GNFL round six wrap: Royals stand tall at home while Railways snatch a win in Kalbarri
Two stellar games — Chapman Valley battling it out against Brigades and Railways' close scare against Northampton — headlined round six of the GNFL on Saturday.
The Royals hosted the Hawks with the home side keen to bounce back after losing at home to Railways.
Brigades came off a 150-point win over Rovers and looked to carry their confidence into the battle in the Valley.
However, the Royals stood tall, defeating the visiting Hawks by 18 points, despite a third-quarter scare.
Chapman Valley welcomed the three Simpson brothers back for the first time in season 2025 with Kane and Beau returning to play alongside their brother Kobe. The trio put on a show and were among the Royals' best.
Tom Walker from Chapman Valley was judged best-on-ground for the Royals, alongside the Simpson brothers and Mick Horstman. Kane Simpson returned to the side after a knee injury with three goals with fellow forward Tyrone Papertalk Jr kicking two, while Kim Schofield also collected two for this efforts out of the middle.
Lucas Ronan was one of Brigades' best, finding himself on Jayden Schofield for parts of the game as the young forward booted two goals.
Chapman Valley jumped out to a quick start through forward Tom Warr before Brigades replied in the first quarter. However, the Royals managed to add two more to their total going into the first break.
A three-goal term for both sides in the second quarter saw momentum swing from end to end, with the Royals going into the second half up by two goals.
A fightback in the third quarter by Brigades had the visiting supporters up and about as the Hawks looked to mount a comeback.
Ronan came though with an important goal in the third as the Hawks gained momentum.
A three-goal to two third quarter had Brigades in the box seat as the visitors looked to storm home in the final term, only down by seven points.
Chapman Valley, however, bounced back and held off a charging Brigades outfit to claim victory by 18 points, 10.7 (67) to 7.7 (49).
Railways snatched victory late in the last quarter as Northampton put up the toughest challenge the Blues had faced this season, with only four points separating the teams at the final siren in Kalbarri.
Callum Teakle impressed in the ruck for Northampton, earning himself best-on-ground honours along with teammates Tyler Caddy, Kingsley Smith, Blake Luxton and Jaden Poletti.
For the Blues, half-back Drew Tunbridge claimed best-on-ground honours while Matt Kimberley, in his 150th game, shone brightly once again.
Chris Scott and Seth Farmer booted two goals apiece for the Blues in the low-scoring affair.
It was a tight first half as both sides went goal for goal, with the Rams edging ahead by a goal going into the main break. Railways clawed their way back into the contest in the third term, setting the stage for a last-quarter showdown.
Northampton jumped out of the blocks with a goal before Railways replied with one of their own. The Rams managed two more majors in the final term before Railways locked it in their forward 50 with Rams' defenders scrambling.
A goal late through Blues' Damien King put Railways in front, securing a four-point win for the Blues, who remain undefeated this season. The final score was Northampton 7.7 (49) to Railways 7.11 (53).
The final game of the round saw Rovers host Towns, with the traveling Bulldogs managing to bounce back after last week's thumping at the hands of Railways to secure a 70-point win over the Demons.
Clay Azevedo, Matt Russell, Thomas Collins, Blake Tazewell and Farren Parfitt were judged best-on-ground at Greenough Oval for Rovers with Kevin Seelander and Farren Parfit booting two goals each.
For Towns it was Zane Marwick who was judged best-on-ground with Drew Forrester, Jaylen Parsons, Bobby Gibson and Caleb Sewell all impressing in the Bulldogs' win away from home.
The final score was Rovers 6.5 (41) to Towns 17.9 (111).

'He was a forward, we put him as a back and I remember the conversation it was 'just see if you can read the play' … it was (against) Swan Districts, I remember it like it was yesterday, he took 10 marks, his man kicked five goals because he was that aggressive. 'He dictated what we were going to do because we ended up losing three or four key position players at the start of 2015 … him and young Tom Barrass started his career around the same time, and they started to develop a gap control way of defending all the time. 'We defended space, and he would dare you to kick it near him. He took that to another level, the evolution of what we did as a team started with McGovern at Swan Districts.' Simpson also revealed that such was McGovern's star power that he was getting massive offers when he was out of contract in 2018. 'During that season he was out of contract and he got massive offers and I'm talking the offers that (Tom) De Koning is getting now, that was in 2018,' Simpson said. 'He had every right just to hold off a bit but I think he knew what was coming with the success we were building, so he locked himself away, sacrificed a little bit.' Simpson praised McGovern's incredible ability to play through adversity, often taking to the field injured including in the 2018 premiership victory. 'From a coaching point of view, it was an absolute pleasure to coach him,' Simpson said. 'He had to step away because he refuses to yield, he'll never take a knee. 'And that's the piece that we spoke about yesterday, you have to stop him from playing.' Simpson said McGovern's impact off the field was just as significant as it was on it as he stepped away from the game. 'I can't speak highly enough of the bloke. His biggest asset really is what he's done off-field. He is the number one advocate for how to set you up field,' he said. 'In 30 years in the AFL I've never seen anyone develop a next phase of your life and it's not money, it's the family and then it's the networking and the connection he had with the people who he was connected to before he got drafted. 'He's built that plumbing business up now where he's acquired other businesses around that … he steps away knowing the next part of his life is maybe not as exciting but it's just as prosperous.'

Seven GNWFL girls selected for the 2025 WA Women's State Country Squad clash
Seven talented Great Northern Women's Football League players have been selected in the 2025 WA Women's State Country Squad with all coming from GNWFL league leaders Towns and Chapman Valley. The seven locals selected will take on the Perth Football League at Gosnells Oval on Friday in what is a great opportunity for the GNWFL girls to flex their muscles on the big stage. Towns star Jessica Giudice-Nairn will lead the WA Country State squad. Giudice-Nairn will be playing alongside Towns teammate Olivia Bidwell with their coach Jason Drage indicating their importance on and off the ground. 'Jess just demonstrates pure leadership on the ground and off the ground,' Drage said. 'Her ability to lift teammates up and get everyone up and about is really pleasing to have in your side as a coach. 'Olivia on the other hand is a very skilful player. She may not be the loudest on the ground but she certainly leads by example. 'I am incredibly proud of the two and they thoroughly deserve the opportunity.' The remaining five players selected in the WA State Country Squad are from Chapman Valley. Ellie Blackmore, Taylah Broadhurst, Tegan Brooks, Eva Campo and Andie Payne will don the yellow and black after impressing selectors this season in the GNWFL. Chapman Valley coach Matt Reid said it was a great opportunity for the girls after a strong first half to the season. 'As a club point of view it's awesome, a great recognition for the girls themselves, and personally for each one of them it is reward for effort,' he said. 'They all work really hard on and off the track and now have been given a great opportunity thanks to their hard work. 'Taylah and Andie are great leaders and are really valuable for me as coach to be able to lean on. 'Tegan, Ellie and Eva are all new to the side this season and have been welcome inclusions. 'They demand respect on and off the ground and come game day provide us with a real edge. 'Myself and the club as a whole are really proud of the girls and wish them all the best.' The game kicks off at 7.15pm on Friday, June 20. Entry costs a gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to A Stitch In Time. The game will be streamed live on Streamer.
