Petra Kvitova to Retire After 2025 US Open Tour Finale

The Sun21 hours ago

TWO-TIME Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova announced Thursday that she will be retiring from the professional tennis circuit after this year's US Open.
The 35-year-old Czech, who is currently ranked down at 572 in the world, reached a career-high ranking of 2 in 2011 when she won the first of her two Wimbledon titles.
She triumphed again in 2014 and went on to reach the final of the Australian Open in 2019.
This week she was handed a wildcard entry for one last outing on the grass courts of south-west London.
'There comes a day that it is time for a new chapter and that time for me has come now,' the left-handed Kvitova wrote on social media.
'I therefore wanted to share with you that 2025 is my last season on tour as a professional.
'I am excited and very much looking forward to soak in the beauty of playing The Championships, Wimbledon one more time, a place that holds the most cherished memories in my career for me.
'While I am not entirely sure yet what my hardcourt swing in the US will look like, I am intending to finish my active playing career at the US Open in New York later this summer.'
Kvitova won Olympic bronze in 2016 but just before Christmas she was attacked in her home by a knife-wielding robber, suffering cuts to the nerves and tendons in her left-hand.
She was a member of six Czech teams to have won the Fed Cup and won the most recent of her 31 tour titles on the grass in Berlin in 2023.
Kvitova missed the 2024 season in order to give birth to her first child.
Since returning, Kvitova is 1-6, with her lone win coming in the first round of Rome.
'I could not have asked or wished for anything more,' Kvitova posted.
'Tennis has given me everything I have today, and I will continue to be forever grateful to this beautiful sport that I love.'

Tennis-Sabalenka saves four match points to outlast Rybakina in Berlin

Tennis - Berlin Tennis Open - Steffi Graf Stadium, Berlin, Germany - June 20, 2025 Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka serves during her quarter final match against Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina REUTERS/Annegret Hilse (Reuters) -World number one Aryna Sabalenka showed nerves of steel and champion's resolve to defeat Elena Rybakina 7-6(6) 3-6 7-6(6) in their Berlin Open quarter-final on Friday, saving four match points in the final-set tiebreak. Rybakina had led 6-2 in the deciding breaker and appeared on the brink of securing a place in the semis but after she was denied victory on her first match point by a net cord, the momentum swung in Sabalenka's favour. The Belarusian reeled off five straight points, eventually clinching the win as Rybakina faltered under pressure. Sabalenka's grit and power proved decisive against the 2022 Wimbledon champion. The first set was a see-saw battle, with Rybakina breaking for a 4-2 lead before Sabalenka hit straight back. Both players held serve from 4-4 to force a tiebreak, where Sabalenka edged it 8-6. Rybakina responded by racing into a 2-0 lead in the second set and breaking again late to close it out 6-3. The deciding set was fiercely contested, with Sabalenka breaking for 5-4 but failing to serve out the match as Rybakina broke back and held for 6-5. Sabalenka then held under pressure to force a tiebreak, which produced the match's most dramatic twist. "Elena, she's a great player, we had a lot of tough battles in the very last stages and she's an amazing player honestly no idea how I was able to win those last points, I think I just got lucky," Sabalenka said after the match. "When I was just starting, I won a lot of matches being down match points and actually not so long ago I was thinking, 'it's been a while since I've had some crazy comeback' and so here I am. "It's amazing to win matches like this, it trains your fighting spirit for the next tournaments and I'm proud of myself for trying till the very last point." Sabalenka will face Czech Marketa Vondrousova next, who is aiming for her first final since winning Wimbledon in 2023. Vondrousova defeated Ons Jabeur 6-4 6-1 in a rematch of the 2023 Wimbledon final. Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu advanced to the semi-finals after eighth seed Paula Badosa retired due to a right hip injury during their quarter-final clash. Wang, ranked 49th in the world, was leading 6-1 0-0 when Badosa pulled out of the contest. The Spaniard, visibly frustrated, smashed her racket and hurled it across the court following the post-match handshakes. The 23-year-old Wang has enjoyed a breakout week in the German capital, beating second seed Coco Gauff in the previous round. She will next face either American Amanda Anisimova or Russia's Liudmila Samsonova for a place in the final. (Reporting by Shifa Jahan in Bengaluru, editing by Pritha Sarkar)

