Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation
(GVMC) commissioner, which has been unoccupied for over four months. In a letter to chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Murthy said that the position has remained vacant since the transfer of the former commissioner, Sampath Kumar.
"Full additional responsibilities have been assigned to the district collector. GVMC is the largest corporation in Andhra Pradesh, and as an executive officer, the Commissioner of GVMC is required to attend to various duties as per the Municipal Corporation Act, including both legal and non-legal responsibilities. You are well aware of the commissioner's duties, such as overseeing daily administration, managing sanitation, public utilities, and major project works. It is highly unfortunate that this post has remained vacant for such a long time without appointing a suitable officer," said Murthy.
"The people of Visakhapatnam are questioning why such a large municipal corporation is being run without a regular commissioner, something that has never happened in the history of Visakhapatnam. They are also expressing concern that despite a change in govt, there has been no change in the state administration. Although elected representatives exist in the local body, the failure of the state govt to appoint a regular commissioner is viewed as a sign of disrespect towards all elected representatives. Furthermore, keeping the commissioner's post vacant for such an extended period is inappropriate, and such actions damage the govt reputation, reflecting poorly on the system. Considering these circumstances, I request that the chief minister personally look into this matter and immediately appoint a new GVMC commissioner to ensure the smooth operation of the corporation," Murthy added in the letter.
