
Wet-and-wild finish to National Endurance six-hours of Killarney
Conditions became so bad that the race had to be halted for nearly an hour.

The weather was lousy, but the racing was incredibly good.
That is how enthusiasts will remember round three of the South African Endurance Championship connected by Vodacom 4U, at the Western Cape Killarney circuit on Saturday.
Race halted
The Killarney Six-Hour race was held in almost never-ending rain, with icy cold conditions adding to participants' challenges.

In fact the event, scheduled to run for six hours, had to be suspended for 40 minutes in the middle due to near zero visibility.
After all of which the top three cars were covered by less than 30 seconds when the chequered flag fell, making this the closest South African Endurance racing finish on record.
Overall results
The eventual overall winners were Xolile Letlaka, Stuart White and Axcil Jeffries in the Into Africa team's all-new Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo 2.
They were followed by the Adjust for Sleep/Rico Barlow Nova Proto NP2 of Nick Adcock, Michael Stephen, Louis Maurice and Jonathan Thomas, with the Stradale Audi R8 GT3 Evo of Charl Arangies, Arnold Neveling and Brad Liebenberg completing the podium.
All three crews survived spins and lurid aquaplane episodes, while slowly but surely pulling away from the rest of the field.

The lead changed numerous times depending on pitstop strategies and safety car interventions, of which there were eight in all, as the conditions challenged drivers.
The weather cleared for just more than two hours in the late afternoon, but the rain returned with a vengeance as darkness descended over Killarney.
With 30 minutes to go, Jefferies pitted the Lamborghini from the lead due to a puncture, and the team dropped to third with the Nova leading followed by the Audi in second.

When the Lamborghini returned, a final safety car came out with 15 minutes remaining, the clock ticking down and the top three covered by 2.7 seconds.
When the safety car was withdrawn, Jeffries immediately pounced on the Audi, snatching second and set off after the leading RBR Nova.
Lap by lap, he closed in until, with 20 seconds remaining until the end of the race, Jefferies passed the Nova for the lead, with the Audi crossing the line third.

Behind the leading trio, the father-and-son team of Albert and Oliver Hintenaus brought their Coastal Engineering Supplies Ligier P4 home in fourth place overall despite numerous spins.
They led home the factory Backdraft Roadster of Steve Clark and Mike McLaughlin, plus the Pesty Backdraft of Harm and Barend Pretorius, whose sixth place overall brought them the Class D honours.
Gavin Rooke and Richard van Heerde brought their Dutchman Browndeck Backdraft home in seventh position.

Eighth place overall gave Denver Branders, Robert Maudant and Mark Futcher (Bluff Meat Supply Backdraft Roadster) the coveted Index of Performance trophy.
Ninth overall after a remarkable run on semi-slick tyres throughout the race, the Combined Honda Civic Type R of brothers Paulo and Ricardo Loureiro took the class C honours, a lap ahead of the G-Rasteirinho Backdraft of Andre Bettencourt, Pedro Garcia, Remi Guigue and Cristian Bouche.
A brilliant maiden Class B win and 11th overall was just reward for Sergio Alvares, Pieter van Heerden and Marco da Cunha, who enjoyed a trouble-free run in their Sphere Toyota Altezza.
Mario da Silva and Fabienne Lanz brought their Backdraft Roadster home in 12th overall, comfortably ahead of Dan Hirsch and Stuart Kidgell's similar machine.
The Scuderia Rossi Alfa Romeo Guilia QV of Mario Rossi, Werner Vonk and Regard van Zyl suffered a broken differential bracket just after the two-hour mark, which took 50 minutes to repair.
They soldiered on and salvaged 13th place and second in Class B.
Fourteenth overall was the father-and-son duo of Roberto and David Franco in their Graphix Supply World Volkswagen Polo GTI.
The final classified runner was the Team Qhubani Backdraft of Fikile Holomisa and Xolela Njumbuxa who suffered a slipping clutch.
One-hour sprint
Damian Hammond (Liqui Moly Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo Evo 2) won the One-Hour Dash from Andrew Horne (Xena Chemicals Ligier JS49).

Taking third was Wayne Roach (Samlin Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo), ahead of Marius Jackson (Porsche 911 GT3 Cup), Mo Mia (Porsche 911 GT3 Cup) and Byron Mitchell in his Old Boys Ligier JS53 Evo.

The next round of the Southern African Endurance Series connected by Vodacom 4U will be the Four Hours of Kyalami on 26 July.

