Cklamovski credits unique training camp for Malaysia's 4-0 win
National football team head coach Peter Cklamovski has described the recent training camp ahead of their 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifier against Vietnam as 'a unique one', highlighting its importance in fostering the squad's 'team mentality' and cohesion.
Speaking after Harimau Malaya's commendable performance in their second Group F match, Cklamovski acknowledged the unconventional nature of the camp, especially since many players had not played competitive football since the Malaysian Super League was off-season.
'Well, it was a bit of a puzzle, this camp was a unique camp. The majority of the players were off-season from the Malaysian Super League. Faced tough opponents against Cape Verde, which you know, again was another good team performance.
'...and then that continued on to the final phase where we get some new players in, they committed to the team mentality we're building, the training mentality we're building, you saw the quality that we're growing as a team,' he said at a post-match press conference at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium last night.
Speaking about the squad setup, Cklamovski emphasised the necessity of depth and versatility rather than depending entirely on a set starting lineup.
'We make subs and we want to take our game to another level and make impacts off the bench. But you know, we don't rely on the best 11. We're an A-Team and that's the mentality we're growing, and it's growing the right way. The mentality in the team's strong and we'll continue to build our mentality for team performances,' he said.
Last night, Malaysia ended an eleven-year winless streak against Vietnam with a 4-0 victory, courtesy of goals from Joao Figueiredo, Rodrigo Holgado, Corbin Ong, and Dion Cools.

Sri Pahang out, 13 teams in for 2025–26 M-League season
KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — Sri Pahang FC have confirmed that they will not participate in the Malaysia League (M-League) this season despite being granted a National License by the First Instance Body (FIB). The Malaysian Football League (MFL) announced in a statement that the 'Elephants' squad, which received the 2025/26 national license, has decided not to compete in the M-League by submitting a confirmation letter dated June 16. The decision will see 13 teams participating in the new season which will begin on August 8. 'All clubs have been granted the 2025-2026 National License by the independent First Instance Body (FIB) with the club from Brunei, DPMM FC, being granted approval from the International Football Association Board (FIFA) and the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) to compete in the 2025-2026 Malaysia League. 'However, Sri Pahang FC, which also received the 2025-2026 National License, have decided not to compete in the Malaysia League this season by submitting a confirmation letter dated 16 June 2025,' said MFL in a statement issued on its Facebook page today. According to MFL, the clubs competing in the championship this time are Johor Darul Ta'zim FC (JDT), Selangor FC, Penang FC, Kuching City FC, Sabah FC, Terengganu FC, Negeri Sembilan FC, Kelantan Darul Naim FC, Kuala Lumpur City FC, PDRM FC and DPMM FC and two clubs from AFL A1, namely Melaka FC and Imigresen FC. Commenting further, MFL announced that this season's Malaysian League calendar will begin with a clash between JDT, the Super League champion and Selangor, the Super League runners-up in the Charity Shield match on August 8, 2025, which is also the league's opening match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Johor. Meanwhile, the FA Cup tournament will begin in mid-August, the Malaysia Cup and MFL Challenge Cup in January 2026. MFL also announced that this season's Malaysian League calendar will run for 10 months, after last season's adjustment which lasted 14 months to align the schedule with international leagues. 'MFL will release the 2025-2026 Malaysian League schedule soon as MFL is facing constraints in completing the full schedule for the season since the AFC will only hold its draw for the ACL Elite and ACL 2 competitions involving JDT and Selangor FC on August 15. FAM introduces ‘Elite Games' project to scout future Harimau Malaya talents
THE Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has introduced the 'Elite Games' project aimed at scouting talented young players with the potential to don the Harimau Malaya jersey in the future. National Under-23 (U-23) head coach Mohd Nafuzi Zain said an initial group of 26 players from across the country will be called up for the project's first camp, scheduled from June 23 to 26. He said the inaugural camp also formed part of preparations to shortlist 30 players for centralised training ahead of the ASEAN U-23 Championship 2025, to be held in Jakarta from July 15 to 29. 'We have many young players with potential, so the Elite Games initiative is to monitor them in preparation for the ASEAN U-23 Championship. 'We'll bring in players from June 23 to 25 for a short stint, during which we'll conduct sparring games where players compete against each other. If they perform well, they stand a chance of being included in the 30-man squad for the ASEAN U-23 central training camp,' he told reporters today. He said the centralised training for the ASEAN U-23 tournament will run from July 1 to 12 before the team departs for Jakarta on July 13. Malaysia have been drawn into Group A alongside host nation Indonesia, the Philippines and Brunei for the ASEAN U-23 Championship 2025, which runs from July 15 to 29 in Jakarta. The national U-23 side will kick off their campaign against the Philippines on July 15, followed by matches against Brunei on July 18 and Indonesia on July 21. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals scheduled for July 25, with the third-place playoff and final set for July 29. Meanwhile, Harimau Malaya technical director Tan Cheng Hoe said the 'Elite Games' project was the result of discussions with national team head coach Peter Cklamovski and Mohd Nafuzi. He said beyond the ASEAN U-23 tournament, the initiative will also help Mohd Nafuzi prepare for the AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers 2026 from Sept 3–9 and the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, scheduled from Dec 9-20. Cheng Hoe also expressed hope that the programme could be held monthly, with a focus on identifying emerging talent from U-20 and U-18 players nationwide, who could later be included in the Harimau Malaya squad.
