Dressing celebrities, getting ‘star struck' and a hobbit door – not even a rainy start could dampen the spirits of traders at Bloom

For traders and visiting groups, there have been plenty of highs and lows.
From florists to the man behind a 'hobbit door', the Irish Independent spoke with those behind the stands for their peaks and pits of Ireland's favourite festival.
For Anita Reynolds, owner of Anita Reynolds Art and Design, the high point was happening across sustainability advocate and former landscape designer Mary Reynolds, who was the youngest woman to win a Gold Medal at The Chelsea Flower Show.
'I saw her from a distance and said 'Oh hello Mary!' As if I knew her because I follow her online, but she was so lovely and she called over and bought a picture. I was star struck,' she said.
Ms Reynolds produces ceramics and textiles inspired by the natural world in Meath where she is based.
'I use embroidery technique, batik and hand stitching to create a lot of my pieces that are inspired by Irish lambs, birds, fauna, flowers, and also history. I love historical monuments, so some of my work is inspired by relief carvings also,' she said.
While the rain on Thursday was a bit of a damper for the businesswoman, she has had more sales and enquiries this year than her two previous years at the festival.
'On Thursday I had to take cover by the food stalls, the wind even made it difficult to eat. All the same, the footfall was amazing. Friday was probably my best day, but today has also been great for business,' she said yesterday.

The Institute of Flowers, Ireland's only professional organisation for florists, was also at the festival this year. It's the organisation's first year at Bloom.
Jenny Murphy of Flowers by Moira, and chairperson of the Institute of Flowers, who holds a gold medal from the Chelsea Flower Show from 2012, is passionate about empowering florists across Ireland.

'We only launched the organisation in October and so we're here to raise awareness for professional floristry and create more of a community. We're all making connections to further our skills and for florists to support each other,' she said.
Throughout the five-day festival, the institute has been creating buttonholes and other wearable arrangements.
'We've given thousands of them out over the past couple of days. Everyone's donated their time. And then the whole staff has been sponsored by suppliers which has been great,' Ms Murphy said

Philip Gaffney of O'Gowna, a handmade Irish gifts business, was also among the stands this year. The family business based in north county Dublin creates handmade chess sets, fairy doors, figurines and more.
For Mr Gaffney, the highlight of the weekend was chatting to the public about his 'hobbit door' he created for the festival.
'I've loved the honest reaction to it. We had a family come up to our stand and the mother later sent me the photograph she took of her three little girls sitting in front of the door. It just melted my heart to see them enjoy it,' he said.
The rain was also an issue for Mr Gaffney on Thursday, not for lack of sales, but because customers didn't have as much time for a chat.
'The people are so lovely. Not everyone buys something but everyone stops and chats and says hello. It's a very uplifting experience,' he said.
Another satisfied trader is Suzanne Clarke of Clarke's of Dublin, which sells handmade soaps, men's shaving products, candles. She has also enjoyed interacting with the crowds along with checking out what Bloom has to offer.
'It's been great to meet the makers, the clients that come into us and to chat with the creators of the gardens,' she said.
Ms Clarke's business is inspired by her great-grandfather's role in the 1916 Rising with her use of traditional typography and classic style of packaging.
'Lots of people have been buying for Father's Day the past few days, with the shaving soap and shaving bowl a big hit. I got the idea from when I used to watch my Dad shave when I was young. Our lavender soap sells all day long too,' she said.
Ms Clarke said she struggled to chat with buyers when she first started coming to the festival, ut now in her fifth year, business is bustling and she is a seasoned Bloom trader and loves mixing with customers.
'These days I love speaking with people and picking up on the buying trends for different products,' she said.

