Eritrea: Call for Organized Visits to Historical Sites
A call has been made for organized visits to historical sites where heroic feats have been demonstrated by liberation fighters during the armed struggle for independence, with the aim of passing this legacy to future generations.
The appeal was made during a visit to the Meshalit and Genfelom trenches in Hamelmalo sub-zone on 17 May, as part of the 34th Independence Day anniversary celebrations.
The program was attended by over 1,300 students, Government employees, members of the Defense Forces, and residents of the administrative areas of Gizgiza, Wazintet, and Genfelom. Attendees received briefings from veteran fighters who had been stationed in those areas.
In their briefings, the veterans emphasized the heavy sacrifices made during the struggle and called for a deep understanding of the country's history, encouraging the youth to uphold and carry forward this national legacy.
The participants of the tour said that the program makes it special for it was conducted during the 34th Independence Day celebrations week and called for the continuation of such educational initiatives.

Eritrea: Programs in Connection with Martyrs' Day
Various programs in connection with Martyrs' Day, 20 June, have been conducted in Asmara from 16 to 18 June. The National Confederation of Eritrean Workers conducted a popular campaign at Asmara Martyrs Cemetery, along with cultural programs and support initiatives for martyrs' families. The campaign at the Martyra Cemetery was attended by 160 workers from the central office and affiliated workers' confederations. At the cultural program organized at the confederation's central office, Mr. Tesfay Girmay, Head of Administration and Finance, stated that over 80 members of the central office have been supporting eight families of martyrs since 2024. In related news, the cooperative association of members of the 52nd Division organized a program in connection with Martyrs' Day at the Meshalit historical site on 17 June. The event was attended by members of the association and youth workers' organizations. At the event, veteran fighters provided briefings on the heroic feats demonstrated by the then 52nd Division of the EPLF in its 1988 battle against enemy forces at the Meshalit Front. Meshalit Front is located 30 km north of Keren. The cooperative association of the 70-16 Division also conducted a popular campaign at the Barentu Martyrs Cemetery, which included tree planting and environmental sanitation activities. Eritrea: Prayer Service in Connection with Martyrs' Day
Prayer services and sermons in commemoration of Martyrs' Day were held at St. Michael Church and Al-Khulafae Al-Rashideen Grand Mosque in the capital city, Asmara. In the morning hours, a prayer service was conducted led by His Reverence Abune Basilios I, 5th Patriarch of the Orthodox Tewahdo Church of Eritrea, along with heads of various dioceses and other Church leaders. Religious leaders from the Catholic and Lutheran Churches also participated in the service. During the event, Abune Basilios delivered a speech emphasizing the profound significance of the day and the solemn responsibilities it entails for every citizen. Merigeta Mulugeta Simon from the Office of the Patriarch, indicating that the martyrs paid their precious lives for their people and country, urged citizens to renew their pledge to live up to their expectations. Similarly, in the afternoon hours, Salat and Dua services were conducted at the Al-Khulafae Al-Rashideen Grand Mosque, led by Sheik Salem Ibrahim Almukhtar, Mufti of Eritrea. Sheik Salem Ibrahim said that the martyrs are our heroes who sacrificed their lives for independence, national sovereignty, and for us to live in peace and harmony. A Filipino American lawmaker in New Hampshire, Rep. Luz Bay, delivered a strong speech on the House floor after being asked why someone who called the Philippines her 'home country' was allowed to serve in the U.S. legislature. Bay, a Democrat representing Strafford County District 21, made the statement a week after commemorating Philippine Independence Day during a House session. 'A week ago, I spoke at this very podium about the Independence Day celebration of my home country, the Philippines,' Bay said in the video. 'Shortly after my speech, I was asked how someone who calls the Philippines my home country is allowed to serve in this House.' 'I want to respond, not just for myself, but for the thousands of immigrants, new Americans, and children of immigrants, who contribute every day to the strength of this state of this country,' she added. She responded, 'Let me say it clearly: I am here because I belong here,' Bay said. 'My constituents in Strafford County District 21 elected me under the same laws, with the same legitimacy, as anyone in this room,' she said. 'My birthplace does not make me less American. My accent does not disqualify me from public service. And my identity as Filipino American does not make me aghast.' Bay highlighted America's immigrant history, adding: 'Unless you are Indigenous to this land, unless your ancestors walked here before borders, before colonization, before the concept of immigration even existed, you too are descended from immigrants. 'Some of our families came centuries ago, others came fleeing war, poverty, persecution, or simply searching for the promise that America holds. My story is part of that American story. It is not the footnote. It is a verse in the song of this nation,' Bay said. Bay ended her speech by affirming her identity and what America stands for, saying it is 'a place where democracy is enriched by diversity, where freedom means the opportunity to serve, and where strength lies in our shared commitment to justice, not in the sameness of our origins.' 'I represent my district with pride. I serve this state with integrity, and I stand in this chamber with the full rights and responsibilities that come with my being an American,' Bay said. 'This is my home. This is my country, and I'm not going anywhere,' she concluded.
