Investigating origin of Uiseong wildfire
Firefighting authorities and the National Forensic Service conduct a joint investigation at the suspected origin of the wildfire in Goesan-ri, Uiseong-gun, North Gyeongsang Province, on Monday.
A fire that broke out around 11:25 a.m. on March 22 there, is believed to have started what became South Korea's worst wildfires in history, claiming 30 lives.
On Sunday, the police booked a suspect for violating the Forest Protection Act for allegedly accidentally starting the fire while tending to a relative's grave. Earlier, they found a lighter near the burial mound. The police plan to conduct a face-to-face interrogation with the suspect once they gather further details from the investigation, including the results of a forensic analysis. (Photo by Yonhap)

Ex-President Yoon attends 7th hearing of insurrection trial
Former President Yoon Suk Yeol attended the seventh hearing of his insurrection trial Monday without responding to questions about separate independent investigations into him and his wife. Yoon arrived at the Seoul Central District Court to be tried on charges of leading an insurrection and abusing his power through his Dec. 3 imposition of martial law. It was his first trial hearing since his successor, President Lee Jae-myung, appointed three independent counsels to investigate charges related to the martial law bid, corruption allegations involving his wife Kim Keon Hee, and his suspected interference in a probe into a Marine's death in 2023. Since their appointments last week, the counsels have been forming their teams and searching for office space. Two witnesses -- an aide to the defense minister and an official of the former martial law command -- have been called to testify later in the day. If convicted of insurrection, Yoon could be sentenced to a maximum penalty of life in prison or death. (Yonhap)

Suspect in murder of 2 brothers, stabbing of 2 others indicted
ANSAN, South Korea, June 12 (Yonhap) -- The suspect in the killing of two brothers and stabbing of two others was indicted Thursday on charges of murder and attempted murder, the prosecution said. Cha Cheol-nam, a 56-year-old Chinese national of Korean ethnicity, is accused of killing the brothers of the same Chinese-Korean background in Siheung, just southwest of Seoul, last month. He is also accused of stabbing a convenience store owner and his landlord in separate incidents, causing them serious injuries. The Ansan branch of the Suwon District Prosecutors Office said Cha was indicted on the murder and attempted murder charges while remaining under arrest. During questioning by investigation agencies, Cha claimed to have committed the crime out of anger after the brothers failed to repay him a loan of 30 million won (US$21,500). He also said the convenience store owner had spoken ill of him, while the landlord had looked down on him. Cha began planning the murders six months beforehand by altering his weapon to make it comfortable for use and getting a prescription for sleeping pills to give to the brothers, according to the prosecution.
