US imposes sanctions on Palestinian charities for allegedly funding Hamas

Hindustan Times10-06-2025

The US Treasury Department on Tuesday imposed sanctions on five people and five entities across the Middle East, Africa and Europe, accusing them of being prominent financial supporters of Hamas' military wing under the pretense of conducting humanitarian work in the Gaza Strip and around the world.
Those sanctioned include the Gaza-based charity Al Weam Charitable Society, which is accused of being controlled by Hamas, along with its executive director Muhammad Sami Muhammad Abu Marei.
Turkey-based charity Filistin Vakfi and its President Zeki Abdullah Ibrahim Ararawi were also targeted for sanctions. Charities in Algeria, the Netherlands and Italy were also targeted for sanctions.
The department is also targeting a separate charity linked to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, or PFLP.
A 2024 Treasury report on terrorist financing highlights how online crowdfunding is increasingly done under the guise of soliciting legitimate charitable donations, making it difficult to identify as terrorist financing.
Because the majority of crowdfunding activity is legitimate, 'this status can make it more difficult for law enforcement attempting to investigate potential (terrorist financing) cases with a crowdfunding and online fundraising nexus," the report said.

Mithi River desilting fraud: Court refuses pre-arrest bail to BMC officer Prashant Tayshete

MUMBAI: A special court on Saturday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Prashant Tayshete, one of the three Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officers booked in connection with the alleged irregularities in executing contracts for desilting the Mithi River. The case involves alleged irregularities in executing contracts for desilting the Mithi River. (Raju Shinde/Hindustan Times) Special judge NG Shukla granted Tayshete, who works in the BMC's stormwater drains department, interim protection from arrest for two weeks to allow him to approach the high court for relief. It isn't clear why his anticipatory bail plea was rejected, as the detailed court order is not yet available. Tayshete was one of the 13 people and entities named in the FIR registered by the Mumbai police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) for allegedly causing a loss of ₹ 65.54 crore to the BMC while executing contracts to desilt the Mithi River between 2013 and 2023. According to the EOW, Tayshete and two other accused BMC officers allegedly tailored the tender for the desilting contracts to benefit Kochi-based Matprop Technical Services Pvt Ltd, resulting in the company's monopoly over the contracts. When the BMC's contractors approached Matprop for desilting equipment, they were directed to approach alleged intermediaries Jay Joshi and Ketan Kadam, according to the EOW. The duo, in connivance with senior Matprop executives, allegedly rented the machines at inflated rates. The accused also allegedly fudged records to increase the amount of silt to be removed from the Mithi River to benefit certain contractors and the rates they were supposed to be paid. Tayshete had moved the court seeking protection from arrest on May 19. His counsel, advocate Vaibhav Punekar, submitted that Tayshete looked after stormwater drainage and was only involved in desilting a minor portion of the river, along with transporting the sludge removed for disposal. Punekar also told the court that Tayshete had no knowledge about the alleged fraud related to renting desilting machines. During his visit to Kerala, he was only tasked with machine demonstration work and submitted a report regarding that, Tayshete claimed in his plea. He was not connected with any forged memorandums of understanding and has not received any money related to the concerned work, the plea said. Requesting pre-arrest bail, Tayshete's lawyer argued that his client was a retired BMC officer who cannot influence any witnesses and tamper with any documents. He added that no case of cheating, forgery or conspiracy can be made out against him. Earlier this month, the court had granted bail to Joshi, saying there is no evidence to show that he was an alleged intermediary involved in compelling contractors to hire machines at inflated rates.

Amid Pune Rains, Couple's Bike Skids Due To Pothole. Two Men Rush To Help But...

Last Updated: The couple immediately rushed to the Kondhwa police station and registered a complaint against the two men. Two unidentified men, under the pretext of offering help, allegedly stole gold jewellery worth Rs 75,000 from a couple who had just met with an accident on their way home in Pune. The incident took place on Thursday at around 10 pm near Shriram Chowk in Tilekarnagar, Kondhwa. According to TOI, 32-year-old Sachin Sanjay Mahajan and his wife were en route home from Yewalewadi when their motorcycle slid down the road after hitting a pothole and they both fell off the motorcycle. The Kondhwa-based shop owner stated that he fainted for a while, and his wife sustained minor injuries on her hands. Soon after, two men, who posed as Good Samaritans, offered them help and also lifted their motorcycle and parked it properly. The couple thanked the two men for a sweet gesture as they were leaving the place. While talking to his wife shortly after the accident, the man realised that his gold chain worth Rs 75,000 was missing. The couple looked for it in the area but couldn't find it and that's when their suspicion fell on the two men who had helped them. As they decided to go after them, they found out that the duo might have stolen the keys to their motorcycle as well. There have been monthly protests in the British capital since the start of the 20-month-long war between Israel and Hamas, which has ravaged Gaza. This Saturday, protesters there carried signs including 'Stop arming Israel' and 'No war on Iran' as they marched in the sweltering heat. 'It's important to remember that people are suffering in Gaza. I fear all the focus will be on Iran now,' said 34-year-old Harry Baker. 'I don't have great love for the Iranian regime, but we are now in a dangerous situation.' This was his third pro-Palestinian protest, he added. Regional fears Saturday's marches comes amid heightened global tensions as the United States mulls joining Israel's strikes against Iran. Tehran said Saturday that more than 400 people had been killed in Iran since Israel launched strikes last week claiming its arch-foe was close to acquiring a nuclear weapon, which Iran denies. Some 25 people have been killed in Israel, according to official figures. One marcher in London, a 31-year-old Iranian student who did not want to share her name, told AFP she had family in Iran and was 'scared'. 'I'm worried about my country. I know the regime is not good but it's still my country. I'm scared,' she said. Gaza's civil defence agency has reported that hundreds have been killed by Israeli forces while trying to reach the US- and Israeli-backed aid distribution sites. 'People need to keep their eyes on Gaza. That's where the genocide is happening,' said 60-year-old protester Nicky Marcus. 'Scared' In Berlin, demonstrators gathered mid-afternoon close to the parliament, some chanting 'Germany finances, Israel bombs'. 'You can't sit on the sofa and be silent. Now is the time when we all need to speak up,' said protester Gundula, who did not want to give her second name. For Marwan Radwan, the point of the protest was to bring attention to the 'genocide currently taking place' and the 'dirty work' being done by the German government. In Bern, demonstrators carried banners calling on the federal government to intervene in the war in Gaza, expressing solidarity with Palestinians. The rally there was called by organisations including Amnesty International, the Social Democratic Party, the Greens and the Swiss Trade Union Federation. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Slogans included 'Stop the occupation', 'Stop the starvation, stop the violence', and 'Right to self-determination'. Some marchers chanted: 'We are all the children of Gaza'. The overall death toll in Gaza since the war broke out has reached at least 55,637 people, according to the health ministry. Israel has denied it is carrying out a genocide and says it aims to wipe out Hamas after the Islamist group's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people.
