Against the backdrop of a shortened season, players trickling back from injury has been a welcome boost for Te Wānanga o Raukawa Pulse and their expectations of a successful ANZ Premiership netball campaign.
Refreshed and repaired after a lengthy lay-off following ankle surgery, sparkling midcourter Whitney Souness made a successful return when going on to play three quarters of last week's opening round match while adding to the Pulse's playing stocks for their clash against the Mystics in Auckland on Saturday.
Speed, agility, deft footwork and pin-point feeds are all part of the pivot's trademark skills and after several months of inactivity, she was quickly back into her work, defying her time away but conscious of needing to raise the bar against a well-credentialled Mystics.
Both teams had opening round wins.
'After their first game, they'll be on a high and seeing them play, they've got flair, speed and experience, so they'll be ready to play hard,'' Souness said of the impending clash. 'We've just got to stop them early, bring the intensity from the first whistle and really take off from the outset.
'It's going to be tough, it's going to be fast, it's going to be physical and they'll bring it but we'll bring it too.''
Injured when playing for the Silver Ferns in the second test of the Taini Jamison Trophy series against England last September, Souness eventually underwent a total ankle reconstruction to repair the two ligaments, one of which was hanging upside down.
The mercurial little midcourter mirrored her on-court presence with immaculate timing through her five months of rehabbing.
Having just two pre-season hit-outs for limited minutes in the two weeks preceding the opening round of the ANZ Premiership, the plan of being ready for Round 1 couldn't have worked out any better.
'I'm really grateful for all the support from our physios, coaches, trainers and team-mates to get me there,'' she said. 'I probably just started doing court stuff about five weeks ago and up until then had not done any.
'Getting rid of a few cobwebs was important in that first game and just getting used to playing netball at that intensity and that level again. It wasn't just about me having to find my feet back on the court but also finding my netball mind, that took a bit of adjusting.
'Because I've been loaded and managed for a bit on the court, I haven't been able to train fully some days but I'm back to normal now, so hopefully from here, with more game time and more full trainings, I'll find my full confidence and be able to just keep pushing.''
The down time has given Souness a complete mental and physical break from netball, from which she has returned refreshed and invigorated.
Having started a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Samoan Studies, some years ago, she has returned to the books with relish, completing four elective papers during summer school.
Souness has welcomed the injection of former Australian Diamond midcourter Gabi Simpson and shooter Amorangi Malesala, as temporary injury cover, both adding to a vibrant Pulse mix.
'Gabi just brings a different intensity that we're not used to, so it's really cool having her in the group, her experience, her speed and her netball head,'' Souness said. 'There's lots to learn from her and she's always got some good feedback that we can take in and improve from. She's bringing real of value to this group.
'Having Amorangi come in and have an opportunity to play is great for her and both she and Gabi did really well in our first game. They've been training hard, they really want to be here and they're making their mark.''
Souness was happy with how the Pulse adjusted to the new rules in the first round, particularly the two-point shot, expecting as time goes on with more practical game-time experience, there will be refinement according to what works best and what doesn't.
The match will be screened live and free to air on TVNZ 2 and TVNZ+ at 4pm on Saturday.

The Mystics won 63-51, with stand-in goal shoot Sophia Lafaiali'i starring with another brilliant display. It was a more dominant performance than their two point win over the same rivals on Monday . The latest win sees the Mystics overtake the Tactix at the top of the ANZ Premiership ladder, though the Christchurch-based team can regain number one spot if they beat the Stars in Christchurch on Sunday. Lafaiali'i, who has come into the team in recent weeks for the injured Donnell Wallam, played like a cool veteran, not missing a shot until the third quarter. She nailed 47 of her 49 one-point attempts and one from three for her super shot attempts. Filda Vui backed her up with 12 points. Lafaiali'i would have been thankful for the slick feeding from her team-mates. Match stats told a story, with the Mystics having 23 more shots at goal and a centre pass conversion rate of 82 percent, compared to just 58 percent for the Magic. The Mystics led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter and never let go of it. They dominated strongly early in the second quarter before Ameliaranne Ekenasio and Saviour Tui launched a super shot blitz, with Tui landing four straight. It was 30-27 to the Mystics at half-time, 46-40 after three quarters, and they outscored the Magic by six points in the final stanza. Tui and Ekenasio were accurate for the Magic but they didn't get nearly enough opportunities due to the strong defensive efforts of Michaela Sokolich-Beatson and Catherine Hall. Photo: © Photosport Ltd 2025 Tui shot 16 from 17 of her one-point attempts and seven from 10 of her two-pointers, while Ekenasio was 100 percent with her 17 one-pointers, and landed two from her five two-point shots. Mystics midcourter Tayla Earle said the team was pleased to improve on their display on Monday, and said they had learned from that. "We have been talking about trying to apply pressure earlier so we don't have to rely on our big backs in the circle, so I am proud of the girls," she told Sky Sport. Magic coach Mary-Jane Araroa took some heart from an improved performance from Monday's effort, but rued a lack of timing and connection from her players. "We can't stay in the eliminations with those kind of stats," she told Sky Sport. Showing greater consistency, the Northern Mystics led throughout to retain their grip on the Hobbiton Cup with a deserved 63-51 win over AVIS Magic in Hamilton on Saturday. In a short turnaround after the two teams played each other just six days ago, resulting