Gold rates today ₹2800 away from record high. Is this the right time to buy gold?

Mint10-05-2025

Gold rate today: Following the economic uncertainty buzz after the steady US Fed rates, gold prices witnessed strong buying last week. After losing for two successive weeks, MCX gold rates surged over 4%, whereas spot gold prices surged 2.65% last week. According to market experts, this disparity is primarily attributed to the Indian National Rupee's (INR's) depreciation of over 1%, amplified the gold price rally in the domestic market. MCX gold rates finished at ₹ 96,535 per 10 gm on Friday, logging a weekly gain of ₹ 3,835 per 10 gm against the previous week's close of ₹ 92,700. While finishing at ₹ 96,535 levels, MCX gold rate today is around ₹ 2800 away from the record high of ₹ 99,358 per 10 gm.
Highlighting the reasons that are fueling gold rates today, Sugandha Sachdeva, Founder of SS WealthStreet said, "The US Fed's decision to maintain interest rates at 4.5% at its recent policy meeting reflects ongoing economic uncertainties, owing to the impact of tariffs on the US economy, which boosted gold's appeal as a safe-haven asset. Similarly, the Bank of England's rate cut of 25bps to 4.25% has further supported gold prices."
Pointing towards the persisting safe-haven demand for gold, Sugandha Sachdeva of SS WealthStreet said, "Apart from these key policy meetings during the week, overall tariff uncertainty still looms as the US announced tariffs on foreign-produced movies and threatened to impose tariffs on the pharma sector, heightening market volatility and increasing demand for gold. Additionally, rising India-Pakistan tensions contributed to gold's safe-haven demand, particularly in the domestic market. Any major depreciation in the Indian rupee due to these escalating geopolitical risks could lead to additional gains in the domestic markets."
Pointing towards appreciation in the Indian rupee after dip in the US dollar rates, Jigar Trivedi, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities, said, "The US dollar index edged lower to around 100 on Friday, after two straight sessions of gains, as traders looked ahead to US-China trade talks scheduled for the weekend. President Trump expressed optimism and expects the negotiations to yield tangible progress. Meanwhile, the newly announced US-UK trade deal provided some relief to investors hoping for a de-escalation in global trade tensions."
Jateen Trivedi, VP Research — Commodity & Currency at LKP Securities, said, "Gold price today is oscillating between ₹ 95,750 and ₹ 96,750 on the MCX, largely influenced by sharp movements in the Indian rupee. On the global front, Comex gold price eased as market sentiment turned optimistic following trade-related announcements between the US and Europe, along with the possibility of renewed trade talks between the US and China."
On triggers that may dominate gold rates in the near-term, Jigar Trivedi of Reliance Securities said, "Market attention will continue on US trade negotiations, followed by key data including the inflation rate, retail sales, and speeches from Federal Reserve officials, notably Chairman Jerome Powell."
"Upcoming US-China trade talks scheduled for the weekend introduce uncertainty. A positive outcome may ease market fears, potentially capping gold's gains. At the same time, if talks collapse, that could trigger a rally in gold prices," said Sugandha, adding, "For the next week, upcoming US economic data like US CPI, PPI, and Eurozone GDP could impact global market sentiment and also provide cues for the precious metal."
Speaking on the gold price outlook in the near term, Sugandha Sachdeva said, "Apart from these key policy meetings during the week, overall tariff uncertainty still looms as the US announced tariffs on foreign-produced movies and threatened to impose tariffs on the pharma sector, heightening market volatility and increasing demand for gold. Additionally, rising India-Pakistan tensions contributed to gold's safe-haven demand, particularly in the domestic market. Any major depreciation in the Indian rupee due to these escalating geopolitical risks could lead to additional gains in the domestic markets."
Expecting volatility in gold prices, Jateen Trivedi of LKP Securities said, "While trade optimism is exerting pressure on gold, ongoing border tensions and shifting geopolitical narratives continue to lend support. In the near term, gold price will likely remain range-bound between ₹ 94,500 and ₹ 97,500, with heightened volatility expected as risk sentiment continues to fluctuate."
Sharing the essential pivots regarding MCX gold rates today, Sugandha Sachdeva of SS WealthStreet said, 'Technical set-up indicates that gold prices are taking support at the ₹ 94,500 and ₹ 92,000 per 10 gm level, while key hurdle for gold is seen at the ₹ 97,500 per 10 gm mark. A breach of the same shall take the prices to ₹ 98,780 per 10 gm mark and could even test previous record high levels of ₹ 99,358 per 10 gm. On the international front, gold prices are finding strong support at the $3,280 per ounce mark. If prices continue to trade above this level, we may see the precious metal reach the $3,380 to $3,420 levels.'
According to the information available on the India Bullions Association (IBA), here is the list of gold rates today in Delhi, Mumbai, and other Indian metro cities:
Gold rates in Delhi — ₹ 96,540/10 gm;
Gold rates in Mumbai — ₹ 96,710/10 gm;
Gold rates in Bengaluru — ₹ 96,780/10 gm;

