Donovan Solano homered twice and drove in five runs, helping the Seattle Mariners outslug the Chicago Cubs for a 14-6 victory on Sunday. Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 31st homer for Seattle on a hot and windy afternoon at Wrigley Field. Dominic Canzone went deep twice as the Mariners won the rubber game of a weekend set that featured a total of 21 homers for the two teams. Raleigh connected in the first inning against Colin Rea (4-3). The two-run drive to center field was his fourth homer of the series. Seiya Suzuki homered twice and drove in three runs for the Cubs in their third loss in four games. Kyle Tucker and Reese McGuire also went deep for the NL Central leaders. Chicago trimmed Seattle's lead to 5-4 when Suzuki hit a two-run shot off Logan Gilbert (2-2) with two down in the fifth. It was Suzuki's 20th homer of the season. Seattle responded with two runs in the sixth. Canzone hit his second solo homer of the day, and Julio Rodríguez added a run-scoring groundout. Solano made it 9-4 with a two-run shot off Chris Flexen in the seventh. Solano went 9 for 14 in the series with eight RBIs. On Thursday against the Milwaukee Brewers, the speedy outfielder smashed another home run. This homer marks the 20th of the season, which puts him in rare company. Advertisement Crow-Armstrong is now the fourth fastest player to accomplish a 20-20 in a single season, smashing 20 homers and stealing 20 bases. It took him just 73 games, putting him right behind Fernando Tatis Jr., who did it in 71 games back in 2021. The record will stand for a very long time, as Eric Davis did it in just 46 games in 1987. We may not see a hot start like that ever again. In 1998, Jose Canseco did it the second fastest in 68 games. What Crow-Armstrong is doing is great for the game. The Chicago Cubs needed another rising star in the outfield, and acquiring him from the New York Mets for Javier Baez proved to be a win for Chicago. He is making plays in the field and at the dish. The outfielder is roughly 180 pounds and has elite power with his swing. Only six hitters reached 20 home runs this season, and Crow-Armstrong becomes the 7th. Crow-Armstrong is on pace for 40+ home runs this year, and his 4.3 WAR is the best in the National League and second-best to only Aaron Judge (5.2). The next highest WAR in the NL is Shohei Ohtani and Tatis Jr. at 3.4. The Cubs need Crow-Armstrong to continue his elite season to further establish the Cubs as the top team in the NL Central Division. At 45-28, the Cubs are 6.5 games up on both the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds. Led by the young star, the Cubs have the best run difference in the MLB at +107. The Brewers may gain a game on the Cubs on Thursday, as they are currently winning 5-2 in Chicago in the bottom of the 4th inning. He hit 545 of his 609 career home runs with the team. And Sosa is the only player in the history of baseball to hit 60 home runs in three different seasons, all with the Cubs. Most famously, Sosa hit 66 home runs in 1998 while competing with Mark McGwire for the single-season home run record. McGwire edged him out, finishing the campaign with a then-record 70 homers. However, Sosa led the majors in RBI (158), runs scored (134) and total bases (416), winning National League MVP. In his second year with the team, Crow-Armstrong has displayed his rare combination of power and speed, putting him on pace to join the 40/40 club. Only six players in MLB history have hit 40 home runs and stolen 40 bases in a season. And Sosa isn't one of them. Speed was an element of the seven-time All-Star's game early in his career. But Sosa's base-stealing prowess had tapered off by the time power suddenly began dominating his game. However, Sosa did record two 30/30 seasons. Crow-Armstrong is already up to 20 home runs and 23 steals through 73 games this season.
