A ‘Seinfeld'-Approved Bagel Institution Out of NYC Lands in D.C.
New York bagels are coming to the nation's capital. And these aren't just New York- style bagels; rather, H&H Bagels — which opened its first location in Manhattan in 1972 — brings its 50-year-old recipe to Mount Vernon Triangle (601 K Street NW).
H&H is now open for ordering as of today. It's celebrating its D.C. debut on Thursday, June 12 with mystery value gift cards valued between $5 and $100 for the first 200 customers.
sH&H purists will be happy to hear the bagel and schmear menu will be identical to the original. To maintain its iconic texture, chew, and taste, H&H sends its dough made from kettle-boiled NYC water down to its newest location. 'Bagels are baked fresh on-site [and] now around the country, so that no matter where you are, you're getting the real NYC experience,' says director of marketing Jesse Stein. Since its Upper West Side debut decades ago, H&H has expanded across the city with stores in the Upper East Side, multiple airport outposts, and Penn Station.
While H&H is sticking to its recipe roots, it's branching out in terms of certain flavors and combinations. Take a new spicy scallion cream cheese, which is infused with a blend of dried chili peppers, and then mixed with fresh scallions for a slow-building heat. Stein also teases some 'fun collaborations coming up toward the end of the summer' that will be available both in D.C. as well as locations nationwide.
Classics, however, will always be a staple at H&H. The Bacon, Egg, and Cheese remains the most popular sandwich on the menu 'by a mile,' says Stein. Its everything bagel, by the way, is its best-seller by far.
The D.C. debut marks the brand's third expansion out of its Big Apple home base, thanks to the nationwide franchise rollout announced in 2024. Boca Raton and Santa Monica are already open, and future shops are destined for Tampa, Jacksonville, and West Palm Beach, Florida; Knoxville, Tennessee; Chicago; and LA.
But D.C. is special, says Stein: 'There was great interest in bringing H&H to the community, and we're excited to be in such a great location accessible to so many Washingtonians.'
While New York City may be known for its bagels, D.C. certainly holds its own when it comes to baked rings of goodness. The nation's capital has no shortage of excellent local shops, including decades-old Bethesda Bagels, Shaw newcomer Pearl's Bagels, and Buffalo & Bergen — the growing D.C. enterprise from Long Island-born restaurateur Gina Chersevani that ships dough daily from Queens.
But this growing bagel culture, says Stein, has only added fuel to H&H's fire. 'We know that the bagel scene has been having its moment in D.C., and we're very excited to join that community,' says Stein. 'It's great to be coming into a region where there's already passion around bagels.'
Founded in 1972 by Helmer Toro and Hector Hernandez, the original H&H Bagel was as classic as it gets. The New York Times said it was the neighborhood's 'most celebrated destination for what is quite possibly the Upper West Side's most iconic food.' The cult-favorite amongst locals and tourists alike was popularized over the years by appearances in Sex & the City and Seinfeld .
H&H famously played a starring role on Seinfeld . Returning to work after a 12-year strike, Kramer ends up sabotaging the bagel machine and goes back on strike during 'Festivus' — and reminding us all that the hourly minimum wage in NY was just $5.15 in the late 1990s. From a price perspective, its cream cheese bagel with mix-ins like scallion, veggie, strawberry, and more is now $5.75.

Forget Tesla robotaxis, this grocery chain tries wild delivery method
Lately, it seems that humans are willingly allowing technology to take over, as evidenced by the upcoming release of self-driving taxis. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter For years, Tesla has been trying to develop robotaxis. The Tesla robotaxi or Cybercab is an autonomous electric vehicle that uses self-driving technology to transport passengers. This innovative method of transportation is intended to roll out by the end of June in Austin, Texas. Related: Walmart makes deal to open popular food chain in stores Meanwhile, grocery stores have introduced various new ways to make getting groceries easier and more convenient for busy consumers. Thanks to these developments, consumers now have more options than ever, including curbside pickup, delivery, or the old-school way of driving to the nearest grocery store and picking the items up yourself. However, this Southern supermarket is unexpectedly changing the game by testing an innovative new way for customers to access needed items. And not even Tesla owner Elon Musk saw it coming. Image Source:H-E-B, a Texas-based grocery store chain with over 435 locations across Texas and Mexico, is known for its high-quality products sold at low prices. Unlike rival grocery store giants like Walmart (WMT) and Kroger (KR) , H-E-B has not expanded to other states in the U.S., despite its inception 120 years ago and being Texans' favorite place to shop for groceries. This is why the supermarket's latest move came as a surprise to many. Related: Forget drones, Amazon has new robots that could replace humans H-E-B revealed it has begun testing an autonomous vehicle delivery service at one of its locations in none other than Austin, Texas, in partnership with Avride, an autonomous vehicle development company. Since May, the grocery store chain has delivered groceries to customers within a one-mile radius who order through the H-E-B-owned delivery app Favor. The self-driving robots can carry up to 10 small items and are the size of a medium-sized box. They drive as fast as up to five miles per hour and can travel around 31 miles when fully charged. The robots use sensors and cameras to avoid bumping into obstacles and identify traffic signals. They can also move in nearly all weather conditions. H&M sales expected to edge higher as turnaround continues
H&M ( investors will be hoping the high street fashion chain shows it is on the road to recovery next week despite caution among many shoppers. The retailer is expected to report a slight rise in sales for the latest quarter in an update on Thursday June 26 as it continues with its turnaround strategy. It comes after the Swedish firm reported weaker-than-expected sales for the first quarter of its financial year in its previous update in March. H&M saw net sales grow 2% to 55.3 billion Swedish krona (£4.24 billion) for the three months to February 28. However, it flagged that this slowed down to 1% in March amid continued pressure on consumer finances. Sales growth was also knocked by H&M's plans to trim its store estate and help simplify its operations over the past year. H&M said it had 40 net store closures over the quarter and has continued to shut sites in recent months. The overhaul of its store estate is part of a major turnaround plan under Daniel Erver, who became chief executive last year. The group, which also owns & Other Stories and Cos, is seeking to accelerate recent sluggish growth. Deutsche Bank's Adam Cochrane stressed however that trading in the latest quarter is 'unlikely to be the turning point'. He added: 'H&M is progressing through its turnaround but there will be relatively limited evidence of this in Q2, given the unhelpful weather conditions around Europe and the impact of negative currency exchange translation. 'Our updated earnings forecast of 5.6 billion Swedish krona is showing a 21% decline year-on-year, better than 42% in Q1 but still hard to provide evidence of a sustainable turnaround.' Mr Cochrane added that a build up in stock inventory at the end of the first quarter is unlikely to have completely unwound in recent months and could pose 'a further problem' going into the second half of the year. Deutsche Bank predicted H&M would see sales growth slow to 1.5% for the latest quarter but indicated this would be a roughly 5% drop once currency rates are taken into account. Jefferies equity analyst James Grzinic is more pessimistic, pointing to growth of 0.5% for the quarter. He said the brokerage is taking a 'more cautious view' to H&M's recent trading, after signs that the rival Chinese platforms are 'losing momentum' in the US. Meanwhile, fellow rival Inditex ( which owns Zara and Pull & Bear, saw growth slow down to 6% in recent weeks.