Apple's China supply chain remains strong despite focus on India, SE Asia

China still enjoys dominance in Apple's key supply chain segments, even as the global tech giant's share of electronics manufacturing in the country has dropped from around 70 per cent to 50 per cent over the last seven years amid increasing focus on India and Southeast Asia, a report by a US-based public policy think-tank American Enterprise Institute (AEI) said. According to the report, key supply chain segments, such as printed circuit boards, printing and packaging, molded and mechanical components, and especially precision manufacturing remain predominantly in China, leaving scope for policymakers in countries like India to focus on attracting investment from its suppliers in such manufacturing capabilities. Interestingly, despite this dominance, Chinese-owned firms generally only play a role in lower-value segments of the supply chain. Many of the higher-value components— even those made in China— are produced in factories owned by Japanese, Taiwanese, or US firms, the report said. It indicated that the monopoly of China in electronics manufacturing for Apple is declining over the years. The assembly of all components into a device— the final step in the production process— is referred to as electronics manufacturing or assembly. 'Beginning in 2018, Apple began to shift its electronics manufacturing footprint, presumably driven by the 2018 US tariffs on China. Before 2018, around 60–70 per cent of electronics manufacturing locations were in China, including nearly all final assembly of key devices like iPhones. Today, by contrast, around 50 per cent of Apple facilities are in China, with increased factory share in India and Southeast Asia,' the report said. Of the 17 companies conducting electronics manufacturing in Apple's supply chain, only two are Chinese. Of the 34 electronics manufacturing facilities reported in China, only three are operated by Chinese firms. The report suggests that policymakers in India and countries in Southeast Asia seeking to attract investment and upgrade their manufacturing capabilities have substantial scope to continue attracting suppliers of companies like Apple, in not only basic assembly, but also some of the other component categories. 'The fact that many of these China-based factories are owned by foreign firms facilitates potential supply chain shifts. Moreover, as western electronics firms face higher tariffs, they are looking for more diversified production locations,' it said. The report is authored by Chris Miller, a non-resident senior fellow at the AEI, and Vishnu Venugopalan, a fellow at Harvard University and an Indian Administrative Service officer. It added that the assembly process for devices like phones often only cost around $10, a tiny fraction of its price. Hence, if tariffs lead to a shift in electronics manufacturing, shifting final assembly from China to a different country — without any other changes in its supply chain – will have minimal impact. Interestingly, the US major has diversified the battery ecosystem, which was solely dependent on China and South Korea till 2018, to multiple other countries. 'Today, however, it procures battery components from five different regions, including India and Southeast Asia. While over half of Apple's battery component sourcing locations remain in China, more than 40 per cent of locations are now outside China, representing a significant shift in Apple's production footprint. Notably, the concentration of China-based manufacturing facilities is greater than the share of Chinese firms. As of 2023, there were firms headquartered in Taiwan, South Korea, and Germany in Apple's battery supply chain—more non-Chinese firms (five) than Chinese (four)," it stated. The connectors and cables category involve some low-end products and some that require more high-end, specialty chemicals. 'The enduring position of Japan-based manufacturing in this category illustrates the higher-end manufacturing involved in certain components. Other segments, however, have seen a substantial shift from China to India and the 'other' category, mostly Southeast Asian countries,' it added. Of the nine companies producing products in this category, only one is Chinese. Other firms in this category with China-based manufacturing are American, Taiwanese, or Japanese — companies like Amphenol (US), Japan Aviation Electronics Industry (Japan), Furukawa Electric (Japan), and Hirose Electric (Japan).

