Football Manager 25 cancelled after two delays
The latest update in the popular Football Manager series has been cancelled, its makers have announced.Fans of the long-running video game began to speculate about its fate when an update due to be unveiled late last month did not arrive. In a blog post, developer Sports Interactive told players it had made the "difficult decision" to cancel the 2025 edition as it was "too far away from the standards you deserve".It said it would now shift focus to the 2026 version of the game and fans who had preordered the cancelled release could obtain a refund.
Football Manager, first launched in 2004, allows fans to step into the shoes of a gaffer and guide a chosen team through a season.Sports Interactive had promised a range of upgrades to the game's visuals and interface in the next edition, and also introduced women's teams for the first time. The developer previously told BBC Newsbeat it had to build a new stats database and record new motion-capture sequences for female players. It also announced it had scaled back its international management mode and removed or paused work on some other features seen in previous games.
Sports Interactive said it was unwilling to push the game back beyond March "as it would be too late in the football season" to do so.The company apologised to fans and said it could not announce the delay sooner due to financial regulations and obligations to its shareholders."Every effort is now focused on ensuring that our next release achieves our goal and hits the quality level we all expect. "We will update you on how we are progressing with that as soon as we are able to do so."

Former Championship manager, 44, now working at Bristol Airport as picture of him in uniform goes viral
A FORMER Championship manager has swapped wingers for wings - by taking a job at Bristol Airport. And fans could barely believe their eyes as he opted for a high-viz instead of a high line. 2 Ex-Swindon and Notts County chief Luke Williams was Swansea boss from January 2024 until his sacking in February 2025. The London-born gaffer, 44, was placed on gardening leave. But despite no doubt receiving a pay-off from the Welsh club when axed four months ago, he was keen to do something worthwhile during his time out of the game. So much so that as he awaits a new stint in a dugout, kind-hearted Williams has undertaken a gig helping disabled and limited-mobility passengers around the Bristol Airport terminal, as reported by The Athletic. He started the job two weeks ago. And it did not take long for a photo of him at his new workplace to go viral. The snap showed humble Williams wearing his yellow reflective vest uniform and lanyard coming out of the lift in Bristol. An X user wrote: "Luke Williams gone from managing the Swans to working in Bristol Airport, someone check VAR." One replied: "He's just doing this because he's bored, he genuinely doesn't care about others' opinions and you have to respect it." Another commented: "Fair play to the guy." Former Premier League manager is told 'f--- you' by his own player before he shushes him in furious Club World Cup row A third joked: "Managing in the top flight." A fourth added: "Cardiff City fan here with nothing but respect for this. Call me woke if you want. (*best believe I'll turn up in full bluebirds kit when I fly out next week)" And a final person typed: "Clearly has a massive work ethic. Good luck to him!" Williams told The Guardian in 2024 that he places a strong emphasis on commitment and dedication, declaring: "In my opinion, motivation in life is everything." He also revealed how he loaded lorries for BHS and drove minibuses to and from nightclubs and airports to fund his early coaching career. In those days, he collected £1.50 for every player who attended his sessions. Williams also applied for an electrician course when he left his coaching role with Swansea under Russell Martin in 2022.

Chris Wilder sacked as Sheffield United manager after Championship play-off final failure
Chris Wilder has been sacked as Sheffield United boss close to a month on from losing the Championship play-off final to Sunderland. Failing to guide the Blades back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, Wilder's second stint at Bramall Lane ends after 18 months, having taken over midway through their relegation-doomed 2023/24 campaign. The Independent understands his dismissal comes following a disagreement over recruitment plans and other issues. Wilder spent five years at the club between 2016 and 2021, where he led Sheffield United from League One to the Premier League and even to the brink of Europe, finishing five points off the Europa League places in their first season up. He took his total tally of games managed at the club to 305 during his second spell in charge in the Steel City, rejoining the Blades after stints at Middlesbrough and Watford. The 57-year-old has now been let go three years before the expected expiry of his contract in 2028. Sheffield United were part of three-horse race for automatic promotion from the Championship last term, but were pipped to the top two by Leeds United and Burnley, who both finished the campaign on 100 points. The Blades, meanwhile, ended the normal season on a tally of 92, leaving them a sizeable 16 points ahead of fourth-place Sunderland as they headed into the ever-precarious play-offs. After dispatching Bristol City over two semi-final legs by an aggregate score of 6-0, they set up a Wembley showdown with the Black Cats, confident that they could emerge victorious in football's richest game. But after taking the lead in a dominant first-half, they failed to make chances count and would succumb to a dramatic comeback from Sunderland, with Tom Watson firing in a 95th-minute winner to send Regis Le Bris's side back to the top flight for the first time since 2017. It leaves Sheffield United resigned to another year in the Championship, where they will be expected to join recently-relegated Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton in the race for promotion.

Wayne Rooney drops major hint over football management future after Man United legend's disaster spells with Birmingham and Plymouth
Wayne Rooney has dropped a major hint over his future as a football manager on the back of his disastrous stints at Birmingham and Plymouth. The Manchester United icon has led four sides since his retirement in 2021, but has struggled to make any of his spells work, and remains without a club since leaving his last role. Rooney, 39, left Plymouth after just 25 games in charge with the club bottom of the Championship on New Year's Eve. He won just five of his matches, but departed despite being a popular figure at the club. Before that, he had worked at Birmingham under minority investor Tom Brady, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal with the then-Championship club. They were sixth at the time, and was sacked less than three months into the role with his team 20th in the table. Both Birmingham and Plymouth were relegated in the year Rooney led them. He also had stints at DC United in the United States and Derby County, but has played a part in relegations at all three of the English clubs he has coached. Now, the former England captain has given an update on his future after stunning back on the field at Old Trafford in Soccer Aid at the weekend. The Manchester United legend has since returned to punditry duty with Amazon Prime Video Speaking to talkSPORT, Rooney said: 'Obviously just doing some TV work at the minute, so that's what I'm doing. 'I'm enjoying it. So, that's where I'll be.' Since leaving Plymouth, he has gone back into punditry, working with Amazon Prime Video following brief stints at the like of Sky Sports and TNT Sports. Rooney was lauded after opening the scoring in front of the Stretford End at Old Trafford in Soccer Aid, before ex-Lionesses star Toni Duggan doubled the home side's lead. Jermain Defoe bagged a brace for England after the break but the second half belonged to pantomime villain Carlos Tevez. The Tevez show - which saw the former Red Devil, who swapped Manchester red for blue and Manchester City, score four goals - ended with him clattering into Aaron Lennon late in the game in a desperate — and successful — effort to deny the ex-Spurs winger an equaliser. Referee Rebecca Welch showed Tevez a yellow card, although the crowd demanded a red.
