'With this, we can hope' - Afghan cricketers play first match
Female cricketers from Afghanistan hope their first competitive match in Australia will "open doors for Afghan women for education, sport and future". An Afghanistan Women's XI played a 20-over exhibition match against Cricket Without Borders at Melbourne's Junction Oval on Thursday, before the Women's Ashes Test between Australia and England at the nearby Melbourne Cricket Ground.More than 20 members of the Afghanistan national team have been in Australia since the Taliban's return to power in 2021, as female participation in sport in the country has effectively been outlawed. But they are now hoping to send a message of hope and positivity to their country. "We are going to represent millions of Afghan women who are in Afghanistan and denied their rights," player Firoza Amiri told Cricket Australia before the match."It's very special for all of us to get back together after three years, leaving everything and losing everything back home in Afghanistan."In 2020, 25 players were given professional contracts by the Afghanistan Cricket Board but after the Taliban returned and they could no longer play or train safely, they had asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) for permission to play as a refugee team, but this was denied. For the exhibition match, the side could not play under the name of Afghanistan women because they are not recognised as a national team by the ICC and they had to wear a custom-made kit as opposed to the official logo.Benafsha Hashimi, one of the Afghan players, designed the logo which depicted a red tulip and a golden wattle - the national flowers of Australia and Afghanistan - entwined around a cricket ball.
There are two sets of players in Australia, based in Melbourne and Canberra, and the match saw them unite for the first time since their arrival. Many of the players did not speak English when they arrived but had to learn it to help them settle and apply for jobs. Player Nahida Sapan says that the players are always playing for more than just themselves. "We play for Afghanistan, it means a lot for Afghan women because with this, they can and we can hope," Sapan told Cricket Australia. "This match can open doors for Afghan women for education, sport and future."We are building not just a team, we are building a movement for change and improvement."
What is the ICC position?
An ICC working group, set up after the Taliban takeover in 2021, has met with representatives of the Afghanistan government and is keen to use its position and the sport of cricket to influence change in the country."The ICC remains closely engaged with the situation in Afghanistan and continues to collaborate with our members," it said in a statement. The governing body added it was their intention to "support the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in fostering cricket development and ensuring playing opportunities for both men and women in Afghanistan".Its stance is that the ACB is not in control of government policy and therefore players should not be punished for it.In his letter to the ICC, Gould called for the ICC's working group to be reformed, given it is entirely made up of men.

Luke Humphries has say on ‘fartgate' in message to rival James Wade after Players Championship darts win
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) JAMES WADE has proved that flatulent glee gets you everywhere - after the jubilant 'Fartgate' flinger won the support of Luke Humphries. The Machine shrugged off controversy over his loud and less than proud intervention against Peter Wright by winning Players Championship 19. Credit: Getty Wade trumped Scott Williams in the final to move back up to World No. 8. The English oche ace was so overjoyed to be on-song after his pong that he posted a message on X. And he got a surprise reply from Cool Hand, offering him congratulations - albeit with a mischievous twist... Wade, 42, wrote: "Good Morning everyone. Wow!! I'm over the moon you can't believe. Celebrations all round. "As always, thank you to all my supporters and the kind comments. "Thank you to my sponsors and management team!" World No.1 Humphries quickly pinged the pong-row flinger a cheeky response. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK The 2024 Ally Pally king said: "Great farts mate!! I mean 'Darts'." However, fans managed to be even less subtle than Humphries with their rip-ostes. James Wade names two darts stars who should NOT have been invited into Premier League darts One wrote: "You have blown all your opponents away, the smell of success is strong when your on stage." Another mused: "Must be great to let off a bit if steam, although Peter Wright might not agree." The farting furore exploded live on TV during Players Championship 17 when Wade let rip during a 6-5 victory over Wright. Snakebite might be better suited to dealing with stings than stinks - but he initially laughed it off. Referee Owen Binks reminded them "this is a streamed match, guys". Wade then suggested his Scottish opponent 'Give it a second' before he returned to the oche. But Snakebite appeared to believe that time period was a clear under-estimate. Wade went on to not just nick that match but get better as the week wore on - at darts, that is - peaking with the PC19 crown. Yet incredibly it's the second time the Surrey star has been caught in a storm of his own brewing. That blast from the past was at the Players Championship last September when he blamed the noise on velcro from his new trainers.

Florian Wirtz details what Arne Slot did to persuade him to make Liverpool move
Liverpool have sealed the signing of Germany star Florian Wirtz in a club record deal worth an initial £100million, with a further £16m possible in add ons - after Kop boss Arne Slot compelled the player to head to Anfield Florian Wirtz has revealed how Arne Slot turned on the charm to persuade him to make Liverpool his new home. The Germany star has completed a club record move to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool have sealed a deal to pay an initial £100million, with £16m in performance-related add-ons. It is understood Liverpool will be happy to pay these 'aspirational bonuses' as it will mean they have enjoyed considerable success at elite level. If he does indeed hit all those bonuses, it will make Wirtz the most expensive player in British history, surpassing the £115m that Chelsea paid Brighton for midfielder Moises Caicedo. Wirtz, 22, has signed a five-year deal at Anfield - worth £50million. The Reds stepped up as Bayern Munich faltered, their 18-month pursuit coming unstuck as they played games in the German media with regards to what they would be prepared to pay Leverkusen, before Wirtz was left underwhelmed by a final meeting with head coach Vincent Kompany. In stark contrast both he and his family were blown away by Liverpool's pitch and particularly the first meeting with Dutch boss Slot. 'The conversations were always really good,' said Wirtz. 'I can remember the first time [we met] he already showed me some scenes and how he wants to play, how I could fit in the team. 'He was just telling me I'm a player he really wants to have in his team and I can bring the team a step forward, and I could just imagine it would be good to be in the team and to make it better. I have to make my performances every week but I'm here for this.' Wirtz admits he wanted to make a major step up when moving clubs this summer, and believes he has done just that by moving to Merseyside. 'I just thought that it was the right point in my career to make the next step and of course I wanted to get to a club that is from the top three in the world,' adds Wirtz. 'In my opinion, Liverpool is one of them. 'I just saw myself in the best hands in Liverpool. I was really convinced by the people here, by the idea, and everything what the club offers me was really good. 'Every time I spoke to one of the [people from] the club, I felt like 'this is the place I want to be. And so in the end, I was really 100 percent convinced I want to join Liverpool. And it was the best choice.' Wirtz has also been learning English ahead of his move - having been taught at Leverkusen by another Liverpool new boy, Jeremie Frimpong. "He was my neighbour in the changing room, he sat directly next to me and I had to speak English with him," Wirtz reveals. "After I finished my school, I didn't really speak good English but he was teaching me a lot and making me speak in more English and better English."
