Past mountainous warehouses, down a listless canal, and into the quiet academic quarter with its beige halls soaring into skies that never seem to cease to rain, stands Manchester Museum. With the institution freshly glistening with ' European Museum of the Year 2025 ' status, I ventured in to see if this superlative accolade is justified, immersing myself in ancient earrings, psychedelic rickshaws and the tooth of an 80-million-year-old shark, the mellow rain of Manchester pattering on the roof.
The museum's purpose is written in the atrium: 'To build understanding between cultures and a more sustainable world.' This isn't really a museum about Manchester, more of artefacts, animals and artworks that have ended up in the museum's collection, and a mosaic of perspectives from ethnic minority communities living in, studying at, or in some way associated with Manchester. It strives to be 'the most inclusive, imaginative and caring museum you'll ever visit'.
Essentially, the museum is about belonging. It is this bold curatorial line that gives it a distinctive flavour, with each of the four main galleries contributing to the central theme in interesting and surprising ways. I first entered Ancient History, Contemporary Belonging, a gallery of ancient and medieval artefacts from Anatolian earrings to marvellously-preserved Roman playing pieces, ancient Egyptian cat idols to hoards of delicate medieval silver coins.
The rooms are a little over-stuffed, and some of the information plaques positioned so low that all the stooping became exhausting. I had to be economical in what I examined, but this made me worry that I was overlooking some gems, sometimes quite literally.
Despite these gripes – entrance is free, anyhow, so you can always come back – a strong flavour of displacement emerged, a synergy between the migration of ancient historical objects and of people. More topical than ever at a time when George Osborne is reportedly negotiating a 'reciprocal, long-term loan' which would send the Elgin Marbles back to Greece, it was hard to peruse the collection without wondering how on earth so many of these rare finds ended up in Manchester and the answers, one suspects, are not always savoury.
You're encouraged to consider the human stories of migration, the sometimes traumatic tales of persecution, forced upheaval and dreams of a better life that help to explain how a Mesopotamian hair-pin fetched up in front of you.
Many museums now engage in this kind of soul-searching, but here it is taken a step further. Manchester University students of migrant heritage have been invited to respond. The juxtaposition of an 'official' plaque next to a personal response presents a person's lived experience as an echo of the narrative.
On paper, this is fraught with risk, threatening to debase the whole thing into mawkish amateurishness. But many of the responses are in fact profoundly moving, making the galleries feel less lofty and academic than their equivalents in, say, the Ashmolean or the British Museum.
The next gallery focuses on animals that belong – or should belong, if we weren't doing so much to make the earth uninhabitable. Cinematically lit, with a veritable menagerie of taxidermy and lifelike models, this is an emporium of wonder, at times a cacophony of delighted children's wails.
It was exhilarating to stare into the eyes of an African hunting dog, a North American woodchuck, or Maude the tigon – a cross between a male tiger and a lioness, once a beloved feature of Manchester's Belle Vue Zoo – finally on display after 70 long years existing as a rolled-up skin in a storage vault.
Stuck on one glass panel, in stark red letters, is the word 'Decolonise!' – signalling its inclusion in the museum's Decolonise! Trail. Of course, this will make some people groan. But the manner in which it is done, at least, is original. It feels like a Just Stop Oil-style organisation has placed it here; a performative act of self-sabotage.
It's just one act of curatorial dandyism. Elsewhere, an empty glass box commemorates species that became extinct. In another display, the stuffed heads of tigers and lions loom like phantoms of guilt over black-and-white photographs of hunters.
It's only when the curatorial voice slips from posing questions to telling you the answers that the device galls. I felt this peering into a surrealist reconstruction of a curator's office, eerily frozen in time since the 1920s, all mahogany desks and exotic bric-a-brac. It is, we are told, 'like a glimpse of our colonial unconscious' – yet all I could think about was how cosy and charming it looked compared with soulless modern offices.
The South Asia Gallery – bright, airy, perfectly spaced – casts a spotlight on the experiences of British Asian communities. Scenes of oppression, violence and starvation under the East India Company and the Raj are included, as one might expect, appearing as incongruously beautiful panels in the atrium. Objects that were 'violently plundered', were are told, have not been included.
