As part of its commitment to addressing environmental challenges and participating in international efforts to raise community awareness of the importance of protecting planet Earth, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) is participating in events to mark World Environment Day, which falls on Thursday, June 5 of each year.
This year's theme is 'Reducing Plastic Pollution'.
On this occasion, the ministry lit up its main building in green, expressing its ongoing commitment to environmental issues and sustainable development, and in line with international initiatives aimed at reducing pollution, particularly pollution caused by single-use plastics.

QC relief mission to address Sudanese refugee crisis in Chad

This year, World Refugee Day carries even deeper humanitarian significance amid escalating global crises, foremost among them, the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan. Neighbouring Chad now hosts over one million Sudanese refugees who have fled waves of violence across conflict-ridden regions, most recently from clashes in the Abu Shouk and Zamzam camps. In a tangible expression of cross-border humanitarian solidarity, Qatar Charity (QC) has launched a relief mission in Chad to respond to the urgent needs of Sudanese refugees living in transit zones and overcrowded camps where basic services are scarce or nonexistent. The field mission included visits to multiple border crossings between Sudan and Chad, as well as to a major refugee settlement in Wadi Sira—one of the key gathering points for newly displaced individuals. This initial intervention aimed to assess the situation on the ground and identify the most pressing needs. In coordination with local authorities, Qatar Charity's team conducted a comprehensive needs assessment, identifying critical gaps in shelter, food, water, and healthcare. Emergency food baskets were distributed to alleviate immediate suffering. The visit exposed harrowing conditions facing tens of thousands of refugees who escaped the conflict with nothing but the will to survive. They now endure extreme shortages of food and clean water, lack access to safe shelter amid soaring summer temperatures, and suffer from inadequate healthcare. Meanwhile, children have been cut off from education, placing their futures at risk. Coordinated response plan This visit marks the beginning of a phased emergency response by Qatar Charity, which aims to provide life-saving assistance in key refugee-hosting areas across Chad. The plan includes the delivery of essential supplies, food, shelter materials, and medical support. On this World Refugee Day, Qatar Charity renews its unwavering commitment to standing with the world's most vulnerable. The plight of Sudanese refugees in Chad calls for a united and coordinated response from all humanitarian actors. This crisis is a stark reminder that solidarity is no longer a choice it is a moral imperative. Building a future that leaves no one behind begins with protecting those who have lost everything. Every refugee carries a story of survival, and their right to life, dignity, and a fresh start must be safeguarded regardless of borders.

Avoid using lights near beaches at night during turtle nesting season: MoECC

DOHA: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has appealed to the people to avoid using lights near the beaches at night during the turtle nesting season. These lights can disorient young turtles and cause them to lose their way to the sea, exposing them to the risks of predation or death, the ministry said in a social media post. MoECC officially launched the 2025 Sea Turtle Nesting Season in April at Fuwairit Beach in the presence of Minister of Environment and Climate Change HE Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie. This initiative came as part of the ministry's ongoing efforts to protect Qatar's wildlife and preserve biodiversity - particularly endangered species such as the hawksbill sea turtle. The national project, now in its third decade and implemented in collaboration with Qatar University, QatarEnergy, and several national entities, has resulted in the successful release of tens of thousands of hatchlings into their natural habitat - significantly contributing to the restoration of Qatar's marine life. This approach aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030, which places environmental sustainability at the heart of national priorities. Hawksbill turtles return annually to Qatar's northern beaches - including Fuwairit, Ras Laffan, Al Ghariyah, and Al Huwailah - as well as several islands such as Umm Tais, Ras Rakan, Shura'awa, and Halul. The nesting season runs from early April to late June, with hatchlings emerging about two months after eggs are laid.

Qatar Charity Eid project brings cheer to people in Sudan, Chad

Tribune News Network Doha With the generous support of donors in Qatar, Qatar Charity's (QC) annual Eid Al Adha initiative in Sudan and Chad, reached the most vulnerable communities through the distribution of Udhiyah. The campaign was part of Qatar Charity's broader seasonal efforts for 2025 (1446 AH) to bring hope and joy to those most in need around the world. In Sudan, the initiative focused on regions affected by conflict and displacement. Working hand in hand with local authorities and humanitarian partners, Qatar Charity distributed meat from 160 Udhiyah to more than 1,600 beneficiaries primarily internally displaced persons, refugees, and impoverished families. Field teams from Qatar Charity visited the distribution points, taking part in the process and witnessing firsthand the impact of the campaign. Joy was evident on the faces of recipients who welcomed the aid with gratitude and warm prayers for the people of Qatar. Local officials praised the charity's transparent and organized approach, which ensures that help reaches those who need it most. Meanwhile in Chad, Qatar Charity implemented the project across several regions including the capital, N'Djamena. The campaign benefited over 17,640 individuals through the distribution of 105,840 kilograms of meat, sourced from 1,776 Udhiyah. Local partners and officials in Chad commended the initiative, noting its deep impact on underserved communities and its role in bringing a sense of dignity and joy during Eid. For many of the beneficiaries, especially those in refugee camps or impoverished neighbourhoods, this year's Eid was unlike any other. The gift of meat, which many families had not tasted for months, turned their Eid into a moment of celebration. One refugee in Chad expressed his gratitude, saying: 'I never expected we'd have meat this Eid. This is a blessing from God, and we thank the people of Qatar for remembering us.' Local leaders described the campaign as a powerful message of solidarity from Qatar, reflecting the values of compassion, generosity, and shared humanity. Through this initiative, Qatar Charity once again affirmed its commitment to supporting vulnerable communities around the world not just with aid, but with hope.
