Karur textile cluster to deepen focus on sustainability & circularity

A crucial awareness workshop on 'Advancing Sustainability & Circularity in Karur Textile Cluster' was organised in the Karur textile cluster last week. The event brought together local manufacturers, exporters, industry associations, and government officials to discuss and commit to greener practices. Major programmes aimed at promoting sustainability and circularity will support the industry in adopting environmentally friendly production methods.
Eminent speakers from the government and industry set the context for the workshop discussions. P Gopalakrishnan, president of Karur Textile Manufacturers Exporters Association (KTMEA), in his inaugural address, emphasised the need for sustainable growth, staying updated with the latest national and international developments, and showcasing the strength and potential of the Karur cluster.
An awareness workshop on 'Advancing Sustainability & Circularity in Karur Textile Cluster' gathered manufacturers, exporters, and officials to promote eco-friendly practices. Industry leaders and experts shared sustainable initiatives and global trends. Programmes by CRB, Intellecap, and InTex India aim to support SMEs in adopting circular models.
M Prabhu, chairman of CII - Karur District, delivered an industry address reaffirming CII-Karur's vision and commitment, and shared good practices from other sectors that could be adapted by the textile industry. R Kaliyappan, president of the Karur Handloom Export Cloth Manufacturers Association (KHEXMASS), highlighted the spirit of sustainability and the responsibility to leave a cleaner, greener planet for future generations.
M Palanivel Rajan, chief operating officer of Asian Fabricx Private Limited, shared information about the progressive practices at Asian Fabricx and also highlighted sustainable initiatives undertaken by the Karur cluster. S Periasamy, a senior textile expert and sustainability advisor to the Tiruppur Exporters Association, addressed the workshop on 'Global Trends and the Relevance of Sustainability & Opportunities for SMEs'.
Key programmes were also discussed, with relevant information shared with industry participants. Dr. Prabhat Bhuddha Dev from CRB and Siddharth Lulla from Intellecap presented their initiatives and invited SMEs to actively participate. InTex India has initiated a project for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Karur cluster, which will provide hands-on support for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to at least 15 SMEs. The programme will also engage key stakeholders in developing and implementing a vision for a sustainable and circular textile cluster in Karur.
Intellecap, through its Circular Apparel Innovation Factory (CAIF) initiative, is implementing the programme 'Catalyzing the Green Transition of India's Textile & Apparel Value Chain', with support from the European Union under its Switch Asia Initiative. This 42-month initiative focuses on reducing environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions across 250–400 SMEs in key clusters of India's textile and apparel value chain.

Green Tourism Circuit in Pala awaits take off

More than a decade after receiving administrative sanction, the Green Tourism Circuit project in Pala remains a non-starter due to lack of interest shown by the authorities concerned. With work stalled for over three years, speculation is now mounting that the government may shelve the project. 'The project office in Pala was shut down three years ago and the staff were transferred. We now hear that the government order (GO) related to the project is also likely to be withdrawn,' said an official source. Pala, the gateway Launched in 2013 during the tenure of the previous United Democratic Front government with K.M. Mani as Finance Minister, the project aimed at boosting domestic tourism and pilgrimage in the eastern high ranges of Kottayam district. It was envisioned as a circuit connecting religious and tourist destinations such as Illikkal Kallu, Ilaveezhapoonchira, Marmala Aruvi, Ayyampara, Wagamon and the Nalambalam temples. Pala was envisioned as the gateway, with supporting infrastructure like basic amenities. Also, revenue lands were earmarked at Marmala, Ilaveezhapoonchira, and Illikkal Kallu for setting up visitor facilities. To implement the ₹145-crore project, a Green Tourism Circuit Society was constituted, which was later restructured in 2017 under the chairmanship of the Tourism Minister. A major milestone came in October 2020 when Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the Green Tourism Complex in Pala town, regarded as a flagship component of the circuit. But no progress was made from there. Earlier, work had been initiated to improve facilities at pilgrimage centres such as the Ramapuram Nalambalam, Bharananganam Sree Krishnaswamy temple, Edappadi Ananda Shanmuga Swamy temple and the Ezhacheri Umamaheswara temple. Steps were also taken to offer transportation services from Pala to various centres.

2 more Chinese rakes come to help Purple, Orange lines

Kolkata: After Dalian, Kolkata Metro now boasts of Zhuzhou rakes. Six years after the city got its first foreign rake from CNR Dalian Locomotive & Rolling Stock Co, another Chinese manufacturer has forayed into Kolkata Metro with arrival of two rakes from China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) Zhuzhou Locomotive Company. Unlike Dalian rakes, which have been shipped since March 2019 from the Chinese manufacturer's own stable to Kolkata Port, the Zhuzhou rakes are assembled at the Indian Railway-owned Integral Coach Factory, Perambur near Chennai. Six more such state-of-the-art rakes with propulsion systems manufactured in China will arrive next year to expand and modernise city's Metro network. "The Zhuzhou rakes' propulsion system is from China. The rakes are being assembled in ICF," a senior Metro Railway official told TOI. The propulsion system in a modern metro rake is an energy-efficient, three-phase drive system with Variable Voltage Variable Frequency (VVVF) control. The devices can store the braking energy and reuse it in the acceleration phases. Metro Railway placed orders for eight rakes from Zhuzhou. The city's Metro line, spanning 61 km across Blue (North-South), Green (East-West Metro), Purple, and Orange lines, is reeling under a rake shortage.
