Pact signed to turn oilfield waste into clean energy

Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has signed a pioneering research agreement with ARA Petroleum to explore innovative ways of converting produced brine—a waste byproduct from oil and gas operations—into sustainable energy resources such as biohydrogen and biochar.
The agreement was signed at the University's Cultural Centre by Professor Amer bin Saif al Hinai, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Postgraduate Studies and Research at SQU, and Dr Omar bin Salim al Jaaidi, Vice President of ARA Petroleum. The project will be fully funded by ARA Petroleum and supported with its technical expertise, bringing together academic research and industrial know-how to support Oman's sustainability goals.
In an interview with the Observer, Dr Saleh al Saadi, Director of the Sustainable Energy Research Centre at SQU, said the collaboration reflects the University's core mission to advance technologies that address real-world challenges.
'This partnership aligns directly with SQU's vision of advancing sustainable technologies by addressing real industrial challenges through research,' Dr Al Saadi said. 'By converting produced water into biohydrogen and biochar, the project supports Oman's Vision 2040 and Net-Zero 2050 goals. It contributes to renewable energy development, water reuse, and environmental protection, while building local research capacity.'
Produced brine, typically high in salinity and contaminants, is one of the oil sector's most complex waste streams. Dr Al Saadi's research team aims to overcome technical barriers such as low hydrogen yields and inefficiencies in the conversion process.
'We are tackling major challenges like the high salinity and toxicity of produced water,' he explained. 'Our team is developing an optimised two-stage fermentation system to increase hydrogen output, using biochar to enhance gas quality. In addition, we plan to incorporate AI modelling to improve process efficiency and ensure the project's economic viability. The aim is to transform waste into clean energy and agricultural inputs.'
The collaboration is also notable for integrating public, private, and academic stakeholders. It has received strong backing from the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, with its Ejaad platform playing a vital role in linking academia with industry.
'This collaboration unites academia (SQU), industry (ARA), and government (Ejaad) to address national priorities,' said Dr Al Saadi.
'It shows how joint innovation can drive Oman's transition to a knowledge-based and sustainable economy. It not only enables the development of real-world solutions, but also builds national expertise and accelerates the commercialisation of green technologies.'
Dr Omar bin Salim al Jaaidi remarked, 'This collaboration underscores the strength of local expertise and the potential of Oman's young generation. By working with Sultan Qaboos University, we are not only developing sustainable energy solutions, but also empowering the next generation of innovators and researchers to lead efforts to address global environmental challenges.' As the world moves towards more circular and sustainable energy practices, this initiative places Oman at the forefront of research-driven solutions for resource recovery and decarbonisation in the hydrocarbon sector.

Asma bint Salem al Hajri, Tourism Promotion Expert at the ministry, said the participation reflects ongoing work to enhance the reputation of Omani cuisine regionally and internationally. She noted that traditional Omani food plays a key role in cultural tourism and showcases the depth of Omani civilisation. The ministry's activities at the event included a visual presentation and a tasting session, giving attendees insight into Omani dishes, their ingredients and preparation. The event was a platform to introduce the diversity and authenticity of Omani food to new audiences and make it a part of the sultanate's tourism offering. Fatima bint Ali al Lawati, Assistant Director for Institutional Planning and member of the Food Tourism and Culinary Arts Programme at the ministry, said the double win demonstrates international appreciation for Oman's culinary arts and intangible heritage. She added that the recognition will encourage further efforts to promote Omani food culture through careful documentation and creative marketing.

Oman's higher education institutions make mark in world rankings
MUSCAT: The 2026 QS World University Rankings have recognised five Omani higher education institutions, including Sultan Qaboos University, University of Nizwa, Dhofar University, Sohar University, and the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech). Sultan Qaboos University achieved significant progress, climbing 28 spots to secure the 334th position globally. The University of Nizwa ranked within the 770–761 bracket, while Dhofar University was placed in the 900–851 range. Sohar University entered the rankings within the 1000–951 category, and GUtech was positioned between 1200–1001. This performance reflects the steady advancement of Oman's academic and research infrastructure, as reported by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the UK-based global higher education analyst, on its official 2026 rankings website. She explained that the QS methodology evaluates universities based on key indicators, including academic reputation (assessed through expert surveys on teaching and research quality), employer reputation (measuring graduate employability), and faculty-to-student ratios (reflecting educational quality). Research impact is gauged through citation metrics, while international faculty and student ratios demonstrate institutional diversity and global appeal. SQU advances 28 places, ranks 334 in QS World University Ranking
Muscat: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has continued its progress in the QS World University Rankings 2026 for the second consecutive year, advancing by twenty-eight places to reach the 334th position globally. This marks a new achievement for the university in this ranking and reflects SQU's continuous efforts to continually improve its performance and progress. The number of universities included in this year's QS ranking reached 1,503, out of a total of 8,467 universities worldwide, with the addition of 112 new universities this year. The indicators for academic reputation, employment outcomes, research citations, and international research network have shown clear progress this year. This reflects SQU's strong commitment to graduating highly competent students and its continuous efforts to advance the research sector and support its researchers—making them exemplary figures cited across various research fields. HH Sayyid Dr. Fahad bin Al Julanda Al Said, SQU Vice Chancellor, stated that 'this achievement is a reflection of reality and the result of dedicated efforts and continuous commitment to making Sultan Qaboos University among the best globally in various fields.
