What to know about the Fraser tornado and why it moved so fast
Wednesday's tornado in Macomb County, Michigan, resulted in a tornado warning, but it was in a location not covered by an existing National Weather Service tornado watch.
The CBS Detroit NEXT Weather team has seen spin-up tornadoes in Michigan in the past, and said that's what happened Wednesday.

"Not uncommon, but unpleasant, and very, very fast," said CBS News Detroit chief meteorologist Ahmad Bajjey about spin-ups.
As the tornado threat moved into the Great Lakes region Wednesday, the National Weather Service placed some counties in Southwest Michigan under a tornado watch. The next watch announcement issued in Michigan was for severe thunderstorms.
But before the Metro Detroit area officially was placed in that severe thunderstorm watch, a tornado warning was issued for part of Macomb County at 1:12 p.m. While the National Weather Service said in its notice that the warning was "radar indicated," videos shared by witnesses helped confirm that indeed a tornado had formed.
It was Michigan's 29th tornado of the year.
This particular funnel wasn't associated with the main line of storms that was still yet to arrive in Southeast Michigan, Bajjey said.
"What happened is a warm front was lifting north and baking us," he said. "In an environment like yesterday, any individual cells that kick off can turn tornadic along a warm front very quickly. It was a risk, and ended up happening."
The National Weather Service in Detroit is working on surveys to determine how strong the tornado was and confirm its path.
In another example from Southeast Michigan, a spin-up tornado later rated at an EF-1 struck in Livonia on June 5, 2024. A 3-year-old boy was killed and his mother critically injured when a tree fell on their home from that storm.
As CBS Detroit meteorologist Karen Carter explained at the time, "This particular tornado was a spin-up tornado. It is difficult to forecast and to warn due to its sudden spin-up feature. Most tornadoes form within supercells, where one can see the development of a possible tornado and give better warning. This particular spin-up tornado was shown for only one swipe of the radar."

Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz and Seattle Mariners reliever Trent Thornton got sick Saturday while playing in the extreme heat that covered much of the United States. Dexter Kelley moved from second base to home plate. Whitson was treated in the Mariners' dugout. 'He came in, same kind of thing. Just was not feeling well,' Wilson said. 'Threw up a few times in the dugout and then they came and took care of him from there. The heat was a real thing today, for sure.' Whitson was dealing with some dehydration, but a Major League Baseball spokesman said he was doing better Saturday night and had been cleared to work third base for the series finale. A Wrigley Field staffer had a heat-related medical issue right after Saturday's game, according to a spokesman for the Cubs. He was tended to by medical personnel and walked off the field on his own. The Cubs set up cooling and misting stations throughout Wrigley to help fans with the heat on Saturday, along with additional emergency personnel. Tracking extreme heat through Monday
The National Weather Service has extended the heat advisory through Monday for nearly all of Missouri and northeastern Kansas. Heat indices are expected to surpass the 100s on Sunday and Monday. With the heat advisory continuing through Saturday evening, a break in the heat is not expected until midweek. Overnight temperatures will dip only into the upper 70s and low 80s, making for a very warm evening. Over the past few hours, we have experienced very gusty conditions, with winds reaching up to 25-30 mph. These strong southerly winds will continue overnight, and gusts could climb into the 30s. These winds will help keep temperatures warm into Sunday morning. Sunday will be similar to today, with temperatures and heat indices climbing quickly. Highs are expected to reach the upper 90s, with the heat index nearing 105. Winds will remain gusty, with gusts near 30-35 mph. We will continue to remain dry on Sunday, with plenty of sunshine to help warm temperatures. Monday will mark the start of a more active weather pattern. A marginal risk (level 1 of 5). A low-pressure system in Kansas is expected to bring rain and thunderstorms along a frontal boundary late Monday night into Tuesday morning. Behind the Tuesday system, rain and storm chances will likely linger throughout most of the week, with temperatures remaining in the 90s.
