India defeated on battlefield, diplomatic front: Bilawal
KARACHI: After leading a diplomatic mission to Europe and the US in the wake of Pakistan-India clashes, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman and former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said on Friday that Islamabad defeated New Delhi on the battlefield and diplomatic front.
Bilawal received a warm welcome from the PPP leaders and workers in Karachi upon returning to the country on Friday.
The Bilawal-led high-level diplomatic delegation visited world major capitals during the 11-day tour. It presented Pakistan's stance and highlighted New Delhi's provocations and aggression against Islamabad.
It also cautioned the international community about India's increasingly aggressive stance and its potential to destabilise South Asia.
Addressing the workers Friday, he said that the high-level delegation visited major capitals in the US, UK and Europe on the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari.
Bilawal said the delegation presented Pakistan's message of peace, the country's stance on Kashmir dispute, Indus Waters Treaty and counterterrorism. 'India must comply with int'l law, Indus Waters Treaty, or Pakistan will fight another war,' warned PPP chief.
The former foreign minister credited the tireless efforts of Pakistani ambassadors across the globe for the country's victory on the diplomatic front.
The PPP chief said India had also attacked Pakistan in 2019 during the government of Imran Khan but 'he did not respond to New Delhi properly'. He claimed that Islamabad gave a solid response to New Delhi both on the battlefield and diplomatically after the arch-rival used Kashmir to attack Pakistan.
'It is our historic victory as the world accepted that Kashmir is not a bilateral but a global issue,' said Bilawal while pointing towards US President Trump's statement offering mediation on the longstanding issue.
He also claimed that the statement from the head of the US military to acknowledge Pakistan's efforts in counterterrorism and calling Islamabad a 'phenomenal partner in war against terror' was also a prove of the success of his diplomatic mission.

Pakistan budget for 2025-26 to consolidate economic gains, NA told
ISLAMABAD: Amid criticism from opposition lawmakers, Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani on Friday said that the budget is aimed at further consolidating economic gains, providing relief to the people, and continuing the reform process. He said the reforms would also extend to tax fraud investigations, with new safeguards to prevent arbitrary arrests. Under the new policy, arrests during investigations would only occur in cases of sales tax fraud exceeding Rs50 million, and only after approval from a three-member Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) panel. The opposition lawmakers; however, sharply criticised the budget, saying it lacked vision and heavily favoured the handful elite. They decried the increase in allocations to the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), which rose from Rs592 billion to Rs716 billion, arguing it came at the expense of education, whose allocation remains comparatively low. PTI says 'federal budget favours elite, ignores masses' The opposition also slammed what they termed a symbolic 10 percent salary raise for government employees and a seven percent hike in pensions for retired government employees. They noted the budget failed to increase the minimum wage, allegedly due to pressure from industrialists. The Finance Ministry did announce some tax relief for salaried individuals, a promise previously made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. But opposition members ridiculed the tax relief for those earning above Rs1.2 million annually, calling it a 'cruel joke.' At the outset of the session, Federal Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb laid four Statutory Regulatory Orders (SROs) before the House, issued under the Customs Act and Income Tax Ordinance. He confirmed to the speaker that he would conclude the budget debate on Monday. Several lawmakers belonging to both opposition and treasury participated in the ongoing debate on the Finance Bill for 2025-26, voicing a wide range of concerns and suggestions. Pakistan People's Party (PPP) MNA Nafeesa Shah called for greater support to the agriculture sector. Saba Talpur echoed this sentiment, urging the government to cut prices of seeds, fertilisers, and pesticides to support farmers. Junaid Akbar Khan of PTI said the budget had nothing for the people and called attention to sacrifices made by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the war on terror. Agha Rafiullah of PPP demanded that the government review proposed family pension reforms and remove limitations affecting spouses and disabled children. Sahibzada Hamid Raza of SIC criticised the apparent neglect of health and education sectors in the budget. Minister for Religious Affairs Muhammad Yousaf described the budget as balanced and praised the government's handling of Hajj arrangements, noting that over 115,000 Pakistani pilgrims participated this year. Saudi Arabia awarded Pakistan for its management, and planning for next year's pilgrimage has already begun, he added. Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, Minister for the Board of Investment, said macroeconomic indicators were improving, with inflation falling and remittances rising. He urged all political parties to agree on a Charter of Economy to attract investors. Minister for Public Affairs Rana Mubashir Iqbal said Rs250 billion had been allocated for Balochistan, including Rs100 billion for road infrastructure and further allocations for dams, agriculture, energy, education, and health. Minister of State for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Kesoo Mal Kheal Das stressed that no new taxes had been imposed on agriculture and reaffirmed the government's commitment to completing the Sukkur-Karachi motorway. Murtaza Mahmud lauded the government's steps toward economic stability, while Pullain Baloch called for tax relief for the public. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar reiterated Pakistan's stance against Israeli aggression – whether in Gaza, Lebanon, Iran, or elsewhere – stating that the country will continue to oppose and condemn such actions. Pakistan faces challenges in Free Trade Agreement talks with ASEAN