in a dour 40-38 win to the Mystics, both sides focussed on control and ball retention after their previous match highlighted an excessively high turnover rate. With the Magic decked out in green and yellow to signify the traditional Hobbiton Cup match between the two sides, the home side were left relying on the two-point shot after falling behind on the scoreboard. The Mystics enjoyed 23 more shots at goal and despite the Magic having a high accuracy rate, volume of ball proved the difference. The Mystics were more consistent overall and able to rally when the home side produced a flurry of two-pointers. Despite Saviour Tui hitting a sensational seven super shots for the Magic, it was all too little too late with the Mystics providing a telling last quarter to snuff out any hopes of an ambush from the home side. Both sides presented with predictable starting line-ups, the Magic retaining the seven they have used throughout the season while the Mystics also adopted a similar strategy. Replacement shooter Sophia Lafaiali'i was awarded her straight start while captain Michaela Sokolich-Beatson remained in the goal defence role. In a contrast to their previous match-up, both teams showed promising execution on attack with improved flow and accuracy in an evenly-contested opening stanza. The Mystics in-circle defensive pairing of Sokolich-Beatson and Catherine Hall continued to impress with their ability to squeeze the Magic shooting pair of Ameliaeranne Ekenasio and Saviour Tui, who responded well through movement and aerial athleticism. The Mystics enjoyed a slightly higher possession rate but with a 100 percent shooting return the Magic were well in the contest when trailing 13-11 at the first break. Injected at wing defence for the Mystics on the resumption, Holly Rae had immediate impact when quickly picking up a turnover and an intercept as the visitors made a forceful 9-3 run with Peta Toeava and Tayla Earle taking charge of the midcourt. That prompted a tactical timeout by an increasingly frustrated Magic ahead of dramatic shift in fortunes as the second stanza unfolded. With Oceane Maihi and Erena Mikaere lifting their defensive output, the Magic's shooters also struck a purple patch. Trailing by 11 and looking in a heap of trouble, Ekenasio with one and Tui, four, rose to the occasion from the super shot zone. Rapidly trimming the deficit with their ability from range while maintaining a 100 percent shooting accuracy, the Magic were hot on the Mystics heels when trailing 30-27 at the main break. After an even start, a similar pattern developed during the third quarter, another Mystics burst giving the visitors' the slightest of edges to keep the Magic at arms-length. The ability of goalkeeper Hall to create turnovers remained a point of difference while at the other end the promising Lafaiali'i defied her limited time at the elite level with an accomplished outing and remaining unruffled as she continued to rattle in the goals. Captain Ekenasio and Maihi were industrious toilers for the home side, the Magic once again resorting to two pointers in the final five minutes to bridge the gap. Tui and Ekenasio obliged with one apiece but couldn't find the same reward as they did in the second quarter as the Mystics forged a decent but not unattainable 46-40 lead at the last break.

It is always easier to get back to business after a big win. The Southern Steel are riding high after beating the Northern Stars 62-46 last week, a victory that will have helped the team's confidence. Steel coach Wendy Frew said it had been a tough couple of weeks after three consecutive losses, and she was proud of her team's performance. "Really happy with the girls stepping up against the Stars and getting the win," Frew said. "We put some good netball out there and obviously also have a couple of things to work on. "A timely win for us and just keeps us in the hunt." Defensively it was a big step up from her back three, who picked up eight intercepts and 13 deflections, and their defence on the centre pass lifted another notch. Shooter Aliyah Dunn continued her dominant season, only missing one one-pointer, and one two-pointer, and Frew commended her performance. "She definitely is playing her best netball, I think," Frew said. "It's actually through so much hard work, she's doing extras two, or three, times a week. "Just really happy that all her hard work is actually paying off for her and you're seeing that on the court. "At times I think we can even look into her earlier. "She's got such a powerful hold and we'll see at times that we'll give her balls that aren't quite in the right space and ... she's putting her body on the line to pull those in." Co-captain Kate Heffernan also made her first start, after being sidelined for the opening rounds with a knee injury. The Silver Fern midcourter played only the first half as she builds back through managed minutes but provided a calm figure to lift her team. "It's been tough for her, she's been such a professional in rehab to get back on to the court," Frew said. "There would be other players throughout New Zealand who had that injury that wouldn't have been able to get back on the court like she did." Confidence will be crucial for the Steel this week, as they make the trip to Wellington to meet the Central Pulse on Monday. The sides' previous tussle was a game the Steel would rather forget; they lost 70-45 back in round four. "We know we didn't perform nearly our best. "For us, we've had a good look at it. "You obviously debrief games, and we've moved on and now we're looking to see how we can change our game plan up slightly and make sure we come out a different team than we were when we played them in Invercargill." It is a must-win game for both teams in the scheme of the ANZ Premiership this year, which has been cut back to 10 games. The Pulse are third on the ladder with a record of three wins and three losses for nine points. They lost 61-50 to top-of-the-table Mainland Tactix last week and 64-51 to the Northern Mystics the week before. Wing attack Whitney Souness leads the competition with 153 centre pass receives and shooter Amelia Walmsley has been accurate from the one-point range. The Steel are fifth on the ladder with a record of two wins, and four losses, for seven points. Kimiora Poi sits third for feeds with 196 and defender Carys Stythe leads the league for deflections (32) and defensive rebounds (15) and is second for intercepts (13).