One of the most poignant parts of this gallery are the displays that bring to life 'hidden' voices within British-Asian communities. The prejudice historically felt by mixed-race Asians is rendered palpable and real. The exhibition on LGBT people of British Asian heritage is particularly moving: their feelings of loneliness, confusion and self-loathing, as well as hope, are all conjured from cuttings from 1990s magazines, help forum notices and leaflets.
A final gallery attempts the same thing (slightly less successfully) from an East Asian perspective. I was fascinated to learn that Manchester has a higher proportion of Chinese émigrés than any other city in Europe. It's one of the few revelations we get about Manchester itself. I hankered for more on how this great industrial behemoth came to be, and its later metamorphosis into a modern city of culture.
Many, no doubt, would find the emphasis upon displacement, multicultural identity and preserving the environment preachy and over-rehearsed. Some might even declare the whole thing a Trojan's Horse of woke tosh (when I'd read that the museum has 'safe spaces' for anyone who finds the exhibitions traumatising, I did cringe). But Manchester Museum nails its colours to the mast. And it's only fair to judge something by what it is trying to achieve. Does it succeed on its own terms? Overwhelmingly, yes.

AN unusual attraction that is a "Disney for history lovers" has been raved about by a Countryfile star. Matt Baker, currently appearing in Matt Baker's British Isles, has confessed that he's a huge fan of the 'living museum of the North'. 5 5 When Sun Travel asked Matt Baker where he'd recommend anyone to visit on a trip to Durham, he simply answered "Beamish". He continued: "It's the best open air museum in the world, without question. "Basically what they do is take down buildings in the North East and put them back up at Beamish, and go around on all old trams, there's old villages, farms - you can even stay there now and have a historic stay over at Beamish. "It's amazing, it's basically the North East through the ages and you can spend days there." Beamish is a world famous open air museum in the town of Stanely and the first of its kind to open in the region. It brings the history of North East England to life. You can have a Georgian experience at Pockerly Old Hall or see how families lived and worked in the years leading up to the First World War in the 1900s. One of the recent installations was Spain's Field Farm which stood for centuries in Eastgate near Weardale in Durham. It was then dismantled and transported to the museum, where it was been carefully rebuilt to show 1950s life on the region's upland farms. In 2024 Beamish opened a new 1950s town, which includes a toy shop, welfare hall and a cinema that had been taken from Ryhope in Sunderland and rebuilt. There's also a pub, a school, a dentist among its businesses and you can ride on the trams and buses, and explore the railway station too. Matt Baker Explores the British Isles 5 Matt added: "There's loads of exhibitions and shops, you can have coal-fired fish and chips, it's the most brilliant day out." "It's like Disney World for history buffs - that's the only way I can describe it. You get transported back in time, it's a proper immersive experience." You can even see Matt on a trip to the living museum if you catch up on one of his previous shows. He told us: "I did a series called 'Travels with Mum & Dad' and we went all over the North East, so if you are fascinated and want to find out more watch that because we went to Beamish." 5 Tickets to the open air museum are unlimited passes so once you've been once, you can visit for the whole year including daytime events. Adult tickets cost £33, senior and student tickets cost £25, children between 5-16 are £20. As for other places to explore around his stomping ground, Matt recommended Durham Cathedral and the High Force waterfall in Teesdale. He also suggested taking a walk in the Durham Dales and strolling along the coastline. He's found beautiful beaches on the Northern Irish coastline and discovered tasty sparkling wine at a Champagne-worthy vineyard in Kent. Nyetimber was the first British producer to release a prestige cuvee back in 2018, and it's now served to first class passengers on British Airways flights. Obviously, it's a little pricier than most at £145 a bottle, but the same vineyard's Classic Cuvee Brut comes in at a much more affordable £30. And if you fancy a trip to an award-winning winery, book in for a tour and tasting at the Nyetimber Estate on the South Downs, £50 per person. 