Shah Rukh Khan started on TV with Fauji and Circus, before going on to becoming a huge movie star.
Shah Rukh Khan, before becoming one of Bollywood's biggest stars, began his career on television with popular shows like Fauji, Dil Dariya, Doosra Keval, Circus, and Idiot. In Circus, directed by Aziz Mirza and Kundan Shah, he worked alongside future stars like Ashutosh Gowariker, Makrand Deshpande, Renuka Shahane, and Sameer Khakhar. Reflecting on those early days, Renuka Shahane recently shared a memory of Shah Rukh giving her a valuable piece of advice, which Ashutosh Gowariker later helped her apply while they were working together on the show.
In a chat with Filmfare, Renuka Shahane talked about her time on the show Circus. She said she was scared of heights, just like her character Maria, which made some scenes hard to do. She recalled, 'My character, Maria, had a fear of heights, and so did I in real life. Hence, I was really scared while doing some of my scenes, particularly the ones featuring me getting on the trapeze. We all belong to the same age group, and, at that time, Shah Rukh wasn't a film star. He was already a television star, though. So, after pack-up, we all used to discuss things."
She went on to add, 'I was really scared, especially because I had to shoot with Kundan. Then, Shah Rukh came up to me and said, 'Listen, you are an actor. If the director tells you this is a well and asks you to jump, you jump. You shouldn't think about your fear of heights and all.' He actually works like that. His attitude toward work is like that. I've seen him work for 36 hours straight. We had two units on Circus — one managed by Kundan and the other by Aziz — and SRK was in practically every frame of the show. So, I have seen him shooting for 36 hours at a stretch. Yet, not a single wrinkle appeared on his face. He never complained about anything either."
Renuka Shahane also shared a memory of Ashutosh Gowariker jokingly telling her that if a director asks her to jump, she should reply, 'First, you jump and show me." But the professionalism SRK was talking about was, don't overthink or question these things. It's the director's vision, and as an actor, you have to fulfill it. His words got me thinking. One can be mollycoddling of oneself, and we need to stretch ourselves."

Renuka Shahane reacts to the 8hrs shift debate amidst Deepika Padukone's exit from 'Spirit', says, 'It's a matter of choice'

Renuka Shahane known for 'Hum Aapke Hai Koun..' and directing films like 'Tribhanga', Marathi film 'Rita', has now shared her thoughts on the 8-hour shift debate which has started post Deepika Padukone 's exit from 'Spirit'. It was being reported that Deepika had demanded for an eight-hour shift and not more than that, now that she's a new mom to baby Dua. This started a discussion within the industry. Renuka Shahane expressed her opinions on 8-hour shifts for actors during this time, stating that it is a personal decision. She said, although it is a personal preference, she believes that 8-hour shifts shouldn't be necessary because many mothers may need to work 18 hours. In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, the actress shared, 'I don't want to make a general statement on it because I feel that there are even some male actors who would like to minimize hours, not just female actors. A lot of them have come out and said that they want to spend time with their families. In this context, it's a difficult thing to say, because it is a matter of individual choice." The 58-year-old actress, who is a mother of two, said she knows a lot of working women who bring their kids along to work 18-hour shifts on daily soap opera sets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo She thinks it's their decision, and producers have the final say if they agree. Since some women may need or prefer to work those long hours, there shouldn't be any pressure. 'I know of a lot of working mothers who are going to work in daily soaps for 18-hour shifts, and they manage their child by taking them to the set, and kind of raising them practically on the set. It is a choice that they have made and who am I to say anything about that? If the producer accepts that, it's their prerogative. There should not be a compulsion as there might be mothers who want or need to work for 18 hours. It's a very individual thing," she said. The 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun' star also emphasised on the importance of mutual understanding between the creators and actors. 'Whenever you decide to sign on the dotted line, that has to be something mutual. And that sense of respect has to be there because if there is no respect, you're not going to be able to work with each other at all," she said. On the work front, Renuka Shahane was last seen in Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar's Marathi film 'Devmanus' co-starring Mahesh Manjrekar, which released in theatres in April this year.

‘Ranbir Kapoor dresses very classy': Ibrahim Ali Khan names RK as Bollywood's most fashionable star

Jun 21, 2025 04:05 PM IST Even before he began his career as an actor, Saif Ali Khan's son Ibrahim Ali Khan was already a heartthrob across social media. The credit goes to his drop-dead good looks, uncanny resemblance to Saif in his younger days, hilarious interactions with the paparazzi and his dressing sense — stylish and not over the top. After his debut film Nadaaniyan released, Ibrahim and his co-star Khushi Kapoor became targets for online trolling. However, he recently redeemed himself when he stepped out looking dapper in a suit with Rasha Thadani at an event, once again winning hearts with his style. But who does Ibrahim find stylish in Bollywood? Ranbir Kapoor and Ibrahim Ali Khan In a recent chat with Filmfare, Ibrahim Ali Khan named Ranbir Kapoor as the most fashionable Bollywood star. When asked who has the best fashion sense in the industry, the star kid replied, 'I would say it is Ranbir Kapoor. He dresses very classy.' Ibrahim went on to describe his top three favourite looks of Ranbir over the years. Ibrahim shared, 'He wears jeans with the Chelsea boots. He pairs it with a t-shirt that is not too slim and not too tight. And then adds a nice, either a blanket-ish kind of a jacket or like a coat. It's a classic look that Ranbir Kapoor smashes. He smashes that look. Looks cool and nice.' While Ibrahim is a fan of Ranbir's style, RK's actor wife Alia Bhatt is 'obsessed' with Iggy and has called him the cutest person she knows on Karan Johar's chat show. When Alia graced KJo's chat show with Ranveer Singh, much before Ibrahim's Bollywood debut, she revealed Iggy's sweet message to her after he watched Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022). Lauding Alia's 'phenomenal' performance in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, Ibrahim had claimed that she mould herself into a character like water taking the shape of its container. For the uninitiated, Ibrahim was an assistant director on Alia and Ranveer's 2023 film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. On the film front, Ibrahim will next be seen in KJo's Sarzameen with Kajol.

NDTV Exclusive: Renuka Shahane Recalls Auditioning For Surabhi - "It Was A Disaster"

New Delhi: Before Surabhi became a household name and Renuka Shahane a familiar face in living rooms across India, her journey to the iconic show began with what she calls a "disaster." In an interview with NDTV, the actor recalled how she ended up auditioning for the cultural magazine show after returning from the shoot of Circus, a series where she worked with Shah Rukh Khan early in both their careers. Renuka revealed that her Surabhi audition was far from perfect. In fact, she laughed through most of it. "I forgot the lines. I kept laughing at myself because I couldn't remember," she said. The script she was given was a long passage about the Brihadeshwar temple, and while she thought she had memorised it, she blanked out on camera. "It was a disaster," she admitted. At that point, Renuka was convinced she wouldn't land the role. But show creator and producer Geeta Doctor saw something in her that went beyond words. "Geeta loved my smile," she said, adding that it turned out to be the deciding factor. Her warm and cheerful presence was seen as the perfect counterpoint to co-anchor Siddharth Kak's serious and scholarly tone. That small, spontaneous moment changed everything. Renuka Shahane was cast, and Surabhi went on to become one of Doordarshan's most cherished shows of the 1990s, remembered fondly by an entire generation.
