Croatian PM Andrej Plenkovic gifted PM Narendra Modi a reprint of Vezdin's Sanskrit Grammar, highlighting historic cultural ties.
Croatian PM Andrej Plenkovic presented Prime Minister Narendra Modi a 'special gift": a reprint of Vezdin's Sanskrit Grammar, highlighting the historic cultural ties between Croatia and India through this significant work on Indian languages and culture.
The work, by Croatian scientist and missionary Filip Vezdin during his stay in India, was presented to PM Modi during his visit to Croatia, marking the first-ever trip by an Indian Prime Minister to the country.
Vezdin's Sanskrit Grammar is the first printed Sanskrit grammar written in Latin in 1790 by Croatian scientist and missionary Filip Vezdin during his time spent in India.
Croatian Prime Minister Plenkovic took to social media to highlight the historical and symbolic importance of the gift given to PM Modi. 'I presented to the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a reprint of Vezdin's Sanskrit Grammar – the first printed Sanskrit grammar, written in Latin in 1790 by Croatia scientist and missionary Filip Vezdin (1748-1806), based on the knowledge he gained while living in India from Kerala Brahmins and local manuscripts."
He added that Vezdin was among the first European scholars to deeply engage with Indian languages and culture.
Responding to this, PM Modi posted on X, 'Thank you, Prime Minister Plenković. This is indeed a remarkable symbol of the enduring intellectual and cultural bonds between India and Croatia! May these bonds get even stronger in the times to come."

Prime Minister Modi also presented an exquisitely handcrafted gift to Croatian PM Plenković and President Zoran Milanovic during his visit. As a symbol of India's rich artistic heritage, PM Modi gifted a handmade Pattachitra Painting to Croatian President Zoran Milanović.
Pattachitra is a beautiful traditional art form from Odisha, known for its detailed and colourful paintings on cloth. The name comes from 'patta" (cloth) and 'chitra" (picture).
Welcoming PM Modi to Zagreb, Plenkovic said in another post that the Indian leader's visit came at a crucial geopolitical moment and marked the beginning of a new chapter in the political and economic cooperation of the two countries. He added that India was one of Croatia's key Asian trading partners, with bilateral trade amounting to USD 242 million last year.
He added that trade figures for the first quarter of 2025 had risen by 10%, and highlighted the increasing number of Indian tourists travelling to Croatia.
Croatia and India signed agreements to enhance cooperation in areas like agriculture, science and technology, culture, and university partnerships. Plenkovic expressed interest in deepening ties in ICT, pharmaceuticals, and maritime transport, highlighting Croatia's strategic location as a Mediterranean gateway to Central Europe.
PM Modi was presented with the book 'Croatia & India, Bilateral Navigator for Diplomats and Business", written by Croatian diplomat Dr Sinisa Grgic as part of the ceremonial exchange. The book offers a comparative overview of the two nations and highlights their diplomatic and business engagements. Plenkovic said that the book symbolised the achievements of both countries and expressed hope that it would further inspire cooperation and deepen bilateral ties.
PM Modi stated that India and Croatia would collaborate closely in defence, security, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, IT, renewable energy, and advanced technologies, with potential future cooperation in shipbuilding, semiconductors, and connectivity.
In a post on X, Plenkovic also extended his condolences to the Indian people and the families affected by the tragic Air India plane crash near Ahmedabad.