Breaking Daa issued with enforcement notice over breaching passenger cap

Fingal County Council has issued an enforcement notice to the operators of Dublin Airport for breaching the cap of 32 million passengers a year. The local authority has given daa a two-year period to comply with planning conditions imposed by An Bord Pleanála in 2008, when they granted planning permissions for the construction of Terminal 2 and the extension of Terminal 1. They said the action was in response to complaints they received that the conditions were breached in 2023 and 2024. Fingal County Council Planning Authority's Enforcement Unit initiated a formal investigation to assess compliance with the conditions and issued daa with a warning letter. In a statement, Fingal County Council said it acknowledges the "operational complexities presented". However, it said the information submitted by daa does not constitute sufficient grounds to prevent further action. A spokesman said: "The two-year period provides an opportunity for daa to progress their planning applications to increase passenger capacity at Dublin Airport or take such other steps as they consider appropriate to achieve compliance." A spokesperson for daa said the enforcement notice showed the need for the planning system to be overhauled. "The fact that Fingal County Council is sending us an enforcement notice regarding 32 million passengers when passenger numbers will be north of 36 million this year and heading towards 40 million before the end of the decade is a sorry indictment of the mess that is the Irish planning system, particularly when it comes to the most vital piece of transport infrastructure on this island," the spokesperson said. They added: "The system is quite simply broken and needs to be overhauled urgently. "Until that happens our national airport is hamstrung and can't get on with its mandate to grow Ireland's connectivity. The passenger cap on Dublin Airport needs to be removed once and for all and the airport needs to be reclassified as national strategic infrastructure, with decisions made by a national planning body and not a local authority." "When it took up office, the Government committed to acting speedily to identify and implement a legislative solution that would remove the passenger cap from Dublin Airport. "The Minister has since also said he will bring forward legislation to solve the cap issue, dispel uncertainty and maintain connectivity for Ireland - and this can't happen quickly enough."

McDonald's Restaurants of Ireland generates its revenue from the chain's franchisees in Ireland, who between them operate about 95 outlets. The parent firm divested its last directly-operated store to a franchisee in February 2022, so all the McDonald's restaurants in Ireland are now operated by franchisees. The chain opened its first outlet in Ireland in 1977, on Dublin's Grafton Street. The latest set of accounts for McDonald's Restaurants of Ireland show that its turnover dipped 1pc to €84.4m. Its administrative expenses fell by €8.5m last year to €22.5m. That was also a result of a reduction in accumulated depreciation due to a reassessment of its tangible fixed assets. The company did not pay a dividend last year, leaving it with accumulated profits of €34.6m at the end of 2024 and shareholder funds of €114.2m. It had paid a dividend of €51m. Last November, McDonald's announced that it would create 1,000 jobs in Ireland over the next four years as part of a €40m expansion plan. McDonald's directly employed 8,880 people in Ireland as of 2023 and its business resulted in indirect employment of 1,605 jobs, according to a report compiled for the group last year. McDonald's is one of the biggest buyers of beef in Ireland. In March, McDonald's received planning permission for an additional two outlets in Co Tipperary and Co Wexford, despite objections to the plans. The group is facing more competition in the quick service restaurant sector here. Rivals including Wendy's, Popeye's and Taco Bell are all muscling into the Irish market. Wendy's is planning to open 10 restaurants in Ireland within the next two years in a partnership with Corrib Oil. In 2022, Wendy's – which is headquartered in Dublin, Ohio – said it was actively seeking franchisees in Ireland as it continued its international expansion. Taco Bell is opening its first restaurant in Ireland this year, in Cork. It has teamed up with Applegreen to launch the outlets. The single largest McDonald's franchisee in Ireland is Amir Afsar, who emigrated from Iran about 20 years ago, first to the UK and then to Ireland. He operates about a dozen outlets in Dublin, including the chain's outlet on Grafton Street. The company behind his restaurants generated revenue of €52.7m in 2023 and made a pre-tax profit of €4.7m that year. It had accumulated profits of €19.6m at the end of 2023. Last year, one of Ireland's most successful McDonald's franchisees, Gerry Hayden, sold his business for €20m to another operator. Mr Hayden operated five McDonald's restaurants in Dublin and was a franchisee for almost 30 years. Another major McDonald's franchisee in Ireland is Elaine Sterio. She also kickstarted her career at McDonald's, getting her first job at the chain at its Grafton St store in 1989. She began working full-time for the group when she finished her studies.
