Iraqi man killed and devoured by pet lion he tried to tame just days after buying it
A 50-year-old man, Aqil Fakhr al-Din, was mauled and partially devoured by his pet lion in Kufa, Iraq, just days after purchasing the animal, according to a report from Al-Ghad newspaper, as quoted by Metro. The incident took place last Thursday when al-Din, who had a history of keeping wild animals, was fatally attacked in his garden.

Al-Din had recently acquired the lion with plans to tame it, housing it in a cage alongside other exotic animals on his property. However, the situation turned tragic when the lion suddenly lashed out. A source told Al-Ghad that the predator lunged at al-Din as he approached the enclosure, biting him in the neck and chest.
As per the outlet, the neighbour, hearing al-Din's screams, rushed to his aid, grabbing a Kalashnikov rifle to try to save him. After firing seven shots, the neighbour managed to kill the lion, as confirmed by the Shafaq News Agency. Footage shared on social media shows the lion's lifeless body lying in a pool of blood on the grass, with cages visible in the background of the garden.
Emergency services arrived at the scene, and al-Din's body was transported to Al-Sadr Medical City Hospital in Najaf. Police have since launched an investigation into the incident. The authorities revealed to Rudaw news network that the lion was put down after refusing to leave the remains of its owner.

The death of Al-Din follows a similar event in Kenya, where a 14-year-old girl was killed by a lion. The lion, believed to have escaped from Nairobi National Park, entered a residential compound on the outskirts of the city and attacked the girl, dragging her away. A friend of the victim raised the alarm, and Kenya Wildlife Service rangers later found the girl's body with severe injuries.

ACB arrests absconding cop in bribery case in Jammu
The anti corruption bureau (ACB) on Saturday arrested a police head constable, who had been absconding in a bribery case in Kathua district, said officials. Din had escaped a trap laid by ACB in Kathua recently. 'The accused had demand and accepted illegal gratification from the complainant for removing his name from the list of accused persons in a case FIR number 193/2025 registered at Kathua police station, even though the complainant had provided CCTV footage to prove his innocence,' said an official spokesperson. However, the head constable had demanded a bribe of ₹15,000 to remove his name from the list of accused, he added. 'A trap was laid by the ACB recently but the accused cop, who sensed presence of ACB sleuths escaped from the spot,' said the spokesperson. The bribe money was recovered from the bushes by independent witnesses and seized. 'Now, ACB Jammu finally arrested the absconding head constable and further investigation of the case has been initiated,' he added.

J&K: ACB arrests tehsildar for taking Rs 1 lakh as bribe for nod to cut trees
The Anti-Corruption Bureau of J&K Saturday said it has arrested a tehsildar for allegedly demanding Rs 1 lakh as bribe from a Handwara resident for permission to fell walnut trees. An ACB statement said the complainant accused Ghulam Rasool Bhat, tehsildar, Kralgund, of taking Rs 50,000 as advance and still not issuing the permission for cutting the trees. The complainant said he told the revenue official that he could not afford to pay the money, but the tehsildar insisted on full payment. Pointing out that a discreet inquiry was initiated into the matter, the statement said after verification of facts, a case was registered against the tehsildar and his tout Rafi Ahmad Lone. An ACB team caught two men and during a search of the tehsildar's premises, recovered Rs 50,000 allegedly paid by the complainant, besides another bundle of Rs 79,000. The accused were presented before a court which remanded them in police custody for seven days, the agency said. In another case, the ACB arrested a police head constable, Roshan Din, who was on the run after being spotted taking the bribe. Din had demanded Rs 15,000 from the complainant for deleting his name from a list of accused persons in an FIR despite the fact that the former had provided CCTV footage and attendance at the factory on the date of occurrence to prove his innocence, said the agency. However, while accepting the bribe from the complainant, Din sensed the presence of ACB officials on the spot and fled, the agency said, adding he threw the money in the bushes on the national highway near Palli. The money was recovered by independent witnesses and seized by officials, the agency said. Din was posted at Kathua police station, said the ACB.
