PPB posts higher net profit of RM375.83mil in 1Q25

KUALA LUMPUR: PPB Group Bhd's net profit rose to RM375.83 million in the first quarter ended March 31, 2025 (1Q 2025) from RM337.17 million in 1Q 2024, while its revenue also increased to RM1.35 billion in 1Q 2025 from RM1.29 billion previously.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, the group attributed its performance to higher contributions from Wilmar International Ltd, which increased to RM283 million in 1Q 2025 from RM266 million previously.
PPB owns an 18.8 per cent equity interest in Wilmar, one of Asia's largest integrated agribusiness groups.
"At the same time, core business segments recorded a 25 per cent increase in profit to RM127 million in 1Q 2025 (1Q 2024: RM102 million)," it said.
On prospects, it said the grain and agribusiness segment will continue to closely monitor global grain prices and adopt prudent sourcing strategies, given the commodity market's vulnerability to adverse weather conditions in key grain-producing regions and evolving government policies.
"These challenges are further compounded by heightened global uncertainties and economic pressures arising from the escalation of United States tariff measures.
"Nonetheless, the group remains committed to upholding high product quality by leveraging its technical expertise and delivering reliable customer service. We are confident in our ability to remain resilient and deliver a satisfactory performance in 2025," it added.
Meanwhile, PPB said the consumer products segment will continue to expand its product range and strengthen its market presence to enhance distribution efficiency amid rising operating costs.
"Supported by resilient domestic household spending, a well-established distribution network and robust logistics infrastructure, the segment is well-positioned to respond effectively to evolving market demand and is expected to deliver a satisfactory performance in 2025," it said.

PPB risk premium higher amid legal case in Indonesia

PETALING JAYA: Investors will likely demand a higher risk premium for PPB Group Bhd after its associate company, Wilmar International Ltd, revealed that its subsidiaries were charged by the Attorney General's Office (AGO) of Indonesia. Wilmar, which denied any wrongdoing over the alleged corruption conspiracy, had placed a security deposit of US$729mil with the AGO pending a Supreme Court decision. Kenanga Research, in a report, said: 'We believe this development is likely to raise the risk premium for PPB group, and could pose an overhang so long as it is not resolved, given that Indonesia accounts for about 10% of its business.' Wilmar is PPB's main asset and profit contributor, the research house noted. While the research house is maintaining PPB's financial year 2025 (FY25) and FY26 earnings, it said: 'We are downgrading our target price for PPB to RM10.50 from RM15.' Kenanga Research has also cut the stock to a 'market perform' call from an 'outperform' previously, as the matter would be submitted to the Supreme Court. The risks to its recommendation include weather impact on commodity supply and prices, regulatory changes affecting prices of essential goods and production cost inflation. In June 2023, Indonesia's AGO named three palm oil companies involved in corruption for conspiring with top Indonesian trade office to skirt palm oil export restrictions in 2022. Wilmar was one of the three companies and, at the time, it indicated that no official charges had been made against any companies in the group and it was seeking more details over the press reports. In March, all three parties were acquitted by the Central Jakarta Court but a month later, four judges and two lawyers were arrested by the Indonesian AGO. An employee of Wilmar was also reported to have been arrested.

Rising fears over US attack on Iran drive equities lower

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian equities tumbled in Thursday's early session, in line with the performance of regional markets as fears mounted that the US would enter the Israel-Iran conflict. At the midday break, the FBM KLCI was down 8.77 points to 1,503.18, taking the index to its lowest point in June as investors sold down heavyweights across industry sectors. The flight from equities in light of the prospect of an escalation of military action in the Middle East saw broad-based retreat in domestic equities. Declining issues outweighed advancing at a ratio of nearly 3-to-1 while market turnover stood at 1.81 billion shares for a low value of RM765.06mil. Leading the sell-off in the blue-chip index, PPB dropped 39 sen to RM9.99, PETRONAS Dagangan dropped 26 sen to RM21.10 and Kuala Lumpur Kepong shed 26 sen to RM19.76. Meanwhile, reports that US President Donald Trump had privately approved plans to attack Iran further rattled Asian markets. Japan's Nikkei slipped 0.85% to 38,554. In China, the blue-chip CSI300 dropped 0.78% to 3,844 while the composite index shed 0.86% to 3,359. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 2.02% to 23,231.

Wilmar posts US$729m security deposit amid Indonesian corruption appeal, PPB discloses

PPB Group Bhd has announced that its associate company, Wilmar International Ltd, has placed a security deposit of 11.88 trillion Indonesian rupiah (approximately US$729 million or RM3.44 billion) with the Indonesian Attorney General's Office (AGO), in connection with an ongoing court appeal involving five of its subsidiaries. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, PPB, which holds an 18.8% interest in Wilmar, said the announcement was made by Wilmar on the Singapore Exchange following a press conference by the Attorney General of Indonesia on the same day. The case stems from charges brought by the AGO in April 2024 against five Wilmar subsidiaries, namely PT Multimas Nabati Asahan, PT Multi Nabati Sulawesi, PT Sinar Alam Permai, PT Wilmar Bioenergi Indonesia, and PT Wilmar Nabati Indonesia, for allegedly causing financial losses to the state, making unauthorised profits, and harming the business sector during a domestic cooking oil shortage between July and December 2021. The AGO claimed that the alleged actions led to total state losses of IDR12.3 trillion (about US$755 million), and subsequently appealed a Central Jakarta Court decision that favoured the Wilmar entities. In its statement, Wilmar said the AGO requested the group to 'demonstrate their belief in the Indonesian judicial system and their good faith and innocence, by placing a security deposit' equivalent to part of the alleged losses and supposed illegal gains. The Wilmar subsidiaries have complied with this request. Wilmar stated that the 'Security Deposit will be returned… if the Indonesian Supreme Court upholds the decision of the Central Jakarta Court, but may be forfeited, in full or in part… if the Indonesian Supreme Court finds against the Wilmar Respondents.' The group reiterated: 'The Wilmar Respondents continue to maintain that all actions taken by them were taken in good faith and free from any corrupt intent.' — TMR
