Cable theft in the east costs metro over R4m
Cable theft and electricity losses are spiralling out of control in the suburbs east of Pretoria, costing the metro millions.
The city spent nearly R4.9-million on repairs and maintenance in the past financial year due to cable and electricity theft, a heavy financial toll to its already strained budget.
These incidents have led to frequent power outages, disrupting daily life and business operations.
Residents also voiced concerns over the city's response, adding, 'We are paying rates and taxes, yet it feels like no one is protecting the infrastructure. We need stronger action and quicker response times.'
According to city spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, the direct repair costs amounted to R4 889 985,70, not including additional losses due to service disruptions and secondary infrastructure damage.
'These ongoing incidents not only cost the city millions, but also jeopardise essential services and public safety,' said Mashigo.
'The damage goes beyond the cables themselves – entire communities are affected when the power goes out.'
Mashigo said cable theft and vandalism in the east were the worst in Erasmuskloof, Armscor, Rietvlei Nature Reserve, Rietvlei Water Works, Woodlands Mall, Woodlands Lifestyle Estate, Faerie Glen (Koedoeberg), Mooikloof, Moreleta Park and surrounding suburbs.
He said the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) and private security companies were surveilling the hotspots, conducting regular patrols in identified high-risk zones.
Mashigo confirmed that supply chain management is still processing the tender for enhanced infrastructure security.
'In the interim, the TMPD is working closely with SAPS and private security partners to secure vulnerable infrastructure.'
He said cable theft and electricity infrastructure vandalism reduce the reliability and longevity of the electricity infrastructure.
MMC for Finance Eugene Modise said the metro has allocated more than R565-million to the installation of CCTV cameras, the recruitment of 200 more metro police officers from January, and the deployment of security personnel to protect its assets, including electricity infrastructure.
'Tshwane is woefully under-protected and we are pursuing a consolidated asset protection strategy that includes both physical security and advanced technological solutions,' said Modise.
He added that the metro plans to incorporate modern technology, such as motion detectors and smart surveillance tools, to support and strengthen the efforts of ground security teams.

Metro to address leasing issues to combat hijacking of buildings Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya says the metro is aware of its current leasing challenges following several businesses being closed in a recent by-law operation. On June 17, Moya, accompanied by her Mayoral Committee, the TMPD and supporting partners as well as departments, carried out a by-law operation focused on hijacked buildings in Danville, west of Pretoria. A recurring theme throughout the operation was the holes within the metro's leasing systems, leading to confusion, fraud and mismanagement. 'We will continue to reclaim hijacked city properties. We are aware that the city's leasing system has not worked to benefit the municipality's income-generating capacity, and we are determined to fix this,' Moya said. During the operation, an illegal early childhood development (ECD) centre, operating for 22 years from a city-owned property without a lease, was closed. Across the road was a business park, also city-owned, but none of the businesses had valid leases with the metro. 'Danville, like many areas in the city, has seen residents terrorised by crime, drugs and all manner of lawlessness emanating from properties that are owned by the city or by private entities. The other businesses closed were operating in a privately managed building. These included a gambling business, a butchery that was found selling expired meat and a U-Save operating without a licence,' Moya said. A summary of the operation's results includes: – 8 business premises inspected – 2 Section 56 notices issued for contravention of the Business Act – 4 Section 56 notices issued for contravention of the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectant Act – 1 Contravention notice issued for the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectant Act – 3 Premises found with an illegal electricity connection – 1 Premise found with an illegal water connection – 2 arrests were made for illegal immigration and possession of stolen goods – 3 vehicles impounded – 1 gambling business entered forcefully – 5 businesses closed. KZN premier summoned to appear before portfolio committee
KZN Premier Thami Ntuli has been summoned to appear before the Portfolio Committee on Office of the Premier, Community Safety and Liaison to give clarity on allegations that the youth manager in his office threatened to physically harm the former director general, Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize. Portfolio Committee chair Mbali Frazer alleges that Mkhize's crime was to refuse to sign off an appointment letter related to the R100-million Youth Fund. ALSO READ: Embattled KZN director-general resigns 'We believe it will be an abdication of our responsibility not to allow the premier of the province to address these serious allegations in an appropriate platform,' said Frazer. 'We have written a letter to him requesting him to appear before the committee. As the committee responsible for playing an oversight role over the executive, we believe such allegations warrant our attention. 'The Office of the Premier has a critical role to play in terms of the co-ordination of the work of provincial government departments on service delivery. The destabilisation of the Office of the Premier in any form, including threats to physically harm a senior female civil servant, should be viewed in a serious light by all leaders of society across all political affiliations,' she said. The ANC Youth League strongly condemns the actions of Premier Thami Ntuli for allegedly shielding perpetrators of violence, particularly gender-based violence (GBV), within his administration. ANCYL KZN Provincial Secretary Lulama Mabude said they are appalled by these allegations. 'We fully support the Youth Fund initiative established by the former ANC premier, Numusa Dube-Ncube, to empower young people to thrive in business and contribute meaningfully to the economy. 'However, we categorically reject the misuse of these funds to benefit non-compliant applicants or those selected based on political affiliation. 'We demand an immediate halt to this process and call for a transparent, merit-based review to ensure funds serve their intended purpose of uplifting KZN's youth,' said Mabude. She added that the youth manager in question is alleged to have pressured Mkhize to approve these funds to benefit his political allies and associates, undermining the integrity of the Youth Fund. 'We will not tolerate government officials perpetuating GBV and escaping accountability. 'South African women and youth live in constant fear due to harassment and abuse, and the premier's office has failed to address these serious allegations,' said Mabude.