PM Modi leads India and the world in IDY celebration

New Delhi, June 21 (UNI) The celebration of the International Day of Yoga (IDY) on Saturday witnessed an overwhelming global participation, from India's borders and remote villages to bustling cities and embassies abroad. The day was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who performed yoga at the iconic Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, addressing a massive gathering of over one lakh yoga enthusiasts. Modi highlighted that yoga is not merely an exercise but a holistic way of life, transcending boundaries, backgrounds, age, and abilities. He further emphasised the unifying power of yoga, noting that it has now been embraced by 175 countries, marking the global acceptance of his proposal for IDY in 2015. Joining the Prime Minister at the venue were Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy CM Konidela Pawan Kalyan, underlining the yoga's cultural significance. To mark the day, President Droupadi Murmu took part in a yoga camp held at the Police Line in Dehradun, highlighting India's pivotal role in promoting yoga on the world stage. In fact, throughout the country, the spirit of unity was palpable as ministers, government officials, organisations both from public and private sectors and people from all walks of life participated. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla led celebrations at Parliament, while Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh took part in a session with 2,500 soldiers in Udhampur, Jammu & Kashmir. He praised yoga for its role in enhancing mental clarity, discipline, and control — critical qualities for the armed forces. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel celebrated the day respectively at Prahladnagar Garden in Ahmedabad city and Vadnagar town of Mehsana district, the birthplace of the Prime Minister, while at Kartavya Path in the national capital, Union Health Minister and BJP president JP Nadda led the mass yoga demonstration, emphasising yoga's global significance in ensuring balance between the body, mind, and spirit. Nadda's colleagues in the Ministry, Prataprao Jadhav and Anupriya Singh Patel, called yoga as an invaluable gift from India that connects the body, mind, and soul for holistic well-being. In states like Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim, and Madhya Pradesh, officials and citizens embraced yoga with a deep sense of belonging and peace. J&K LG Manoj Sinha participated in the 11th International Yoga Day in line with the Common Yoga Protocol, while Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang led a session in Gangtok, promoting wellness in the northeastern region. Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, attended the event at Modhera Sun Temple, Mehsana while senior officials at the Geological Survey of India (GSI) preferred to choose its iconic geo-heritage sites such as Bhimbetka Rock Shelters in Madhya Pradesh and Mangampeta Barytes Deposit in Andhra Pradesh. At the same time, Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, celebrated the day near the riverfront at Maa Samaleswari Temple Complex, Sambalpur, Odisha with officials, dignitaries and residents of Sambalpur joining him at the session. Similarly, over nine lakh cadets of National Cadet Corps (NCC) participated in synchronised yoga sessions at iconic locations across the country from Leh in the North to Kanyakumari in the South and from Dwarka in the West to Tezu in the East at iconic spots, as well as in public parks, schools, and colleges across the country, according to the government statement. The enthusiasm wasn't limited to India. Indian embassies worldwide hosted grand events, from Tokyo, where Yoshiko Ishiba, the spouse of Japan's Prime Minister, joined in, to New York's Times Square, where hundreds took part in a vibrant yoga session. Washington, DC also marked the occasion with a large turnout at the Lincoln Memorial, demonstrating yoga's universal appeal. In their posts on X, Indian embassies in Qatar, Nepal and Kuwait among many others also highlighted celebration of the D Day by organizing the events in their respective countries. UNI TEAM PRS

Indian Workers In Israel Being Forced To Return? What Government Said

New Delhi: The government, putting an end to rumours, said that no Indian workers in Israel would be forced to return to their home country. "A message circulating on social media claiming Indian workers in Israel would be forced to return to India or face jail/fine if they register with the Embassy of India is fake," the Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv said today. It asked citizens not to "believe or forward such misinformation". "Always rely on official updates from @Indemtel (Embassy of India, Tel Aviv) for accurate info," a post on X said. The embassy said that the "registration of Indian nationals in Israel is to enable the Embassy to reach out to them not only in times of crisis but also to help them avail of the various facilities and welfare schemes of the Government of India". This comes amid a heightened tension between Israel and Iran, who have been launching fresh attacks on each other, killing scores of people on both sides. The latest crisis between the longtime foes started more than a week ago when Israel, under its 'Operation Rising Lion', conducted multiple strikes on the territory of Iran, with Tehran also returning fire after warning Israel. Last week, the embassy asked all Indians in Israel to stay vigilant and avoid any unnecessary movement while adhering to the safety protocols issued by the Israeli authorities. Indians have been employed in Israel for decades, thousands as caregivers looking after elderly Israelis, while others work as diamond traders and IT professionals. But since the war in Gaza escalated in 2023, recruiters have launched a drive to bring Indians in for Israel's construction sector also. The drive was a part of the Israeli government's effort to fill a void left by tens of thousands of Palestinian construction workers barred from entering Israel since Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack. Meanwhile, Israeli Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, has said that his country is in "constant contact" with the Ministry of External Affairs on the subject of the evacuation of Indian nationals from there amid the escalation of conflict with Iran. On Wednesday, India announced the launch of 'Operation Sindhu' to evacuate its nationals from Iran.