National Extreme Festival gives the Zwartkops faithful their wish
First winter months round of this year's series promised action and delivered the heat. Great weather and excellent on-track action greeted spectators at the Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria on Saturday, when the venue hosted round four of the National Extreme Festival Presented By Coca-Cola. Touring Cars Top billing belonged to the South African Touring Car championship brigade, with 22 cars facing the starter. Race one went to Keegan Campos (Campos Transport BMW 128ti), chased to the flag by Michael van Rooyen (Gazoo Racing Toyota Corolla), Julian van der Watt (Chemical Logistics Volkswagen Golf GTI) and Nathi Msimanga (Gazoo Racing Toyota Corolla). Race two was red-flagged almost immediately when the Chemical Logistics BMW 128it of Andrew Schofield and the Campos BMW 128it made brutal contact at the turn two hairpin. ALSO READ: National Extreme Festival gives it its all at Aldo Scribante Both Campos and Schofield got their vehicles out of the sand trap and, with a brand new race declared, could rejoin the grid. The new race then ended behind the safety car under double waved yellow flags after Siyabonga Mankonkwana went off in the ultra-fast turn one and parked his Investchem Toyota Corolla deep in the sand trap. After all of which van Rooyen won, followed by Saood Variawa (Gazoo Racing Toyota Corolla), van der Watt and Msimanga. Tait won race two ahead of Moore, Da Luz and Khan. Toyota GR Cup The Toyota Gazoo Cup Racing brigade again produced top spectacle, with close racing in all three classes. GR driving instructor Devon Scott (GR Yaris) took the opening dealership Cup race from Mario da Sousa (GR Corolla), Werner Venter (GR Corolla) and Paul de Vos (GR Corolla). Scott, da Sousa and Venter filled the Dealership Cup race two podium as well, followed by. Nadil Abdool (SuperSport) took both media event victories, leading home Phuti Mpayane (TimesLive) on both occasions, with Kyle Kock (CAR Magazine) placing third in race one and The Citizen's Charl Bosch in race two. The first GR86 race went to Jason Coetzee, ahead of Kent Swartz, Khya Nggenya and Justin Rogers. Coetzee won race two as well, chased by Swartz, Nggenya and Brandon van der Walt. The Audi RS Q8 is a high-riding supercar
A memorable throwback came across my social media feed this week. Eight years ago this month, we organised an interesting gathering of four exotic, open-air performers for a shootout. All were quite dazzling, of course, but there seemed to be a closer rivalry within the showdown between two contenders: the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracán, the two spiffy in Spyder form. While the car with the raging bull on its nose offered the obvious visual flamboyance, it more or less matched the substance wielded by the four-ringed option as the two were largely identical underneath, down to the shared V10 power sources. The kicker was that the Audi cost about half as much. The average buyer in this realm is not likely to rationalise decisions in such a way. If you want a Lamborghini and can afford it, the cheaper option is irrelevant. But for savvy purchasers who might want to fly under the radar and have some leftover change, Audi holds appeal for its low-key performance wares within the Volkswagen Group, viewed against the picks from Porsche and Lamborghini that share ingredients. The Q8, particularly in S and RS iterations, is good proof of this. By now you know that the Volkswagen MLB platform underpins the model, in addition to products such as the Touareg, Porsche Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus. It is a proven architecture that has demonstrated versatility, served in a wide assortment of expressions, from plain vanilla (a cushy Touareg 3.0 TDI) to the fire-breathing V8 RS Q8 Performance we recently tested.

The Audi RS Q8 is a high-riding supercar
With the hammer dropped all the way, the 4.0l motor spits out 471kW/850Nm, with a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.6 seconds. We have tested faster from Audi — the electric RS E-Tron GT comes to mind. But this offers a different sensation entirely. Old school and visceral, the mechanical symphony that happens as pedal depression translates to pace is something to savour. On a hard launch, you can feel the Quattro system gripping as it sends the hefty RS Q8 from rest and towards road-shredding higher velocities. To say accessing its full performance capabilities is foolproof might be an overstatement because even with its leech-like all-wheel drive system, the RS Q8 could be a lethal weapon in overzealous hands. One needs full sensitisation to its weight and deceptively brutal acceleration before getting into a proper, comfortable rhythm of dynamic driving. A tag of R3,265,100 is what the model goes for, before options and individualisation. This includes a five-year/100,000km maintenance plan. For reference, the Lamborghini Urus begins at R4,875,000 while the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT comes in at R4,506,000.
