Pro-Israel hackers drain $90 million from Iran crypto exchange, analytics firm says
Iran's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Nobitex, was hacked for more than $90 million Wednesday, according to blockchain analytics firm Elliptic. The funds were drained from platform wallets into addresses bearing anti-government messages explicitly referencing Iran' s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, pointing to a politically motivated cyberattack, Elliptic said. Pro-Israel hacking group Gonjeshke Darande, or ' Predatory Sparrow, ' claimed responsibility for the attack and said it would release the exchange's source code. Elliptic said the exchange was offline at the time of its post. Predatory Sparrow also claimed credit for a separate cyberattack on Iran's state-owned Bank Sepah this week. Fighting erupted between Israel and Iran on Friday and the countries have continued to trade missile fire. Iran supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threatened the U.S. with 'irreparable damage' Wednesday in response to President Donald Trump's demand that the country surrender. Though the stolen assets have not been conclusively attributed to the group, Elliptic noted that the funds were sent to cryptographic addresses the hackers likely cannot control — suggesting the money was intentionally destroyed as a symbolic act rather than stolen for profit. Elliptic's research linked the exchange to Iran's IRGC, a powerful branch of the military designated as a terrorist organization by the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and Canada. Past investigations have connected the platform to sanctioned IRGC-linked ransomware operatives and individuals close to Khamenei. Blockchain data also shows activity between the Nobitex exchange and wallets associated with Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and the Houthis.

Viasat identified as victim in Chinese Salt Typhoon cyberespionage, Bloomberg News reports
June 17 (Reuters) - Viasat Inc (VSAT.O), opens new tab has been identified as a victim of the Chinese-linked Salt Typhoon cyberespionage operation during last year's presidential campaign, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday. The breach at the satellite communications firm was discovered earlier this year and Viasat has been working with the government in the aftermath, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. Viasat did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on the report. U.S. officials have previously alleged that hackers targeted telecom companies such as Verizon (VZ.N), opens new tab, AT&T (T.N), opens new tab, Lumen (LUMN.N), opens new tab, and others, stealing telephone audio intercepts along with a significant amount of call record data. In December, the officials added a ninth unnamed telecom company to the list of entities compromised by the Salt Typhoon hackers and said that the Chinese operatives gained access to networks with broad and full access, enabling them to "geolocate millions of individuals, to record phone calls at will". Targets of Salt Typhoon reportedly included officials connected to the presidential campaigns of both Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. Chinese officials have previously dismissed the allegations as disinformation, asserting that Beijing "firmly opposes and combats cyber attacks and cyber theft in all forms".

NEW YORK, June 16 (Reuters Breakingviews) - A scary call is coming for CEOs from inside the White House. President Donald Trump's family holding company unveiled a new cellular service and touted a 'Made in USA' smartphone. It will piggyback on AT&T (T.N), opens new tab, Verizon Communications (VZ.N), opens new tab and T-Mobile US (TMUS.O), opens new tab networks for a piece of the $200 billion mobile market. Brazen conflicts of interest abound in a scary new normal for Corporate America. The Trump Organization, which houses a business empire run by the president's sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, rolled out its Trump Mobile offering on Monday. The service, opens new tab features unlimited talk, text and data, telehealth benefits and free international calling to more than 100 countries pitched specifically at military bases. The cost is $47.45 per month, evoking Trump's role as both the 47th and 45th U.S. president. A gold mobile phone due for release in August costs $499, and consumers can plunk down a $100 deposit now. White House officials say there are no personal and professional clashes to worry about because it is Trump's offspring who are in charge. Yet the president reported more than $600 million of income last year from cryptocurrencies and other licensing deals using his name on watches, bibles, sneakers and fragrances, according to Reuters. Royalties from other sources such as rice cookers and dinner plates emblazoned with Trump's face on them are also in the works through deals with Insta Pot and Lenox, Semafor reported. Realistically speaking, Trump Mobile invites a slew of unseemly controversy. For one thing, telecommunications is a highly regulated industry. The Federal Communications Commission oversees wireless spectrum used to build out 5G networks, and Trump's relationship with Chairman Brendan Carr is a cozy one. After Carr told satellite mogul Charlie Ergen that his indebted company EchoStar would have to start selling some of its unused spectrum licenses, the president brokered a follow-up meeting last week, according to Bloomberg. EchoStar shares jumped 45% on the news. The Trump phone service also threatens to put AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, with a combined $650 billion of market value, in awkward positions. They will be in business with the president's children while providing services to the U.S. government. Trump already has seen fit to exert influence over law firms, universities and companies because of diversity initiatives. A branded mobile service goes beyond even those pressure tactics and profiting on wine and snow globes. It sends a very chilling message to big business.
