Mpumalanga man awarded R110,000 after wrongful arrest and police assault
After suffering police assault, unlawful arrest, and detention, the court has ordered the Police Ministry to pay R110,000 to the plaintiff. The matter was heard in the High Court of South Africa at the Mpumalanga Division in Mbombela.

For his ordeal of being assaulted by police officers, wrongfully arrested, and then detained, a Mpumalanga man will be paid over R110,000 after a court issued the order this week at the High Court of South Africa at the Mpumalanga Division in Mbombela.
The Police Ministry has been ordered to pay R80,000 in respect of the plaintiff's unlawful arrest and detention from January 28 to 30, 2023.
The court further ordered that the Ministry pay R30,000 in respect of the plaintiff's unlawful assault by police officers.
The court heard that the man was travelling in his car with his wife and daughter when he was stopped by a police vehicle and told to alight from the vehicle. Whereafter, he was forced to touch a gun that was in police possession and did not belong to the plaintiff.

The judgment read: 'On 28 January 2023 at approximately 2pm at or near Newscom Trust, Mpumalanga, while he was travelling in his motor vehicle with his wife and daughter, the plaintiff was stopped by members of the SAPS from Kabokweni police station, on allegations that he had committed robbery and attempted murder.
'Only the plaintiff testified during the hearing of the matter. He testified that the police officers blocked his motor vehicle. He was forced to alight from his motor vehicle, pushed to the ground, and was assaulted several times on the face with open hands by four police officers. While on the ground, he was trampled upon with booted feet. The plaintiff was taken to the motor vehicle where a firearm had been placed by one of the police officers. He was instructed to touch the firearm with his hands, but he refused. The police officers continued to assault him with open hands for refusing to touch the firearm.'
The police officers placed the plaintiff in a police vehicle and left the man's wife and 15-year-old daughter behind.
Police drove with the plaintiff to his house, where he was instructed to produce a firearm.
'He informed the police officers that there was no firearm at his home. The police officers assaulted him once again. He was pushed to the ground and his hands were cuffed to the back together with his feet. His face was covered with a plastic bag. When the plastic bag was ultimately removed, water was poured into one of his ears, and he was slapped several times with an open hand on the ear.
'Thereafter, he was taken to the police cells at Pienaar police station. The following day, other police officers assaulted him while he was in the cells, alleging that he had broken into the house of one of the police officers and stolen a firearm. One of them kicked him on the back and stomach. His fingerprints were taken,' the judgment read.

A man impersonating an eThekwini Municipality employee was caught fraudulently filling diesel. Image: Supplied A man posing as an eThekwini Municipality employee has been arrested in connection with a large-scale diesel theft operation that is believed to have cost Durban hundreds of thousands of rands. The arrest followed a tip-off about suspicious fuel activity involving Municipal vehicles, which prompted an internal investigation. According to the eThekwini Municipality, forensic investigators from the City Integrity and Investigations Directorate uncovered the scam after receiving reports from the City Fleet Directorate about Municipal vehicles filling diesel more than 10 times a day at petrol stations used by the City's official fleet. The suspect was found using a fuel master card assigned to a Water and Sanitation vehicle that had long been out of service and marked for disposal. Investigators discovered that privately owned vehicles were fraudulently using the card to siphon diesel. In a bid to avoid detection, the suspect duplicated number plates and branded the doors of his vehicles to resemble authentic Municipal fleet cars. These vehicles were used to stockpile diesel, which was later resold. 'The culprit had four vehicles fitted with a 750-litre fuel tank at the base of each single cab van. The diesel was stored in these tanks and resold. Each vehicle generated about R78 000 a day,' said Jimmy Ngcobo, Director of the City Integrity and Investigations Directorate. Former fleet supervisor jailed for demanding bribe from service provider
A former worker of the uMsunduzi Municipality has been sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for demanding a bribe from a service provider. Image: File The Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court has sentenced a former employee of Msunduzi Municipality to 10 years' direct imprisonment for demanding a R100,000 bribe from a service provider. The service provider was owed R1.5 million by the municipality. Nhlakanipho Dlamini, 46, was employed as a fleet supervisor by the municipality in January 2020. During the execution of his duties, Dlamini demanded a bribe from the service provider so that he could start processing the R1.5 million. Mhlongo stated that this followed an intensive investigation and an undercover operation. 'He appeared in court and was released on bail. On August 27, 2024, Dlamini was found guilty on two counts of corruption; hence, he was sentenced,' he said. Additionally, Mhlongo said Dlamini was sentenced to eight years' direct imprisonment for the first count of corruption and another eight years' imprisonment for the second count of corruption. 'Six years of count one and count two will run concurrently, meaning that he will effectively serve a total of 10 years' direct imprisonment,' he clarified. KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General Dr Lesetja Senona, welcomed the sentence and commended the investigating team as well as the prosecution team for the good work.

Hitman jailed for brutal attack on elderly couple planned by son-in-law
A man who was paid R1,000 to kill an elderly couple as they prepared for Fajr — a sunrise prayer — has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the contract killing in Cape Town. Reagan Davis, 35, was handed two life sentences and 15 years' direct imprisonment by the Cape Town high court for the murder of 75-year-old Hashim Ahmed Dennis and attempted murder of his 70-year-old wife Kulsoem at home in Northpine, Brackenfell, on January 31 2020. Davis was a co-accused with the elderly couple's son-in-law Brent Williams — who died in February before the state closed its case. 'Senior state advocate Evadne Kortje proved the murder was a contract killing and the accused was paid R1,000, which he used to buy takkies,' said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila. Evidence was led by 10 witnesses which revealed Williams and his wife Ibtisaam Dennis, who lived with the elderly couple, had marital problems. Williams hired Davis and an unknown accomplice to invade and attack his in-laws to 'neutralise' his marital problems. Williams drove the hitmen to the property and they gained access via a security gate at about 4am and entered the couple's flatlet. '[Kulsoem Dennis] heard the voice of an intruder asking where the money was in Afrikaans before brutally attacking her. The intruder hit her on the head, neck and chest with a gun. She chanted, 'Allahu-Akbar' [God is Great] until she hit the floor. Severely injured and in shock, she lay on the floor, pretending to be dead as her [headscarf] fell softly over her face and she kept her eyes closed,' said Ntabazalila. Her husband was attacked as he came out the bathroom and died after being stabbed 15 times. Ibtisaam Dennis called the police, whose investigation confirmed her husband was the mastermind behind the attack.
