Three jailed for aiding organised crime
KOTA KINABALU (June 13): Three men were sentenced to five years in prison by the High Court here today for assisting an organised crime group in committing a serious offence for material gain.
Sugumaran K. Ponniah, 56, a self-employed man; Hasran Magin, 46, a fisherman; and Subramaniam Thangavelu, 56, a teacher, pleaded guilty to charges under Section 130W of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years upon conviction.
The trio committed the offences between April 26 and July 4, 2024, at a bank branch in the city. The court ordered their sentences to run from the date of their arrests.
Sugumaran was represented by counsel Dominic Chew, Hasran by Azhier Farhan Arisin, and Subramaniam by Datuk Ram Singh and Prem Elmer Ganasan.
Meanwhile, seven other individuals — contractor Josepin J. Langkan, 38; pensioner Nasir Abdul Rasid, 60; bank managers Irene Chin Nyuk Thien, 38, and Christina @ Caroline Pianus Etip, 53; Vireonis Jonok, 35, unemployed; pensioner Leong Hin Ping, 62; and Mazlani Jenuary, 53, unemployed — will have their cases mentioned on July 18.
They are separately charged under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code with being members of the organised crime group, allegedly led by Josepin. The charge provides for imprisonment of between five and 20 years upon conviction.
The alleged offences occurred at the same bank branch between April 26 and July 10, 2024.

Lim stated that the prosecution had proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt, while the defence failed to raise any doubt regarding the charges. He also said the prosecution successfully proved the important elements, including that the victim died as a result of injuries; the injuries were inflicted by the accused with intent under Section 300(c) of the Penal Code; and both acted with common intention. Court's Sentencing Rationale In passing sentence, the court emphasised that although both defence lawyers made earnest appeals, the cruelty experienced by the victim could not be ignored. The court also took into account the type of injuries and how they were inflicted over an extended period of time. Earlier, both accused were convicted under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years, and if not sentenced to death, shall be punished with caning of not less than 12 strokes. Lawyer Datuk Ram Singh represented Mohammad Ambree, while Datuk Seri Rakhbir Singh represented Etiqah. Wanted man hauled to court for 2016 concealment offence
KUALA LUMPUR: A spare parts salesman who had been on the police wanted list was brought before the Sessions Court today to face a charge related to an offence dating back to 2016. Mah Kian Dong, 38, claimed trial to a charge of concealing RM104,000 in cash belonging to a businessman, Soh Chin Huat, 53. The amount was allegedly deposited into a bank account registered under Mah's name. Mah is accused of committing the offence at a bank in Sri Petaling on July 4, 2016. He was charged under Section 424 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of five years, a fine, or both, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor M. Saravanan requested that the court set bail at RM30,000 with one surety and fix a date for mention. Mah, who represented himself as he did not have legal counsel, appealed for a lower bail amount, citing financial hardship. "I am unmarried and live in Ipoh with my mother. I earn RM2,000 a month and cannot afford the proposed bail sum. "My employer is here today to help post bail. I kindly request the court's assistance in reducing the amount," he said. Judge Azrul Darus set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and fixed July 23 for the submission of documents and the appointment of counsel.
