MNS holds bell ringing protest against Nashik Municipal Corporation over neglect of civic services
Nashik: The Nashik unit of the

(MNS) staged a
bell-ringing protest
on Monday at the
Nashik Municipal Corporation
(NMC) headquarters, Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, condemning the administration's failure to address basic civic issues such as poor road conditions and inadequate water supply.
The agitation, which lasted for about two hours, was led by MNS state general secretary Dinkar Patil, who criticized the NMC for ignoring repeated demands to resolve residents' grievances. "We have been demanding the municipal corporation sort out the various civic issues faced by the city residents, but the municipal corporation failed to address the issues. Hence, we resorted to bell-ringing agitations at the NMC headquarters," Patil said.
He emphasized the urgency of addressing these problems, particularly in view of the upcoming
Simhastha Kumbh Mela
. "Urgent decisions need to be taken in terms of essential civic amenities, water management, traffic management, and environmental safety. We have taken a firm stand that the planning of the Kumbh Mela should not be just for that period but should be permanent and of high quality," he added.
Patil also called on the NMC to begin immediate action on cleaning the Godavari, Darna, Nandini, and Valdevi rivers, make CSR-funded projects from 2012-17 accessible to the public, fix pothole-ridden roads, address the water crisis within eight days, and approve pending infrastructure works. He further demanded staff recruitment, better support for sanitation workers, the start of Kumbh Mela preparations, and an investigation into the smart city projects in Nashik.

Meshram is not alone. Vijay aka Pintu Zalke, another former corporator, has also intensified his public outreach. Like others, he has been trying to fill the political void left by the dissolution of the NMC's general body in March 2022 which led to bureaucratic governance without elected representation. With polls likely in the coming months, Zalke and others have begun directly engaging with citizens, addressing grievances, and reviving their grassroots presence. Former BJP city chief Jitendra Kukde, too, has returned to active fieldwork in his former ward. "As I was busy with both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections after being appointed city president, I missed regular interactions with people of my Prabhag," said Kukde, who was later replaced by Dayashankar Tiwari. Now out of party office, Kukde is back on the ground, attempting to rebuild his image and rapport with voters. Several ex-corporators have also reopened their contact offices to directly receive complaints. Former women corporators from opposition camps like Sneha Nikose and Shakshi Raut have become proactive, addressing issues like sewer blockages, irregular garbage collection, low water pressure, and damaged public infrastructure. These efforts come as citizens grow increasingly frustrated with the lukewarm response of the civic officials. With many wards still plagued by basic issues — ranging from faulty street lights and choked drains to uncollected garbage — former corporators are leveraging this discontent to re-establish their political relevance. The surge in activity suggests that while the municipal body remains under administrative control, the unofficial race for the civic body's 151 seats has already begun on the ground.

Patil writes to CM on mining scams, BJP questions timing
Bengaluru/Raichur: Law minister HK Patil has written a detailed letter to chief minister Siddaramaiah expressing deep concern over the govt's failure to act on thousands of illegal mining cases that allegedly led to a loss of Rs 1.5 lakh crore between 2007 and 2011. In a seven-page letter dated June 18, Patil criticised the "administrative apathy" in handling these cases and called for stern action against the culprits and recovery of lost public wealth. He reminded Siddaramaiah of the 320-km foot march to Ballari in 2010 against illegal mining when the Congress was in opposition. Patil, who headed the cabinet sub-committee on illegal mining during Siddaramaiah's previous term (2013–18), noted in the letter that only 7.6% of more than 12,000 registered illegal mining cases have been investigated so far. "In just 2 per cent of these seven per cent, which means in only 0.2 per cent of the total number of cases, verdicts have come and cases have seen a conclusion," he further added. In Raichur, Patil on Saturday said, "I have brought it to the notice of the CM about what has to be done. The letter is written in the interest of the state and its people. The chief minister has seen the letter and has taken the matter seriously." Belagavi: Sugar minister Shivanand Patil said the central govt should lift the restrictions on sugar cane export. He also appealed to govt to prioritise the welfare of sugar cane growers. "Many factories left the pending sugar cane bills to farmers because they were not allowed to export. The factories do not have separate capital to pay the bills," the minister said. "Tur is being grown in a significant amount in our country. However, the central govt allowed its import. Due to this, the price of tur has fallen to Rs 90 per kg. The Centre should think about what should be imported and what should be allowed to be exported. The prices of onions and tomatoes should not fall, and farmers should not throw them on the road. The Centre should think in this regard," he said. Sugar cane was cultivated in about 6 lakh hectares in the state for the past two years, and due to good rainfall, it is expected that another 1 lakh hectares will be added. Factories facing sugar cane shortage will no longer face issues.
