Kraaifontein man sentenced to life for killing two police officers

A man who gunned down two police officers during a patrol in Kraaifontein has been sentenced to two life terms and 47 years in prison.
Mxoleleni Sikhahla, 36, was convicted in the Western Cape High Court for the February 2021 killings of Sergeant Mnakwazo Mdoko and Constable Mninawa Breakfast.
The sentence was handed down on Wednesday, June 19, 2025, following Sikhahla's conviction on nine of 10 charges.
The murders took place in the early hours of February 28, 2021, when Sergeant Mdoko, 44, and Constable Breakfast, 32, were ambushed while on patrol in Nondakuthini Street, Bloekombos.

Warrant Officer Zinzi Hani, spokesperson for the Hawks, said the officers were seated in their patrol vehicle when they were attacked.
'They were fatally shot while in their patrol vehicle,' Hani said. 'It was further reported that Mdoko and Breakfast were declared dead on the scene and their official firearms were robbed in the early hours of 28 February 2021.'
The officers were ambushed at about 1.25am, according to the investigation.
Sikhahla was found guilty on two counts of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, three counts of possession of a prohibited firearm, and contravention of the Firearms Control Act.
He was acquitted on one charge of attempted murder.
The court ordered that the sentences on all counts except the first would run concurrently with one of the life sentences, resulting in Sikhahla effectively serving life imprisonment.
He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The attempted murder charge arose from the shooting of a woman who was also in the police vehicle during the incident.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said she was shot in the head and initially not accounted for.
'Please note that the attempted murder charge against Mxoleleni Sikhhala relates to a woman who was shot in the head. She was also in the police van,' he said.
A police source close to the investigation said the woman's presence only became known later.
'When cops arrived in Phumla Street, there were only two occupants in the van.
'There was a trail of blood, and at the time, no one suspected that there was a person there. It was only discovered about a day later that there was a woman who was also shot during the incident.'

Williams drove the hitmen to the property and they gained access via a security gate at about 4am and entered the couple's flatlet. '[Kulsoem Dennis] heard the voice of an intruder asking where the money was in Afrikaans before brutally attacking her. The intruder hit her on the head, neck and chest with a gun. She chanted, 'Allahu-Akbar' [God is Great] until she hit the floor. Severely injured and in shock, she lay on the floor, pretending to be dead as her [headscarf] fell softly over her face and she kept her eyes closed,' said Ntabazalila. Her husband was attacked as he came out the bathroom and died after being stabbed 15 times. Ibtisaam Dennis called the police, whose investigation confirmed her husband was the mastermind behind the attack.

These were the sentiments of Judge Gayaat Salie-Da Silva of the Western Cape High Court when she handed down two life sentences plus 15 years imprisonment to Reagan Davids for the brutal murder of 75-year-old Hashim Ahmed Dennis, and the attempted murder of his 70-year-old wife, Kulsoem Dennis. Davids faced charges of housebreaking with intent to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder of Kulsoem, attempted murder of Ibtisaam Dennis, and premeditated murder of Hashim Ahmed. The main accused in the matter, Brent Williams, died on February 10 shortly before the conclusion of the murder trial. Williams was the son-in-law of the Muslim couple who were attacked in their Northpine home near Brackenfell, Cape Town. The elderly couple was getting ready for their morning prayer when the vicious attack occurred, and the now-widowed wife, Ibtisaam, barely survived the assault. According to details that emerged during the trial, Williams had arranged the contract hit to 'neutralise' his marital problems he had been experiencing with Ibtisaam. During the attack, Hashim suffered multiple stab wounds, while Kulsoem faked being dead after being hit on the head, neck, and chest with a gun before dropping to the floor, where her burka covered her face. Ibtisaam heard a noise and noticed the bright light from her parents' flatlet. She went to investigate and met a knife-wielding intruder who charged at her. She quickly turned around and closed the sliding door to the main house, saving herself and her two children. Moments after the attack, CCTV footage captured the two attackers running back to Williams, getting in the bakkie, then driving off. Judge Salie-Da Silva in judgment said: 'These offences are marked by exceptional brutality, targeting vulnerable elderly victims in a sanctified setting. EC sports field tender referred to Hawks for investigation
JOHANNESBURG - The Public Protector has referred an Eastern Cape sports field tender to the Hawks. It follows a probe into the R23-million tender for the Lesseyton sports field. Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka found improper conduct on the part of the Enoch Mgijima Municipality. She found that the work done did not justify the cost incurred.
