalter, tapping it with his left foot past Saudi goalkeeper Nawaf Al Aquidi. Chris Richards gives the U.S. the lead! — Gold Cup (@GoldCup) June 20, 2025 This win, combined with the 1-1 draw between Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti in Group D's other match in Houston, guaranteed a knockout stage berth for the Americans. They now have an impressive record of 42 wins, one loss, and five draws in group play. The U.S., having topped their group in 16 of 17 Gold Cups, will conclude Group D play against Haiti on Sunday in Arlington, Texas. USA Lacking Proven Firepower U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino retained the same lineup that delivered a 5-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, marking the first time he made no changes in consecutive matches since taking charge last October. However, against 58th-ranked Saudi Arabia, the 16th-ranked Americans showcased little of the attacking prowess seen against the 100th-ranked Soca Warriors. The match, held before 11,727 spectators in a half-full Q2 Stadium, saw few goal-scoring opportunities for either team. The Americans managed only one shot in the first half, while Richards' speed covered for Alex Freeman's mistake to prevent Saudi Arabia from taking an early lead. Matt Freese earned his second consecutive start in goal for the U.S. and his third in four matches, seemingly having displaced Matt Turner. The Gold Cup serves as the last competitive test for the Americans ahead of the 2026 World Cup. As co-hosts with Mexico and Canada, the U.S. automatically qualifies for the World Cup. With many top players absent due to personal reasons, injuries, or participation in the Club World Cup, Pochettino selected a roster filled with relatively untested and unproven players. Regulars missing from the tournament for the U.S. include Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Gio Reyna, Antonee Robinson, Folarin Balogun, and Sergiño Dest.
