Japan's Asics to boost India sportswear production to 40% amid import restrictions, executive says
Japanese sportswear giant Asics will ramp up India manufacturing to 40%from 30% over the next few years to ensure steady supply, a top executive told Reuters, as the country's regulations force global brands to pause imports of footwear.
The Indian government has mandated certain standards for various footwear segments, requiring both domestic and foreign manufacturers to obtain quality certifications.
Asics, which has also paused imports, said bringing in footwear from any country is not feasible without government certification.
"To address this critical situation, we are strategically developing local production capabilities," Asics India Managing Director Rajat Khurana said.
For financial year 2024-25, Asics reached 30% local production, a government-mandated threshold that allows foreign brands to operate their own single-brand stores in India.
The firm, which operates roughly 125stores through franchise partners, plans to open its first brand-owned store this year and is scouting locations in and around Delhi and Mumbai, Khurana said. It aims to set up a couple more over the next few years.
Asics, which competes with global rivals including Nike, Adidas, and Skechers USA in India, also plans to open threenew franchise stores per month between now and the end of the year.
For 2024-25, Asics projected revenue growth of 35%-37% in India, following a 26% jump in the previous fiscal year that lifted its revenue to Rs.428 crores.
Known for its running shoes, Asics is benefiting from a growing fitness culture in India and rising interest in tennis and pickleball among affluent urban consumers.
The local sporting goods and apparel category is expected to double to $58 billion by 2030 from 2023 levels, according to a 2024 report by consultancy firm Deloitte.

"He's understanding where he's at, and where we're at. As time goes on we'll get to a certain point, but there's no sense in rushing it." Ohtani is widely regarded as a modern-day Babe Ruth, a rarity in baseball in that he combines elite hitting and pitching. Last year he became the first player in history to score 50 home runs and nab 50 stolen bases in a season -- a statistical feat once regarded as unthinkable -- before helping the Dodgers win last year's World Series. Sunday's home run was his 26th of the season, a tally that has helped the Dodgers move to the top of the National League West division.

Princesse tam tam and Comptoir des Cotonniers heading for receivership
Another major French fashion player is under threat. has learnt that fashion retailer Comptoir des Cotonniers and lingerie chain Princesse tam tam are heading towards receivership proceedings. The owner of the two chains, Japanese group Fast Retailing, is about to file for receivership for both. The application is set to be filed with the Paris trade court on Friday June 20, sources close to the matter have told The two chains, bought by Fast Retailing in 2005, have been battling the fashion market's headwinds for several years, having been reorganised three times in succession, in 2018, 2021 and 2023. The move that will make it easier for the two chains to go into receivership was made by Fast Retailing in September 2024, when it decided to merge the two businesses into a single corporate entity, under the Fast Retailing France company. The latter doesn't include the lucrative business of Uniqlo in France, whose 30 stores are run by a European holding company based in London. With the reorganisation carried out two years ago, Princesse tam tam deployed a redundancy plan that led to the closure of 27 out of 69 stores, for a loss of 84 out of 235 jobs, while Comptoir des Cotonniers closed 28 out of 67 stores and slashed 101 out of 272 jobs. The chains are currently operating a total of nearly 90 stores, approximately 50 for Princesse tam tam and about 40 for Comptoir des Cotonniers. In spring 2024, in an effort to revive their fortunes, the chains, led by Kunii San, announced they were cutting retail prices by approximately 30%, in order to attract a broader clientèle, notably 25 to 35-year-olds. They also forged closer links with Uniqlo, dropping joint capsule collections and opening shop-in-shops within Uniqlo stores. Comptoir des Cotonniers, which became part of Fast Retailing exactly 20 years ago, was an extremely popular brand in the 2000s and 2010s in France, characterised by a casual-chic style and adverts chiefly featuring mothers and daughters. The brand was founded in 1995 by the Elicha family, opening its first stores in the Toulouse area. Princesse tam tam was created 10 years earlier, in 1985, designed by the sisters Loumia and Shama Hiridjee. It carved out a niche for itself in the French fashion landscape with its brightly coloured underwear and swimwear featuring successful prints, taking a sideways step from classic French lace items. Another two fashion chains active in the French retail sector are therefore adding their names to the list of defaults, following the first tremor caused by Camaïeu going into liquidation in 2022. Recently, Jennyfer has liquidated most of its assets, as did Café Coton, while Naf Naf and André have both been placed in receivership. By initiating these proceedings, Fast Retailing has made the decision to no longer give financial support to Princesse tam tam and Comptoir des Cotonniers, and to stop feeding them cash. However, the group is doing extremely well on a global scale. In H1 of fiscal 2024/25, its net income jumped 19.2% to reach ¥233.5 billion (€1.4 billion). Revenue in the period grew by 12% to ¥1.790 trillion (€10.7 billion).

Lazzat denies Japan a first Royal Ascot winner in thrilling climax
Lazzat's victory rounded off a superb week for owner the Emir of Qatar's Wathnan Racing, a final day double -- both ridden by James Doyle -- taking their tally to five. Lazzat was France's last hope of salvaging something from the week -- indeed their other two runners in the race fared badly, Sajir being withdrawn and the other Topgear losing two of his horse shoes. The winner was still in feisty form post winning as he shied away from someone coming to him with a blanket like a matador and dumped Doyle on the turf. Doyle -- described as "world class and a brilliant guy" by Wathan's racing manager Richard Brown -- dusted himself down as his 26th Royal Ascot winner disappeared into the distance. "I cannot take any credit at all," he said modestly. "Jerome (Reynier the trainer) was very confident, I could tell Satono Reve was coming alright but you won't get a more genuine horse than this." Satono Reve lost little in defeat under Joao Moreira -- known as 'the Magic Man' -- and did better than the previous 10 Japanese runners at the meeting, all of whom had finished outside the first three. "We came in with a lot of confidence but unfortunately bumped into a very good horse. "I thought I had him but he had another gear. "My horse ran really well." 'Best friend' Rebel's Romance is trainer Charlie Appleby's favourite horse and the two-time Breeder's Cup Turf winner endeared himself further when he won the Hardwicke Stakes. Described as an "absolute dude" by jockey William Buick Appleby's last runner of the week delivered the trainer's first win at Royal Ascot since a 1-2 three years ago to the day. "This was the horse we needed with the last roll of the dice, he is a battler. "He is more than our iron horse he has kept the yard afloat this week. "Of course it is not a matter of life and death," said Appleby, who has taken his tally to 16 Royal Ascot winners. "If you look at the bigger picture and beyond racing you have got to take the losses and take positives out of it. "It is the equine Olympics." Appleby's mother Patricia was present and concurred with Buick that Rebel's Romance was a "dude of a horse". She also brought her son perhaps the required good omen. "It has been a very long wait," she said. "Last time I wore this yellow dress was when Charlie won the Melbourne Cup (2018) and I have not worn it since." Buick has had a far better week than Appleby, landing amongst other races the Ascot Gold Cup for the same owners, Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum's Godolphin Operation. "He is a dream horse. Any jockey fortunate to have in his career a horse like this is blessed," said the 36-year-old Norway-born jockey. "We're best friends." Doyle had begun the day with a bang as Humidity emulated his full brother Holloway Boy in 2022 landing the Listed Chesham Stakes for Wathnan Racing. Qatar's joy was Godolphin's despair as hotly fancied favourite Treanmor -- who cost 2million euros ($2.3 million) -- never threatened. A special day for the winners but also for Dean Sutherland, who has worked at Ascot since June 1981, firstly at the golf course then on the gardening team.
