Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa among CBS' 'volatile' NFL quarterbacking tier
Like many Miami fans, CBS needs to see it to believe it.
In CBS' NFL quarterbacking tiers heading into the 2025 season, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa finds himself ranked among the bottom half of the league's signal-callers.
CBS placed Tagovailoa in Tier 4, which it referred to as "Volatile Veterans."
The medical conversation can't be oversold here; Tagovailoa has played one full season in five years with the Miami Dolphins. Aside from that, he's been polarizing, offering top-shelf accuracy (68.1% career completion rate) but struggling mightily when pressed to create plays out of script when it counts. - Cody Benjamin, CBS.
Tagovailoa played in and started just 11 games for Miami last season after suffering a nasty concussion in Week 2 versus the Buffalo Bills that sidelined him for four games. Then, a hip injury late in the season cost Tagovailoa two more contests.
Tagovailoa completed 72.9% of his passes for 2,867 yards and 19 touchdowns against seven picks in 2024.
Tagovailoa finds himself among fellow veteran quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, Geno Smith, Trevor Lawrence, Kyler Murray and Sam Darnold in Tier 4.
Tier 1 featured CBS' "Transcendent Talents." That group included Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts and Jayden Daniels.
Tier 2—CBS' "Borderline Stars"—featured Matthew Stafford, Jared Goff, Brock Purdy, Jordan Love, Justin Herbert, Dak Prescott, Baker Mayfield and C.J. Stroud.
Tier 3 welcomed "Promising Prospects" Bo Nix, Caleb Williams, J.J. McCarthy and Drake Maye.
Though it's just been the lone season where Tagovailoa has played in and started all 17 games for the Dolphins thus far, the 27-year-old led the league in passing during that 2023 campaign. Tagovailoa racked up an NFL-best 4,624 passing yards and had 29 touchdowns against 14 interceptions in 2023.

Browns Issue ‘Passive' Seven-Word Message on Rookie QB Shedeur Sanders
Browns Issue 'Passive' Seven-Word Message on Rookie QB Shedeur Sanders originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There are prizes and there are pitfalls to celebrity. As the son of the legendary Deion Sanders - over the years a controversial figure in his own right - Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders surely knows this. Advertisement A projected first-round pick, Sanders' fall to Round 5 was the top story of the 2025 NFL Draft, with the view being simply that the QB wasn't worthy of the hype. He's now the fourth quarterback on Cleveland's wacky depth chart, and ideally is focused on speeding his way up that chart ... But instead ... On June 5, Sanders was ticketed for speeding, going 91 mph in a 65-mph zone. Fewer than two weeks later, on June 17, he was pulled over again for going 101 mph in a 60-mph zone. At Browns tight end Davis Njoku's charity softball event, Sanders' response to those speeding tickets went viral. 'I'm just a little boy … I made some wrong choices personally,' Sanders said. 'I gotta own up to them. I made some not-great choices. I learn from 'em. I learn. I learn.' Advertisement Wrong answer. The Browns have also responded. 'He is taking care of the tickets,' Browns spokesman Peter John-Baptiste said, per Again ... wrong answer. Shedeur's quote merits criticism. So does the Browns' by-rote seven-word address. And here's the problem with all of that, in combination with Daddy Deion's position that his kids never do anything wrong and that they have long been persecuted for being famous: Somebody needs to tell this "kid'' (Shedeur is actually 23) that motorists who drive at around 100 MPH when it's around twice the posted speed limit ... Sometimes die. Sometimes kill other people. Advertisement It that worthy of something more than Deion's deflections, Shedeur's cuteness and the Browns' auto-reply? Browns Must 'Pump The Brakes' On Handing The Keys to Shedeur Sanders
Browns Must 'Pump The Brakes' On Handing The Keys to Shedeur Sanders originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's an easy but apt pun. Yes, Shedeur Sanders should "pump the brakes.'' And so should the Cleveland Browns, when it comes to the notion of handing over the franchise keys (yes, another easy pun) to a self-admitted "little boy'' who is presently a fifth-round rookie trying to work his way up from being a fourth-string quarterback. Advertisement The legendary Deion Sanders has long has it backwards when it comes to his family's audience. "Coach Prime'' - the iconic Dallas Cowboys star who is in the Hall of Famer as the greatest cover cornerback ever - often suggests that he and his sons are persecuted and picked on because of their fame ... When in fact the opposite is true. Mountains have been moved to keep the Sanders family happy and defense mechanisms from Dad have been constructed to protect the offspring and the brand. Recently, Deion said Shedeur is "a young man that has never been in trouble.'' And of course, all things are relative. Advertisement Shedeur's ticket for driving 101 mph in a 60 mph zone this week was recently noted ... and it's now been uncovered that the high-profile rookie quarterback was pulled over for the same offense on June 5 for driving 91 mph in a 65 mph zone. Additionally, according to public records, Shedeur last recently failed to appear in court for arraignment on the first speeding ticket ... right before he got the second one. None of this makes Shedeur a criminal. But in a business in which the starting QB of an NFL team is best-served by having some characteristics of a mature CEO? When Shedeur recently sort of laughed off the speeding issue by saying, "I know I be vibin', bruh ... I'm just a little boy. I made some wrong choices, personally, and I gotta own up to 'em. I made some, you know, not great choices. I learn from 'em. I learn. I learn''? Advertisement That doesn't make Shedeur qualified to lead. Not yet. Biggest picture? People who drive nearly twice the posted speed limit sometimes die - and take other lives with them. There's nothing cute about that. So when Browns watchers like Terry Pluto suggest the Browns "pump the brakes'' on going overboard with Shedeur? And when we chastise Deion (who we've known on a personal level for 33 years? The Sanders family isn't being persecuted; it's being warned that "I'm just a little boy'' does not in the long term work in football ... or in life. Related: Steelers' T.J. Browns Ex-First-Rounder Involved In Trade Buzz with Eagles
Browns Ex-First-Rounder Involved In Trade Buzz with Eagles originally appeared on Athlon Sports. If the Cleveland Browns are serious about moving off of cornerback Greg Newsome II, as is rumored? It seems the defending Super Bowl champions from Philadelphia might want to move in. Advertisement Philly seems pretty stout in the secondary, with young stars like Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, so we're not sure what the attraction to Newsome is ... Unless there is a sense that the Browns - who selected Newsome in the first round (26th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft - simply want to give up on something that once seems special. Newsome was named to the All-Rookie Team after finishing his rookie season with 37 combined tackles and nine pass deflections in 12 games. He was good again in 2023 as he posted career-highs with 49 tackles, 14 passes defensed and two interceptions, including a big-time pick-six against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. But he got demoted last year, even after the Browns ended up exercising Newsome's fifth-year option worth $13.37 million guaranteed. And then got hurt, his season ending prematurely when he was placed on IR with a hamstring injury. Advertisement It is possible that Cleveland simply doesn't want to give him a contract beyond this year ... and on that note, we wonder if the Eagles really want to absorb Newsome's $13.3 million fully guaranteed contract for 2025. At just 25 years old, Newsome's best chance for success might be a change of scenery ... especially if that involves chasing a Super Bowl, something that's not likely happening in Cleveland any time soon.
