Zahid's remarks on Tengku Zafrul show Umno ready to move on, says analyst
Analysts said Tengku Zafrul Aziz's departure will have little impact on Umno, likely because he is neither an MP nor a state assemblyman.
PETALING JAYA : Recent remarks by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi that the party is not losing sleep over Tengku Zafrul Aziz's departure signal Umno's readiness to move on from the former Supreme Council member, according to a political analyst.
Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said Zahid's stance suggested that Umno, having weathered numerous political challenges, would not be shaken by the departure of any individual, even one as high-profile as the investment, trade and industry minister.
'This is a form of damage control to reinforce party loyalty over personal allegiance. Umno is making it clear that it no longer wants to be seen as dependent on technocrats or 'parachute candidates' who lack strong grassroots support, such as Tengku Zafrul in Kuala Selangor and later Kota Raja.
'It also shows that Umno is working to rebuild a grassroots-oriented identity rather than one rooted in political elites,' he told FMT.
On June 2, Zahid said the party was not losing sleep over Tengku Zafrul's decision to quit and his intention to join PKR, adding that it was 'better he left if he couldn't remain loyal'.
Tengku Zafrul failed to wrest the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat during the 15th general election and currently serves as Umno's Kota Raja division chief.
Awang Azman said Zahid's statement might not fully appease party leaders or grassroots members, as some still viewed Tengku Zafrul as a political opportunist who 'rode on the party's goodwill' without earning it through merit or sacrifice.
'To prevent this episode from becoming a political liability in the next general election, Umno must act wisely and consolidate its internal strength, not just to move on but also to move forward,' he said.
He warned that mishandling the issue could give the impression of internal instability, urging firm action to prevent political opportunism from taking root in the party.
'Zahid's leadership must be followed by a strategy to repair internal perceptions,' he said.
Meanwhile, Ariff Aizuddin Azlan of Universiti Teknologi Mara said Zahid's stance suggested that Tengku Zafrul's exit had little practical impact on Umno, likely because he holds no elected office.
'The Umno president must demonstrate political maturity, as whatever he says will be taken as principle and guidance.
'The best way to curb the polemics is by opening constructive dialogue channels with all stakeholders and working together to find solutions,' he said.

Ringgit climbs against major currencies at opening as Iran tensions, US airstrikes lift oil and gold
KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 — The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar and a basket of major currencies on Monday despite a strong US Dollar Index (DXY) as ongoing geopolitical tensions, with the United States' (US) involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict, in focus, said an analyst. At 8 am, the local note rose to 4.2420/2655 against the greenback from Friday's close of 4.2505/2565. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said there are fears of a wider conflagration in the region as the US announced 'successful' airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites. 'The focus is clearly on how it might impact crude oil prices and risk sentiment. 'Brent Crude oil prices rallied by 2.49 per cent to US$78.93 per barrel, the highest since January 2025 with concerns over Iranian retaliation and (the possibility that it) might use the Straits of Hormuz choke point as leverage in the prevailing conflict,' he told Bernama. Mohd Afzanizam also said the ringgit could depreciate against the US dollar due to the defensive mode among traders. He said there could be a risk-off mode in the currency market,as the US DXY has risen to 98.937 points, while precious commodities, such as spot gold, were up by 0.27 per cent to US$3,377.42 per ounce. At the opening, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It trended higher against the Japanese yen at 2.9023/9186 from 2.9245/9289 at Friday's close, rose versus the British pound to 5.7000/7316 from 5.7356/7437, and inched up against the euro to 4.8800/9070 from 4.9000/9069 previously. The local note also traded firmer against its Asean counterparts. It appreciated against the Singapore dollar to 3.2948/3133 from 3.3088/3140 at Friday's close, climbed to 12.9243/13.0042 from 12.9727/9969 versus the Thai baht, advanced vis-a-vis the Indonesian rupiah to 258.6/260.2 from 259.2/259.7 and gained against the Philippine peso to 7.42/7.46 from 7.43/7.45. — Bernama

ECRL cable thefts raise alarm, could derail testing schedule, says MRL CEO
BEIJING, June 23 — The Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) has raised concerns over a series of cable theft incidents that could disrupt the planning and operational timeline of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, which is now at a critical phase ahead of its targeted completion in December 2026. MRL chief executive officer Datuk Seri Darwis Abdul Razak said several theft cases have been detected at specific locations along the ECRL track, which spans Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Selangor. 'These incidents not only raise the cost of repairs and replacements but also risk delaying the train testing and commissioning schedule, which is expected to begin in June 2026,' he said during an interview with the Malaysian media delegation in Beijing. Darwis noted that if CCCC fails to complete the project on time — operations are slated to begin in 2027 — the conglomerate could incur losses of RM1.25 million per day. MRL, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Minister of Finance (Incorporated), is the owner of the mega infrastructure project, while China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) is the main contractor. As the project owner, MRL has lodged police reports on the incidents and is stepping up security measures, including appointing a dedicated security firm to monitor and safeguard ECRL assets on the ground, he said. 'However, we are also counting on continued cooperation from the authorities and local communities to help curb this crime. This is a national project that we must protect together,' said Darwis. He also plans to meet with Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and the police chiefs of the affected states to seek cooperation and solutions to the issue. The project's completion progress has reached 83.38 per cent as of May this year, on track to meet its completion target of December 2026. Darwis emphasised that 2025 marks the most critical phase of the project, with the installation of communication, information, and signalling systems now underway at the Kota SAS (Sultan Ahmad Shah) Station and soon to proceed simultaneously at other stations. However, since the installation of the systems began in March, the ECRL has been plagued by cable thieves. Aside from Kota SAS, theft cases involving cables and several transformer units have been reported in areas such as Paya Besar/Gambang, Cherating, and Kuantan Port City in Pahang; Chukai, Dungun, and Kemasik in Terengganu; and Pasir Puteh in Kelantan. In other developments, Darwis said the first two Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train sets, along with two electric locomotives for freight operations manufactured by CRRC Dalian Locomotive & Rolling Stock Co. Ltd, are expected to arrive in Malaysia by the end of this year, with subsequent sets arriving in stages from April 2026. 'System and train testing and commissioning are scheduled to begin in June 2026. This is a crucial phase that will determine our readiness to begin operations,' he said. He also disclosed that 38 tunnels have been successfully bored along the project's alignment, with the final two — Serendah Tunnel 2 and the Genting Twin Tunnel — expected to be completed by the end of this month and early next month, respectively. Darwis also confirmed that all land acquisition work for the main ECRL track from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, to Port Klang, Selangor, has been fully completed, thanks to cooperation from the respective state governments. 'Only a few additional lots are needed to accommodate the electrification system, such as for Tenaga Nasional Bhd, but we've secured 100 per cent of the land acquisition for the main track,' he added. He added that ECRL's cargo services have received encouraging interest from logistics industry players, with early commitments totalling between 800,000 and one million tonnes for the first year of operations, which is scheduled to begin in early 2027. The 665km ECRL Project is the largest infrastructure project under China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Malaysia and is expected to enhance transport connectivity and catalyse economic growth along Peninsular Malaysia's east coast. — Bernama