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is reportedly facing challenges in negotiation of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) due to her status of a Sectoral rather than Full Dialogue Partner, compounded by Singapore's opposition to Pakistan's elevation to full partnership status, sources in Commerce Ministry told Business Recorder. Pakistan was granted Sectoral Dialogue Partner (SDP) status by ASEAN in 1993, marking the beginning of formal cooperation. The first official meeting establishing ASEAN-Pakistan Sectoral Dialogue Relations was held in Islamabad in 1997, initially focusing on key areas including trade, industry, investment, science and technology, tourism, and human resource development. The relationship was further institutionalised in 1999 with the creation of the ASEAN-Pakistan Joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee (APJSCC), which has since convened seven times, most recently in Jakarta in September 2023. During the 4th APJSCC meeting in 2010, Pakistan formally proposed negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with ASEAN. Pakistan plans to revisit FTAs, mulls bankruptcy law Currently ASEAN has signed Free Trade Agreements with six countries (China, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and India), all of which are its Full Dialogue Partner countries. On February 6, 2025, ASEAN and Pakistan reaffirmed commitment to further deepen their partnership at the 8th Meeting of the ASEAN-Pakistan Joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee held at the ASEAN Headquarters Secretariat in Jakarta The meeting noted the progress made in the first year of implementation of the ASEAN-Pakistan Sectoral Dialogue Partnership: Practical Cooperation Areas (PCA) (2024-2028). Both sides recognised notable cooperation in some areas such as trade and investment; business-to-business linkages; science, technology, and innovation; information and media; and human resource development. ASEAN and Pakistan shared the view that there remain tremendous opportunities for closer collaboration and recognised the need to work closely to tap the full potentials of the partnership for mutual benefit. ASEAN encouraged Pakistan to support the forthcoming ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and its Strategic Plans while actively undertaking practical cooperation with ASEAN across the four identified key areas of cooperation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP). ASEAN also encouraged Pakistan to support the implementation of the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025 (MPAC) and the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) Work Plan IV, and welcomed collaboration with ASEAN centres of excellence. Looking ahead, they explored opportunities to continue strengthening collaboration in the areas of mutual interest as guided by the PCA 2024-2028, including combating transnational crime, peace and reconciliation, trade and investment, digital economy and cybersecurity, business-to-business networking and linkages, food security, halal industry, energy security, tourism, renewable energy, circular and green economy, infrastructure development, disaster management, climate change, education; human resource development, media, health, climate-change, disaster management, as well as, people-to-people exchanges. To overcome this challenge and to deepen its ingress in ASEAN, Pakistan has adopted a strategic shift toward strengthening bilateral relations with individual member states within ASEAN region. This approach aims to build stronger economic and political ties that could eventually facilitate Pakistan's transition to Full Dialogue Partner status and revive prospects for a comprehensive ASEAN-Pakistan FTA. Pakistan and Malaysia signed the Malaysia-Pakistan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (MPCEPA) in 2007, establishing a free trade agreement between the two nations. This agreement is Pakistan's first-ever comprehensive partnership agreement, covering goods, services and investment. Currently, both countries are engaged in review and revision of this existing FTA to further enhance bilateral trade and economic cooperation. Pakistan and Indonesia signed a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) in 2012 to boost bilateral trade. The two nations have agreed to look into further expansion of the PTA in light of the Framework Agreement signed by the two in 2005. Pakistan and Thailand initiated negotiations on signing of an FTA in 2015. Both sides held nine rounds of negotiations after which the negotiations have come to a pause. Recently, Pakistan has proposed to negotiate a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) instead. Pakistan has recently established a trade mission in Singapore to strengthen bilateral economic ties and explore new trade and investment opportunities. Pakistan has also shared a draft MOU for establishing JTC with the Singapore. Singapore side is of the opinion that both countries first need to increase B2B exchanges and interaction. Opening of Pakistan's Trade Mission will facilitate these exchanges. Pakistan opened its trade mission in Manila last year, to enhance bilateral trade relations and foster economic cooperation with the Philippines. As a result, for the first time, delegates from Philippines have participated in flagship events of TDAP. Pakistan and Vietnam have initiated negotiations to explore the possibility of signing a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) during their upcoming 5th Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting on July 10-11, 2025, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral trade relations. Pakistan and Cambodia have established their first institutional mechanism, a Joint Trade Committee (JTC), with the inaugural meeting taking place in January 2025 during the Commerce Minister's visit to Phnom Penh. Pakistan explores collaborative opportunities with Russian oil and gas company
ISLAMABAD: A high-level Pakistani delegation, led by Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, held a meeting with representatives of Gazprom, Russia's leading oil and gas company, headed by Sergey Tumanov, general director of Gazprom International. Ahmed Hayat Lak, MD/CEO Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), was also present in the meeting.
