36 detained in raids on three premises in Sungai Petani

SUNGAI PETANI: A total of 36 individuals, aged between 28 and 32, were detained during a raid on three premises around Jalan Kampung Baru near here early this morning.
Kuala Muda police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said the raids, carried out between 2 am to 5 am, focused on an entertainment centre suspected of running prostitution activities involving foreigners, as well as a retail shop and a restaurant.
'Those arrested include 15 men and 21 women — 20 of them from Myanmar and one from India, who is believed to be the owner of the premises.
'None of them possessed valid travel documents, and the entertainment premises were found to be operating without proper licences,' he said in a statement today
He added that during the raid, there was a scramble to escape but all were arrested by the raiding team.
'Also seized were musical equipment, liquor and cigarettes, suspected to be untaxed... all believed to be used during activities at the premises.
The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act, Sections 55B and 6(3) of the Immigration Act, Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963, and Section 6(2) of the Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment.

Kota Kinabalu: Some 187 illegal immigrants were detained in three separate operations conducted by the Sabah Immigration Department on Wednesday. The operations were carried out in two squatter areas and a construction site in Inanam, Luyang and Telipok. Advertisement Sabah Immigration Director Datuk SH Sitti Saleha Habib Yusoff said the simultaneous operations from 1am involved 108 officers and personnel. She said a total of 260 individuals were inspected, resulting in 187 of them detained for committing offences under the Immigration Act. 'Those arrested comprise 41 men, 43 women, 56 boys and 46 girls from the Philippines as well as an Indonesian,' she said in a statement. Sitti said all detained were taken to the Kota Kinabalu Enforcement Division Office for the documentation process as well as further investigations under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not having identification documents. According to her, the department has conducted a total of 765 operations this year. She said some 15,092 individuals were inspected in the operations, with 2,777 illegals detained, while 6,290 individuals have been repatriated to their countries of origin. She urged the public to channel information related to illegal immigrants to the department for immediate action. Members of the public, especially employers, are advised not to protect or employ illegal immigrants as they would face legal action. Senior citizen arrested over dog-dragging incident

Kuala Muda police chief Hanyan Ramlan said the suspect was picked up by police from his home in Bandar Puteri Jaya at 8pm yesterday. SUNGAI PETANI : An 82-year-old man has been arrested to assist in an investigation into a viral incident in which a dog was dragged behind a motorcycle in Bandar Puteri Jaya near here. Kuala Muda police chief Hanyan Ramlan said the man was picked up from his home in Bandar Puteri Jaya at 8pm yesterday. 'Police seized a red Honda EX5 motorcycle, a set of keys and road tax, and a white helmet. 'The man was brought to the Kuala Muda police headquarters for further investigation. Checks revealed that he has no criminal record,' Hanyan said in a statement today. He said the elderly man was found to be suffering from dementia and memory loss, but admitted to dragging his pet dog although he could not recall why. 'Further investigations are ongoing under Section 428 of the Penal Code, and the dog will be handed over to the veterinary department once medical treatment is completed,' he said. In the video which has been circulating online, the dog could be seen tied to the back of a moving motorcycle, being dragged along on the road. Bystanders eventually stopped the rider and intervened.
