Jurassic World: The Experience
This review is from 2022, when the show ran under the name Jurassic World: The Exhibition at ExCel London. It returns for 2025 in tweaked form at NEON in Battersea.
It is an irrefutable law of nature that every London summer requires some sort of dinosaur-based family extravaganza or other, from the puppet fun of 'Dinosaur World Live' at the Open Air Theatre to the distinctly wobbly animatronic dinosaurs of last year's 'Jurassic Encounter'.
'Jurassic World: The Exhibition' has a distinct edge over most of the competition insofar as it's an official tie-in with the deathlessly popular Jurassic World/Park films.
To be honest, though, this is a slightly double-edged sword: it's cool that we get encounters with 'Jurassic World' signature beasties Indominus Rex and Blue the Velociraptor. But a few pre-recorded appearances from the films' extensive casts – who've gamely contributed to various video game spin-offs – might have given it that little something extra. Or just a little more recognisable Jurassic Worldliness. The problem with being the 'official' live spin-off from a multibillion-dollar film franchise is that it raises expectations high for what is, ultimately, a solid mid-budget kids' show with average effects, containing a lot of very generic hallmarks of the summer dinosaur extravaganza (notably the classic baby dinosaur hand-puppets).
It's still pretty diverting. A starting sequence where we're ushered on to a 'ferry' to visit Isla Nublar, the setting of the films, is a cute immersive touch. Efforts made throughout the show to cap guest numbers in any given area at any given time are skilfully done and much appreciated. And the concluding double whammy of the Indominus Rex and the T-rex is pretty pulse-raising in terms of big scary animatronics.
But not everything hits the mark. There's a very weird scene in which a performer badly lip syncs to a commentary on Blue the raptor's training regime; why he couldn't deliver the lines himself I have no idea, but it's pretty embarrassing, not least because Blue is performed by a sluggish, rubbery puppet that moves with the grace of a pantomime horse with a gammy hoof. It doesn't sink it, but the whole point of the franchise ever since Steven Speilberg launched it in 1993 is that the dinosaurs look good, and that certainly can't be said across the board here

Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey has opened up about joining the Jurassic Park franchise, with him appearing alongside Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali in the new film Actor Jonathan Bailey has teased that he risked his life whilst working on Jurassic World Rebirth. He's revealed that he filmed alongside potentially lethal snakes for his role but shared his excitement over the experience. Jonathan, 37 - known for his roles in Bridgerton and more recently Wicked - said he was told that the serpents could kill him within seconds on the set of the Jurassic World film, which is set to be released next month. He's shared that he was instructed on safety measures to avoid a fatal encounter. As reported by the Daily Star, Jonathan recalled: "When you're making a movie, you want to feel the world of the movie as much as possible." He went on to say that he worked on scenes in snake-infested waters for the project. He said: "And my gosh, do you feel it when you're up to your waist in snake-infested waters. You have snake wranglers around you who do make you feel safe, but they also say things like 'be careful around this one. If you get bit, you die in 10 seconds'." He expressed excitement over appearing in the franchise through, saying: "That kind of moment speaks to the visceral thrills that Jurassic movies are all about! I had never had that kind of experience on a set before. It was all very exciting and I hope it's matched by the film." Jonathan suggested that he didn't shy away from stunts whilst on location in Thailand. Describing one intense scene from the production, as reported by the outlet, he said that his "inner child" was "screaming with delight". He said: "We had to shoot a scene where my character must pull someone back into a boat because she's falling off the side. I had water cannons blasting me, the boat's flipping around, and my inner child, which isn't all that inner, was just screaming with delight." Jonathan stars as palaeontologist Dr Henry Loomis in Jurassic World Rebirth, which is the seventh instalment in the long-running film franchise that previously starred Chris Pratt. He leads the cast with Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali. Jonathan has shared that he relished the opportunity to play the character. He said about his role in Jurassic World Rebirth: "To play Henry, who embodies the love of nature and our best curiosities about it, was great fun." It's the latest high-profile role in Jonathan's career. In recent years, he's starred as Fiyero Tigelaar in Wicked (2024). He's set to reprise the role in sequel Wicked: For Good (2025), which is scheduled to be released in November. Jonathan is also known for playing Lord Anthony Bridgerton in Netflix series Bridgerton. The show launched on the streaming platform in 2020 and his character was the focus of the second season, which aired in 2022. He's teased that he's been a fan of Jurassic Park for years, having been introduced to the franchise as a child. He said: "I was five when my family took me to Jurassic Park, so a questionable choice by my parents. The characters were so vivid and because it was Spielberg, it was a sumptuous escapist delight."

The 78-year-old director helmed the original 1993 film Jurassic Park, its 1997 sequel The Lost Work: Jurassic Park and has served as an executive producer on the Jurassic World series ever since, and Koepp - who wrote the first movie and its follow-up - revealed one of the main reasons he returned for Jurassic World: Rebirth was because Spielberg was "very involved" in it. Speaking to Deadline about Spielberg, the 62-year-old scribe said: "Oh, he was very involved. "That was one of the reasons I most wanted to do it. Because Steven was deeply involved from the beginning, and for the six months that we were working on the script, it was really just him and me. "I'd send him my ideas, and we'd work on them, and when you have Steven's full attention, the results can be pretty spectacular." Jurassic World: Rebirth - which stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali - follows a team of covert operatives on a mission to stop a rogue biotech organisation from unleashing weaponised dinosaurs around the world. Koepp previously said Jurassic World: Rebirth - which was directed by Gareth Edwards and releases on 2 July 2025 - would capture the "spirit of the first movie". He told TheWrap: "[We were trying to evoke] the spirit of the first movie, which is the tone that we would like to get closest to." The writer added it was "the idea of starting afresh" which convinced him to return to the Jurassic series. He said: "You don't often get that chance, where they give you very few guidelines, except there must be dinosaurs in it." Even so, before he agreed to come back for Jurassic World: Rebirth, Koepp had a list of demands he gave to Universal Pictures that the studio had to meet. He explained: "Number one was – the events of the previous six movies cannot be denied or contradicted, because I hate a retcon. "[Number two was] all science must be real. [Third was] humour is oxygen." Reflecting on returning to the Jurassic series, Koepp said it was "weird and trippy" for him to step back in time for Jurassic World: Rebirth. He explained: "It even smelled the same. It felt low pressure, even though Universal might be horrified to hear that." Looking back at Jurassic Park and The Lost World, Koepp said "writing those first two movies were some of [his] favourite experiences in [his] career so far". He added: "The combination of grand adventure and real science is right up my alley. And it was fun to be able to decide on a new tone, because every three movies seems like a good time to change tone and characters in a franchise.
