Johor offers ideal ecosystem for AI and green investments, says exco

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor offers a fully integrated ecosystem with high-performance tech infrastructure, renewable energy solutions, and regulatory clarity, making it an ideal destination for investments in AI, green data centres, fintech, and more.
Johor investment, trade, consumer affairs, and human resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han stated that Medini, is a smart city that has attracted over RM13bil in cumulative investments, including healthcare, education, business services, and smart infrastructure.

'Subnational regions like Johor are more important than ever.
'We are not just passive beneficiaries of policies; we are active participants in driving the growth of our countries and regions,' he said during his closing speech on day one of the forum on Wednesday (June 18).
He said initiatives like the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) illustrate how targeted policies can unlock cross-border synergies in trade, talent, and technology, creating a seamless ecosystem for high-value industries.
By focusing on execution, infrastructure readiness, and investor confidence, Johor demonstrates that growth can be decentralised and that real transformation often happens where industries operate and people live.
Lee noted that forum speakers discussed the need to deepen regional cooperation, emphasising sustainability and the critical role of technology and innovation, particularly AI and digital platforms.
'One key takeaway is that Asia, with over 4.7 billion people, will remain the world's manufacturing hub and is also emerging as its innovative engine.
'In this era of uncertainty, investors and innovators seek environments where rules are transparent, decisions are predictable, and institutions are stable. Johor is ready to offer these,' he added.
The forum is expected to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Thursday (June 19 and has about 800 participants and delegates attending in person and online for discussions and fireside chats.
Themed "Driving Asia's Innovation Hub," the event brings together thought leaders, policymakers, corporate leaders, and investors from across Asia and beyond.

OCBC pledges over RM11bil financing to support Johor-Singapore SEZ

KUALA LUMPUR: OCBC Group has pledged over RM11 billion in financing to businesses in Johor since the beginning of last year, as part of its support for the development of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). The bank expects to extend at least RM3 billion more in financing by year-end to support investments across various sectors. This includes real estate, oil and gas, manufacturing and data centres. OCBC Group chief executive officer Helen Wong said it has a longstanding presence in Johor, with its roots in the state going back over a century. The first OCBC Malaysia branch in Johor was established in 1917, and the bank now operates eight branches in the state, out of a total of 38 nationwide. "Having already committed over RM11 billion in financing to businesses in Johor, we are looking to further catalyse local economic activities and cross-border investments in Johor and the JS-SEZ through at least another RM3 billion in financing by year-end. "We are honoured to have this opportunity to explore with the Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi how we can build on these solid foundations and leverage the full capabilities of the OCBC Group's extensive regional franchise to contribute to the success of the JS-SEZ," she said. Onn Hafiz said OCBC's RM11 billion financing commitment, along with plans to inject at least RM3 billion more by the end of the year, demonstrates strong confidence in Johor's economic trajectory and investment prospects. "We welcome this partnership and look forward to working closely with OCBC to unlock Johor's full potential as Asean's next economic powerhouse," he said.

Khaled: Umno to review Sembrong motion seeking to lift Hishammuddin's suspension, reinstate him in party leadership

BATU PAHAT, June 22 – Umno will consider a motion from its Sembrong division appealing for the suspension of its MP, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, to be lifted and for his reinstatement into the party's leadership. Umno Vice-President Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin was quoted saying the motion is among 191 submitted by divisions nationwide and will be reviewed by party headquarters in accordance with the party's constitution. 'Now that there's a motion, we will deliberate. Whether or not the individual involved has submitted an appeal is not the main issue,' Khaled was reported saying by Utusan Malaysia. 'We will send it to headquarters for review and consideration.' Yesterday, Johor Umno chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi assured members that he would back the motion. Sembrong Umno reportedly cited Hishammuddin's decades-long commitment to the constituency and continued loyalty to Umno as grounds for the appeal. Division chief Datuk Abdul Ghani Abdul Rashid said this was the second year in a row the division had submitted such a motion. In January 2023, Umno Supeme Council decided to internally purge itself of critics — resulting in 44 party members being exiled and four members being given a suspension. Sembrong MP Hishammuddin was suspended for six years, reportedly for being the main driver behind the Barisan Nasional MPs signing statutory declarations backing Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister. Among the 44 sacked were former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin and former Selangor Tan Sri Noh Omar, while former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan was also given a six-year suspension.

Let state govts implement federal projects, Putrajaya told

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi has called on the federal government to entrust state governments with implementing federal development projects meant for the people. Onn Hafiz said 222 projects supposed to be implemented in Johor between 2016 and 2024 have got off the ground. He suggested that the federal government empower state governments to carry out the projects, starting with Johor 'as a pilot project'. He said some of the stalled projects included hospitals, health clinics, roads and mosques, for which the total cost amounted to RM10 billion, Berita Harian reported. 'And when we enquire about it in meetings, they tell us, 'don't worry, we will check with the relevant ministries and approve'. These are projects that are meant for the 'rakyat', but till today, work has not started on any of them,' he was quoted as saying. He said it was time for the federal government to entrust the state governments with the task of implementing these projects. Onn Hafiz, who is Johor Umno chief, said his party would bear the brunt when these projects are not realised.
