SUN TV family feud explodes: What Dayanidhi Maran's legal notice to brother Kalanithi reveals

In a high-stakes family dispute, former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran has issued a legal notice to his elder brother, Kalanithi Maran, accusing him of violating regulations and unlawfully transferring lakhs of shares of the Chennai-based Sun TV Group to himself.
These shares are reportedly worth several thousand crores of rupees.
Dayanidhi alleged that Kalanithi received ₹ 5,926 crore in dividends up to 2023 and an additional ₹ 455 crore in 2024. He alleged that 'the offences committed by you are continuous in nature and continue as on date.'
Meanwhile, Sun TV Network Ltd, the company at the center of the dispute, reported a turnover of ₹ 4,544 crore and a net profit of ₹ 1,654.45 crore for the financial year 2024–25.
Dayanidhi Maran has warned that he will approach regulatory and enforcement agencies—including the SFIO, SEBI, and ED—to initiate civil, criminal, and regulatory proceedings against his brother Kalanithi Maran and associates, including Kalanithi's wife, Kaveri Kalanithi. He has demanded that the ownership structure of M/s SUN TV Network Limited and all related entities be restored to their original form as of September 15, 2003, Times of India reported.
Specifically, he called for the reinstatement of shares to their rightful owners: M.K. Dayalu Ammal, wife of the late Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, and the legal heirs of the late S.N. Maran (Murasoli Maran). He has given a one-week deadline for compliance.
Dayanidhi Maran recalled that the original parent company, M/s Sumangali Publications Private Limited, was incorporated on December 12, 1985, with only two promoters—M.K. Dayalu Ammal and Mallika Maran, wife of Murasoli Maran. At the time of incorporation, each held a 50% share in the company, according to a report by Times of India.
When Murasoli Maran was critically ill in Sept 2003, and when it was clear he would pass away any moment, Kalanithi Maran allotted 12 lakh equity shares of M/s SUN TV Private Limited to himself without sufficient, proper valuation and fair consideration, and without obtaining consent from all other existing shareholders — the family of Maran and the family of Karunanidhi — at a face value of ₹ 10 each, it said.
The offences committed by you are continuous in nature and continue as on date.
Referring to Kaveri Kalanithi's remuneration, Dayanidhi Maran alleged that she unjustly enriched herself by drawing a salary of ₹ 87.5 crore annually. 'This reflects your deceptive scheme to siphon off and misappropriate company funds,' he stated in the legal notice. He further demanded that Kalanithi Maran and his wife, Kaveri Kalanithi, immediately return all monetary benefits, dividends, assets, and any form of income unlawfully received or appropriated from 2003 to the present, according to the TOI report.
The legal notice was addressed to Kalanithi Maran, Kaveri Kalanithi, Ravi Ramamoorthy, Natarajan Sivasubramanian (chartered accountant), Sridhar Swaminathan (financial consultant), Swaminathan, and Sharad Kumar.

However, this project was discontinued after Swiggy decided not to scale it up beyond a small cohort. In January, the company rolled out professional services marketplace Pyng, signalling that it was following a house of apps strategy similar to Chinese tech giants Alibaba and Meituan, which have also had multiple apps for various services. This is in contrast to the 'superapp' strategy, where consumers are expected to come for one basic use-case and transact across multiple services. Also, superapps are yet to see any noteworthy success at scale in Crew and Pyng, Swiggy now has the main app, which houses food delivery, quick commerce, dining out and its events platform Scenes. The quick commerce unit, Instamart, also got a separate app in launch of Crew was first reported by Entrackr. Swiggy recently suspended its peer-to-peer parcel delivery service Genie, which was available in 70 cities. The company has also licenced its cloud kitchen brands to food service outfit Kouzina, with plans to fully transfer these businesses upon fulfilment of certain conditions. On Friday, Swiggy shares ended 3.1% higher at Rs 385.90 on the BSE.

Several Opposition leaders on Friday criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah for saying those who speak English in India will soon feel ashamed. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi remarked that English is 'not a barrier, but a bridge', and said that the language provides employment and boosts people's self-confidence. Shah's remarks In a video shared by news channels on Thursday, Shah was quoted as saying the creation of a society in which those who speak English in India would feel ashamed was not far away. 'A complete India cannot be imagined with aadhi-adhuri [incomplete] foreign languages, that can only happen with Indianness, with Indian languages,' Shah reportedly said at a book launch event in New Delhi. He also called Indian languages 'jewels of our culture', adding that without them, 'we cease to be Indians'. The home minister's comments on Thursday come against the backdrop of several state governments and regional parties accusing the Centre of imposing Hindi through the National Education Policy's three-language formula. On Tuesday, the Maharashtra government issued an order making Hindi a 'generally' taught third language for students from Class 1 to Class 5 in Marathi and English medium schools. The Opposition in the state has accused the BJP-led government of trying to erase Marathi identity through the move. Tamil Nadu too has repeatedly opposed the three-language formula in the National Education Policy. In an apparent reference to the issue of China manipulating country of origin norms by routing its goods via Asean countries, Goyal said that the bloc had become the 'B-Team of China'. Goyal further said, 'Instead of that, we're focusing on Australia and New Zealand, which will take another three to four months.' India and Asean signed the ASEAN–India Free Trade Area (AIFTA) in 2010. While the agreement led to the increase in trade by volume, the balance of trade remains heavily in favour of Asean countries. Coupled with the issue of China gaming the trade pact, the AIFTA has often drawn criticism about not being as beneficial to India as envisioned. Besides the United States, EU, Australia, and New Zealand, India is currently also negotiating trade deals with the trading bloc European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which comprises Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland. India is also holding trade talks with Chile and Peru.
