11 years of Modi govt redefined India's development narrative: Jitendra Singh

New Delhi: With bolder decisions, futuristic reforms, and transformative governance, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has in the last 11 years redefined India's development narrative and restored public faith in the system, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, said on Thursday.
Singh stated that initiatives like the rollout of GST to the push for Digital India, or the opening up of strategic sectors like space and atomic energy to private players, the past decade has seen the government under PM Modi prioritising long-term national interest and setting new benchmarks in decision-making.
'Each initiative has been driven by the vision of a self-reliant and globally competitive India,' he said, in a media interview.
Further, by enabling the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) to foster innovation, particularly in vaccine development, genetic research, and bio-entrepreneurship, the Modi government positioned India as a rising global tech hub.
The seamless integration of traditional governance goals with modern technology has been another key feature of the Modi era, the Minister noted.
'Under PM Modi's leadership, sectors like space, atomic energy, and biotechnology received unprecedented push. The global recognition India enjoys today in these fields is a direct result of consistent support and visionary policies,' he said.
Citing the example of space tech -- once confined to building rockets – which powers telemedicine, farming, and classrooms, Singh highlighted that 'science is no longer confined to labs'. Space tech is also improving daily life through applications like agricultural weather updates, and online education.
The MoS also highlighted transformative initiatives such as the JAM (Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile) trinity, the Swachh Bharat Mission, and Special Campaign 4.0.
Improving social security, PM Modi-led government also launched progressive pension reforms benefiting women.
Family pensions will now continue for childless widows even after remarriage, and divorced daughters are entitled to family pensions if divorce proceedings were initiated while their parents were alive, said Singh, adding the upcoming tenure 'will be about accelerating the gains of the last decade'.
Meanwhile, the Science and Technology Minister also reaffirmed India's leading role in global climate action, urging citizens and institutions alike to adopt sustainable practices as a national duty.
He underlined that India's approach to climate resilience is rooted in both scientific innovation and public participation.
'Earth gives us everything -- clean air, fresh water, fertile land. But we take these gifts for granted,' Singh said, addressing a virtual event organised by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) on the occasion of World Environment Day.
Warning the increasing threats from pollution, deforestation, and climate change, he said that combating these challenges must become a collective responsibility, enabled by behavioural change and lifestyle-driven movements like Mission LiFE—Lifestyle for Environment.

HM Shah to visit Chhattisgarh today to bolster anti-Maoist strategy

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Chhattisgarh on Sunday for a crucial two-day visit to strengthen the ongoing crackdown against left-wing extremism and launch key infrastructure projects to support forensic investigation capabilities in the region. During the visit (June 22-23), HM Shah is scheduled to chair a high-level meeting with senior security and administrative officials to evaluate the progress made in the fight against Maoist insurgency. The meeting will also focus on refining the Centre's strategy to achieve the declared goal of eliminating Maoist influence by the set deadline of March 31, 2026. Highlighting the Centre's commitment to long-term stability and improved security infrastructure in the region, Shah will also lay the foundation stone for a campus of the prestigious National Forensic Science University (NFSU) in Naya Raipur. The proposed world-class campus will be developed on 40 acres of land already allocated by the state government. The estimated cost for the project is between Rs 350–400 crore and will be entirely funded by the Central government. In addition to the NFSU campus, a separate 6-acre area has been earmarked for a state-run forensic laboratory, aimed at further enhancing the state's investigative capabilities. According to Chhattisgarh Home Minister Vijay Sharma, the Union Home Minister will perform the 'bhoomi-pujan' for both facilities during his visit. Shah will also spend time at one of the frontline security camps, reflecting the Centre's solidarity with forces operating in high-risk zones. Sources familiar with the anti-Naxal operations have reported significant success, with 32 out of 45 members of the Maoist Central Committee already neutralised in various encounters. Efforts continue to locate and apprehend the remaining top leaders of the outlawed outfit.

Himachal Pradesh deputy chief minister Mukesh Agnihotri (File) While reviewing the status of the mission during a meeting, the deputy CM said that out of the ₹ 6,300 crore sanctioned by the Centre, only ₹ 5,100 crore has been received so far and an amount of ₹ 1,200 crore was still pending with the central government. Chandigarh: Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla to call councillors' meet over new ‘Smart Parking' plan

Nearly three months after the Chandigarh MC House scrapped the 'Smart Parking' project, mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla is set to call an all-councillor meeting to run past the project's revised blueprint before tabling it in the General House on June 27. Chandigarh currently has 89 paid parking lots, being run by MC, on around 5.22 lakh square metre area, which can house 16,030 equivalent car spaces. (HT File) The mayor said the parking committee, headed by councillor Saurabh Joshi, has already finalised the terms and conditions of the project, and included it in the request for proposal (RFP). 'But before we take it to the House, we want all councillors to give their feedback and suggestions so that it can be added in the final draft. We will call the all-councillor meet on Tuesday or Wednesday,' said Babla. Officials said the revamped project will have a vehicle-stay tracking system, 'pink parking zones' for women, internet connectivity for real-time parking management, option of pre-booking paid parking slots, and pre-paid parking cards. The software support for these systems is proposed to come from the Society for Promotion of IT in Chandigarh (SPIC). Additionally, there have been deliberations on data protection protocols, revenue-sharing models, inclusion of GST and stamp duties, and a new fee structure. Notably, on April 27, the House had approved a hike in parking rates, which will come into effect once the smart system is rolled out. According to the new structure, parking will remain free for the first 15 minutes at all 89 MC-managed lots — a move aimed at easing quick-turnaround visits and improving vehicle circulation. For longer durations, four-wheelers will be charged ₹ 20 for up to four hours, up from the current ₹ 14. Two-wheeler users will pay ₹ 10, a rise from ₹ 7. Premium rates of ₹ 85 for the first four hours have been proposed for high-traffic commercial hubs such as Elante Mall, Fun Republic, and Piccadily Square, making them the most expensive parking spots in the city. All-councillor meets, a flop-show in past This is not the first time that Babla is calling an all-councillor meeting. The meetings, held in the past, to either discuss agenda for governor meeting or for allocation of ward development funds, have remained a flop show, with the Opposition parties – Congress and Aam Aadmi Party – either boycotting it or walking out after clashes with MC officials. In the 35-member House, the Bharatiya Janata Party has the majority, with 16 councillors, followed by the Aam Aadmi Party with 13 councillors and six of the Congress. House had rejected project over 'flawed' tender conditions Originally conceived in August 2022, the Smart Parking project aimed to introduce a FASTag-enabled parking system across all parking lots in Chandigarh. In July 2023, MC House had decided on new rates to be implemented after the project's rollout. But the project remained on paper and tenders could not be finalised. But after years of delay, the much-anticipated smart-parking project was rejected by the House in March this year, citing flawed tender conditions, and councillors had called for a fresh blueprint with revised rates and conditions. The MC had said the rates proposed in the old project proposal, when combined with GST, result in impractical amounts, making payments inconvenient for residents. In the new proposal now, MC has rounded the figures off for easier transactions. Chandigarh currently has 89 paid parking lots, being run by MC, on around 5.22 lakh square metre area, which can house 16,030 equivalent car spaces (ECS). Though these were earlier managed by private firms, the civic body started operating 73 out of the 89 parking lots since February last year after the private contractors running it were found to be involved in a multi-crore scam. The remaining parking lots are presently running free-of-cost due to MC's limited manpower. In the absence of a proper parking management system, vehicles can often be seen parked haphazardly. The MC earns approximately ₹ 1 crore every month from the 73 parking lots in the city, which is higher than the average when private firms used to run the lots.