Bad news for Pakistan, China as India not waiting for Russian SU-57 or US F-35 fighter jets, IAF making its own fighter planes more dangerous...

An image of British F-35B fighter jet used for Representational purpose Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme: In a significant achievement for India's defence sector, media reports have it that the Indian government is currently not in any formal talks to purchase advanced fighter aircraft like the Russian Su-57E or the American F-35. Instead, it is relying on indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Here are all the details you need to know about India's very own Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), which is being called India's answer to fifth-generation air power. India's Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme In a big step towards 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' in Defence sector, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently approved the Execution Model for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. Readers should note that the AMCA clearance marks a critical step towards realising India's goal of joining an elite club of nations in designing and producing its own fleet of next-generation combat aircraft. The project will be helmed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), said the Defence Ministry in a press release. 'Both private and public sector entities would do bidding for the project, either independently or as a joint venture or as consortia. The entity/bidder should be an Indian company compliant with the laws and regulations of the country,' said the MoD statement. India's answer to fifth-generation air power The AMCA, widely seen as India's answer to fifth-generation air power, will give a major boost to achieving 'atmanirbharata' in the defence sector and will become a hallmark of India's growing defence capabilities. Being the fifth-generation stealth multirole fighter equipped with cutting-edge technology, it will be suited for all-weather operation. Designed with low radar cross-section and supercruise capability, the AMCA is seen as the successor to the frontline Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets. Some reports suggest that its mass production is likely to commence by 2035. (With inputs from agencies)

Yield on AAA-rated PSU bonds breaches 7% as long-term rates firm up

Yields on 10-year AAA-rated public sector undertaking (PSU) bonds in India's corporate bond primary market exceeded the 7 per cent threshold on Monday, after a gap of three months, as long-term rates continue to rise. Notably, REC Limited raised ₹2,865 crore through 10-year bonds at a coupon rate of 7.06 per cent. Additionally, the company secured ₹4,000 crore via 2-year bonds at a 6.60 per cent coupon rate. 'REC's 10-year issuance today saw a cut-off of 7.06 per cent confirming the firming yield trend. Despite the upward movement, limited fresh supply of 10-year bonds and sustained investor demand in REC bond have helped keep the coupon levels orderly,' said Venkatakrishnan Srinivasan, founder and managing partner of Rockfort Fincap LLP. Meanwhile, the yield on short term bonds -- particularly up to the 5-year segment -- have been witnessing strong demand post monetary policy review outcome earlier this month. These instruments are typically bought for interest income rather than capital gains. A combination of monetary policy easing, abundant liquidity infusion in the system, and Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) cut by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the recent monetary policy review weighed on the short term bond yields, said dealers. 'There is demand for short term bonds after the policy, but the rates on papers of tenure 10 year and above are rising, and they are expected to harden further. The 10-year government bond yield touched 6.40 per cent today (Monday), which eventually reflects in the corporate bond primary market,' said a dealer at a state-owned bank. The yield spread between 3-year government bond and benchmark 10-year bond has increased by more than three-fold to 48 basis points, against 15 bps at the start of the financial year, whereas, in the current calendar year the yield spread has widened by twelve times. Since January, the RBI has injected ₹9.5 trillion of durable liquidity into the banking system. This infusion helped shift liquidity conditions from a sustained deficit since mid-December to a surplus by end of March. The transition was reflected in the muted demand for daily VRR auctions and elevated SDF balances, which averaged ₹2.0 trillion during April–May. Of the total liquidity injection, ₹5.2 trillion came through open market purchases (including secondary market purchases), while long term VRR auctions and USD/INR buy-sell swaps added ₹2.1 trillion and ₹2.2 trillion, respectively. The net liquidity in the banking system was in a surplus of ₹2.41 trillion as of Sunday, latest data by the RBI showed. The domestic rate setting panel cut the banks' cash reserve ratio (CRR) by 100 basis points to 3 per cent of their net demand and time liabilities in four tranches starting September. The reduction in CRR is expected to infuse ₹2.5 trillion of primary liquidity in the banking system by the end of November.