6 With the Wimbledon Tennis Championships starting on June 30, the smell of strawberries is definitely in the air, so we were excited to discover this treat from the family-run Lyme Bay Winery in picturesque East Devon. The new Lyme Bay Winery Strawberry Wine, £12.79, tastes wonderful served chilled or as a spritzer with lemonade, prosecco or soda water. The perfect picnic wine! 6 Finally, if you're doing your big shop in Tesco, be sure to check out its fantastic line in English Wines, starting from just £4.75 a bottle. Graham Nash, lead product development manager at Tesco says: "Last year, our Tesco Finest English Sparkling Brut was our bestselling English wine, though English still wines continue to improve." Try the Bolney Lychgate Bacchus, £12.50, made in the heart of Sussex, if you like a lemony, floral, fresh white. And fans of a rose will find Tesco Finest English Rose, £12.50, rather moreish, plus it's made by father and son winemaker Balfour Winery. And if cash is tight, The Straw Hat White, £4.75, is a fun British option. WINE culturist Amelia Singer hails 'The Chassaux et Fils Rosé' as a "really savvy move from Aldi". Here, she gives Fabulous her verdict... Sainte Victoire is my favourite part of Provence to find personality filled yet great value Rosé. Thanks to the altitude of the Sainte Victoire hillsides, the grapes get exposed to plenty of sunshine during the day but their ripeness is moderated by cooler evening temperatures. This enables the wine to brim with intense, complex fruit which is balanced by elegant acidity and herbal finesse. I am delighted that Aldi are highlighting an actual area of Provence as quality and flavour profiles can vary greatly – however I always know with Rosé from Sainte Victoire that I will not be disappointed. Urgent warning over alarming spike in killer virus in four holiday hotspots - bug can cause liver failure

Holidaymakers jetting off to four popular European destinations could be at risk of deadly 'dirty hands disease' experts warn. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has identified a surge in hepatitis A infections sweeping through Europe, after nine people died from the virus. Hepatitis A—which is caused by a virus spread via contaminated faeces making its way into food and drink—can be deadly, causing catastrophic liver failure. Now health officials have confirmed 2,097 cases of the disease, across four popular holiday destinations including Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. According to a new ECDC report, Slovakia has been hit the hardest in terms of the sheer number of cases, with 880 confirmed in 2025 alone. Cases in Austria have already topped last year's figures, with 87 confirmed diagnoses including three deaths this year. Hungary has so far reported 530 cases this year, mostly among adults. But, the Czech Republic—with 600 cases—has reported the most deaths linked to the virus, with six fatalities following serious liver infections, with young children the most likely to fall victim. Because the virus is spread through contact with faeces—giving it the name 'dirty hand disease'—children who don't wash their hands properly before eating are more likely to contract it. Hepatitis A has few noticeable symptoms in its early stages but if left untreated can lead to liver failure and even prove fatal. Signs of the infection include a high temperature, flu-like symptoms—such as fatigue, headache and muscle pains—nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, pale grey coloured faeces and itchy skin. In more severe cases, an infected person's skin and eyes may appear yellow—a condition known as jaundice and a serious sign the liver is struggling to function. But the NHS warns that most children, and some adults, may have no symptoms indicating they are infected. Dr Barbora Macková, chief hygienist and director of the Czech Republic, said: 'In the current epidemiological situation, we recommend getting vaccinated before the start of holidays and vacations.' The warning comes as the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is tracking a mystery spike in Hepatitis A infections in Britain, after 95 people developed a serious liver infection, with 58 so ill they needed to be hospitalised. Officials have reported two separate clusters of the virus across the UK, with 53 cases having been reported since December 2024 alone in the latest wave. Analysis of patient interviews has linked the outbreak to an unnamed specific food item purchased from an unnamed supermarket, which most patients reported consuming before falling ill. No deaths in Britain linked to the outbreak have yet been reported. Anyone who has not been vaccinated or previously infected is at a higher risk of catching Hepatitis A. Patients diagnosed with the virus are advised not to drink alcohol, prepare food or drink for other people, have sex without a barrier method like a condom, or share needles with others until they are no longer infectious. This is usually around seven days after initial symptoms start, for those who do not have jaundice. Hepatitis A vaccines are not routinely given in the UK due to the generally low risk of getting the infection. But the NHS does advise the jab for travellers heading to places where the virus is more common. These include parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Central and South America. Hepatitis A very rarely rare cause of death in the UK — between 2005 and 2021, only 42 deaths were recorded with the virus as an underlying cause.
