World's tallest monk? Victor Wembanyama spotted at China's Shaolin Temple with shaved head

CNN10-06-2025

French 7'3' NBA star Victor Wembanyama may have just unlocked a new position: Shaolin monk.
Wembanyama, who ended last season early due to a rare blood clot in his right shoulder appeared to be looking for some off-season spiritual peace and strength at a Shaolin Temple in central China.
A widely circulated image showed the San Antonio Spurs center with a freshly shaven head, sitting pensively in front of small Budda statues inside a room typically used by abbots to receive guests.
Chinese state media reports confirmed on Monday that he was indeed at the temple.
The image, which CNN is unable to trace to its original source, was reposted by multiple Chinese state media outlets and by the NBA's official account on Chinese social media.
NBA said on its official Weibo page on Monday that 'according to reports' Wembanyama has shaved his head and begun a 10-day retreat in the Shaolin Temple.
In a separate video on Douyin, China's version of TikTok, a bystander spotted the towering basketball player at the temple.
The 1,500-year-old monastery, nestled deep in the forested mountains of central China's Henan province, is known for Zen Buddhism and the Chinese martial art of kung fu.
Retreats at the temple focus on discipline, meditation and inner harmony and aim to help disconnect from real-world distractions.
The 21-year-old Wembanyama – a 2024-25 NBA All-star and 2023-24 Rookie of the Year, just went through a tough season.
He had been out since February following a rare deep vein thrombosis diagnosis and several weeks later the Spurs were officially eliminated from playoffs.
Wembanyama seemingly wanted to stay low-key on his journey at the monastery.
The Frenchman has not yet posted anything about it on social media. On Monday, the Shaolin Temple, told CNN 'We are not aware of this' when asked about Wembanyama staying there.
But a state-owned outlet of Henan province, where the temple is located, reportedly learned from people at the temple that 'Wembanyama is indeed currently in the Shaolin Temple, but the relevant matters are not convenient to be disclosed to the public'.
Right before the spiritual tour, the French basketballer spent a couple of fun days in Beijing. Locals spotted him shopping, playing basketball, walking in a park, and even visiting the Greal Wall, as shown in their social media footage.
The San Antonio Spurs on Friday shared a video on Instagram of Wembanyama as he visited the Great Wall of China in Beijing.
'It's Victor Wembanyama. Life in China on the Great Wall itself, having an amazing time. It's crazy,' he said.
The Shaolin temple often attracts well known figures. Prominent US YouTuber IShowSpeed visited to the same temple back in March, training with a kung fu master and generating millions of views on his social media accounts.

Referees picked by the NBA for Game 7 are James Capers, Josh Tiven, Sean Wright

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — James Capers, Josh Tiven and Sean Wright joined a very small club on Sunday. Capers, Tiven and Wright were announced by the NBA as the officiating crew for Game 7 of the NBA Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers. It's the first Game 7 of a finals for all three, who are now the 22nd, 23rd and 24th referees in NBA history to land such an assignment. 'Being selected to work the NBA Finals is the top honor as an NBA official,' Byron Spruell, the NBA's president of league operations, said earlier this month when the 12-person list of finals referees was revealed. And Game 7, one would think, is the top of the top honors. Scott Foster, a two-time Game 7 finals referee and generally considered one of the best in the game, was not picked for the crew. Had he been, he would have become the seventh referee picked to work at least three Game 7s in the title series. The referees in NBA history who have worked that many are Mendy Rudolph (six), Earl Strom (five), Sid Borgia (four), Dan Crawford (three), Joe Crawford (three) and Richie Powers (three). Foster — who is frequently criticized online by fans — was defended by Indiana coach Rick Carlisle after Game 4, notable because it was a game that the Pacers lost. 'As far as officiating, I think it's awful some of the things I've seen about the officiating, and Scott Foster in particular,' Carlisle said before Game 5. 'I've known Scott Foster for 30 years. He is a great official. He has done a great job in these playoffs. We've had him a lot of times. The ridiculous scrutiny that is being thrown out there is terrible and unfair and unjust and stupid.' The NBA had 75 full-time officials this season and 36 of those were selected to work the first round of the playoffs. The officiating roster is further trimmed going into each playoff round, with the league's referee operations management team determining who should advance. Capers is working his 13th finals, Tiven his sixth and Wright is in the finals for only the second time. It's the second game of these finals for all three referees — Capers worked Indiana's win in Game 3, while Wright and Tiven were both on the crew for Oklahoma City's win in Game 4. James Williams, who worked Games 2 and 5 of the series, was picked as the alternate for Game 7. David Guthrie, who officiated Games 1 and 6, was the referee assigned to the replay center in Secaucus, New Jersey, for Game 7. Thunder coach Mark Daigneault addressed officiating — and how he and his team respect referees — from a general perspective Saturday, when asked how his team has avoided being called for very many technical fouls this season. 'The outcome of the game and the context of the game is outside of our control,' Daigneault said. 'In between the lines is inside our control. The referees (are) in that category, too. We can't control how they call the game and what they put a whistle on and what they don't. We can control a lot of other things in the game, and that's what we need to focus on.' ___ AP NBA:

Victor Wembanyama opens up about 'great experience' at Shaolin Temple in China

The images were all over social media: 7'3" Victor Wembanyama with a shaved head, wearing robes and running with monks at a Shaolin Temple in Dengfeng, China. Perhaps the 'tallest monk' in history, both ancient and modern. During a private visit to China, San Antonio Spurs basketball player Victor Wembanyama had his head shaved at the Shaolin Temple in Henan Province, donned monastic robes, and shared a vegetarian meal, preparing for… Spurs Fam,Wemby is out for his morning run! @spurs #WembyDaily #update Wembanyama opened up about the experience at the Fanatics Fest in New York on Sunday. Quotes via Larry Holder at The Athletic. 'It was a great experience,' Wembanyama said. 'My goal going there was putting my body through things that it's not used to doing and allowing my range of movement and strength. This was probably as very different as possible from what I'm used to doing.' So what did that look like? 'Kung fu. Everyday. It was like a vegan temple, monastery. … I was isolated,' Wembanyama said, He added that he had to sneak out and get some meat dishes to help him maintain the 245 pounds he has now reached. This was a casual affair, where Wembanyama played chess against 100 people lined up (he won) and had a conversation in 'The Shop' with Tom Brady, LeBron James, and others, during which he discussed his experience in China. He did not discuss the blood clot in his shoulder issue, which prematurely ended last season for him, although he is expected to be recovered and ready for the start of training camp. The Spurs will have a full season with him, De'Aaron Fox at the point, rookie Dylan Harper (who they are expected to draft with the No. 2 pick next week) and a roster that can make some noise in the Western Conference.