Tennis-Draper reaches Queen's semis, seals top-four seeding at Wimbledon

Tennis - Queen's Club Championships - Queen's Club, London, Britain - June 20, 2025 Britain's Jack Draper celebrates after winning his quarter final match against Brandon Nakashima of the U.S. Action Images via Reuters/Peter Cziborra LONDON (Reuters) -Britain's Jack Draper continued his Wimbledon build-up by reaching the semi-finals at Queen's Club for the first time with a 6-4 5-7 6-4 defeat of American Brandon Nakashima on Friday. Draper not only kept himself on track for the prestigious ATP 500 title, but also secured the win that guarantees a top-four seeding at Wimbledon where he will be the big home hope. The 23-year-old was fully tested by world number 32 Nakashima and his powerful game began to misfire as he lost the second set on a baking hot day on Andy Murray Arena. But Draper settled back into the groove in the deciding set and broke serve in the seventh game with one of his trademark forehand pile drivers. The left-hander had to save a break point when serving for the match at 5-4 but recovered to seal victory and set up a clash with Czech Jiri Lehecka who had earlier beaten Britain's Jacob Fearnley 7-5 6-2. "It means the world to me to reach the semi-finals here," Draper, bidding to become the first British player to win the title at the prestigious west London club since Murray won it for the fifth time in 2016. While being ranked fourth means Draper will avoid either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or world number one Jannik Sinner until the semi-finals at Wimbledon, Draper shrugged off the significance of that when asked about it. "I kept getting asked about that by the journalists but I've got to reach the semi-finals first," he said. "But it is an incredible position, I was at Wimbledon last year ranked 40 so to go there as fourth seed is a testament to all the hard work my team has done so very proud of that." Alcaraz was following Draper on to court as he took on Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in his quarter-final. (Reporting by Martyn HermanEditing by Toby Davis)

French Open winner Gauff falls to Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu at first hurdle on Berlin grass

BERLIN, June 20 — Twelve days after winning her second Grand Slam title at the French Open, Coco Gauff fell at the first hurdle on grass in Berlin yesterday as beaten Paris finalist Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the quarter-finals. Recipient of a first-round bye, American Gauff lost 6-3, 6-3 to Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu as world number one Sabalenka beat Rebeka Masarova 6-2, 7-6 (8/6) in her second-round tie. Winner of 10 main tour titles, including the US Open in 2023 and the WTA Finals in 2024, Gauff has yet to lift a trophy in a grass-court tournament. 'After I won the first set, I told myself, 'OK, let's take a minute and enjoy this. I'm playing the French Open champion and I won the first set',' Wang said afterwards. 'No matter how the second and third go, I was like, 'Let's enjoy it for once second.' Wang had lost her only previous match against Gauff in straight sets on the Berlin grass in 2022. 'It was a tough match, but I'm happy I hung in there on the tough moments,' said Wang. The 49th-ranked Chinese player trailed 3-1 in the second set before reeling off five straight games. She will play Spain's Paula Badosa, the 10th seed, in the quarter-finals. Earlier, Sabalenka completed her match, suspended on Wednesday after the first set, The Belarusian had to work hard on the resumption as the 112th-ranked Swiss Masarova took her to a tiebreak. The win takes Sabalenka into the quarter-finals as she looks to build up her grass court form ahead of Wimbledon. The 27-year-old has won 20 titles but none on grass. She will face 11th-ranked Kazakh Elena Rybakina, who beat Czech doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova 6-4, 7-6 (7/5). Sabalenka is bidding to reach the last four in Berlin for the first time in her career. In the first match of the day, 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, ranked down at 164, needed two hours 20 minutes to overcome Russian 12th seed Diana Shnaider 6-3, 6-7 (3/7), 6-3. In the last eight she will face the Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the woman she beat in the Wimbledon final two years ago. — AFP
