'I built Ikea's Billy bookcase in 9mins - men always make the same mistake with flatpack'
A woman has been crowned Flatpack World Champion at the Grand Designs Live show in London. The DIY expert from Wigan gives her tips on how to successfully assemble furniture – and reveals what men got wrong in the competition
A woman who can build a Billy bookcase in under nine minutes has been crowned the first ever Flatpack World Champion – and claims she won because men never read the instructions.
'It was such a brilliant day and I am absolutely thrilled,' says Hayley McAuley, 37, from Wigan, who was awarded a golden Allen key by Grand Designs Live host Kevin McCloud.
Up against blokes who fancied themself as DIY experts, Hayley says, 'They were putting things in the wrong places. And some of them were missing screws and lots of them didn't even finish.
'There was a guy next to me on my first build, one of his pieces was missing and he was looking for it, it was sitting by me, so I picked it up and gave it to him!'
The Flatpack World Championships, which is in its first year, saw eight competitors speed build flatpack furniture at the opening of Grand Designs Live at ExCel London on Friday.
The contest was split into two timed rounds and involved participants making Ikea Billy bookcases – and then in the final making a bedside table. Ikea says its Billy bookcase takes an hour to build for most people, but Hayley managed it in under nine minutes.
Then the flatpack queen took just nine minutes and 33 seconds to build the bedside table – quicker than most people take to realise they're missing a lock nut – and demolished her male opponent.
'Kevin was trying to talk to me but I was so focused on doing my job,' she says, and admits it was nerve-wracking building in front of a big audience at the show. 'It was a lot of pressure, I mean, I was shaking.'
It was the first time Hayley had been to Grand Designs Live, and she made a trip of it by coming down for the day from Wigan and staying overnight. She says, 'When I first heard about the competition from my friends, I jumped at the chance to enter as I've always thought I'm a bit of a machine when it comes to building flatpack furniture.'
Factory worker Hayley loves assembling furniture so much, she even does it professionally now as Hayley's Flatpack Assembly Service after posting pictures of her own self-assembled furniture on social media.
Hayley, who lives with her bricklayer partner Martin, is now currently building a shed, but says she's always been handy with an Allen key.
'When I was a child I went to Lake District with my mum and dad and I built our six-man tent! My dad says I once came in from playing and he was building a wardrobe, and apparently I stood there for a couple of minutes then said, 'It's on upside down that.'
And Hayley revealed the secret of her success. 'Read the instructions. Not doing so sets you up for failure. And get all your screws and everything out together and ready. It's all about staying calm.'
But even Hayley has found her build nemesis. 'I tried to build a kids trampoline in the rain once – and it's not difficult, but it was hard work.'
Grand Designs Live host Kevin McCloud congratulated Hayley, saying, 'It was great fun and hugely amusing. And wonderful to see who took this seriously, and who accidentally sabotaged their own attempts to win!'
There's no doubt this will turn into a very popular annual event, and already Hayley is planning on wiping the floor with the blokes again. 'I will definitely be there. It was such a fun day,' she laughs.
This is the 20th Grand Designs Live and the show runs until Monday May 5.

Singer Miley previously said of her father's new relationship: 'I'm being an adult about it. 'At first it's hard, because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, 'Yes, that's your dad, but that's just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy'. "My child self has caught up.' The former Disney Channel star said she puts her now-resolved issues down to her closeness to her mother Trish — who had been Billy Ray's second wife after he divorced Cindy Smith in 1991. She told the New York Times podcast: 'My mum really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard. 'I think I took on some of my mom's hurt as my own because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain.' Elizabeth Hurley risks wardrobe malfunction on date night with Billy Ray Cyrus
Elizabeth Hurley risked a wardrobe malfunction as she stepped out in London with her boyfriend Billy Ray Cyrus as he was in town supporting his daughter Miley Elizabeth Hurley has been spotted loved up with her boyfriend Billy Ray Cyrus as they went to Covent Garden together. The duo were seen in London together as they went to support the musician's daughter Miley. The duo were out and about on Saturday as they jetted to the capital for the weekend to watch The Miley Cyrus Something Beautiful theatrical experience at the Odeon Theatre. They looked as loved up as ever after announcing their relationship back in April. The pair were also joined by Elizabeth's son Damian, and Miley also made an appearance herself. Elizabeth looked as glam as ever as she wore a multicoloured sparkly wrap mini-dress along with a plunging neckline and shoulder pads. While Billy went for a red printed oversized shirt with distressed jeans and boots. Damian wore a black ripped mesh long-sleeved top and leather trousers as he joined the couple. Billy and Elizabeth first crossed paths when they were working on 2022's Christmas in Paradise before confirming that they were an item in April. Billy previously revealed that Liz had reached out to him during a tough time, which became the trigger for their romance. He said: "I felt like, 'Wow, can life get any harder? Can it get any tougher?' For me, at a certain point, it was like, you can't get knocked down any flatter than lying on your back when life is kicking you. And in this moment... a friend reached out." Billy Ray said Elizabeth's message said something like: '''Hey, it looks like life might be a little bit tough and just wanted you to know I'm in your corner; you've got a friend in your corner'." Billy said he didn't have the number saved and was baffled by who was behind the message. He said: "So, I text back, I go, 'Who is this?' And it's like, 'Elizabeth Hurley.' Of all the people to reach out to me in that second that maybe I needed most… this friend who made me laugh." In an interview Breast Cancer Research Foundation's Hot Pink Party in New York City, Elizabeth talked about what some people have called an odd coupling. She told Page Six: "I think people found Billy and I being together a little surprising. "It's not surprising to me because we're actually quite similar and get on extremely well. There has been quite a reaction." She then went on to talk about what the couple have in common, she said: "We both like to laugh a lot, and we both love the country. And we both love country music, both love movies. We've got a lot in common — and cowboy boots, definitely."

Glasgow artist's mission to send Billy Connolly mural copy
Not in the flesh, but on the boards on which the artist, Conzo Throb, painted the mural of the legendary comedian in the city centre earlier this year. The boards have been reunited with him, and he plans to give them a new home, he's also set himself the mission of getting a copy of the artwork to The Big Yin. Conzo put together a heartfelt personal package with a handwritten letter and a copy of the artwork and has sent it to Billy in safe hands. Glasgow artist's mission to send Billy Connolly mural copy (Image: Colin Mearns) READ MORE: Amazing new mural of Billy Connolly appeared in Glasgow He spoke to us about the inspiration behind the mural, which he says has "changed his life." Conzo, 37, explained: "It was two funny men that started this fire in me to make this. Billy Connolly, obviously, and the late great John Byrne. "I've had this idea for years of painting Billy Connolly naked specifically, because I was dared to by my flatmate and friend, Panda, to paint a mural next to a big Billy Connolly mural that already exists, and it didn't feel right at the time. "A great wall appeared outside where Dishoom is going to be on Nelson Mandela Square, and it triggered the idea that the time was right to paint this mural of Billy's bare a**e huge on a big 18ft by 16ft canvas." Conzo says the mural has changed his life (Image: Colin Mearns) READ MORE: New mural of Still Game star appears in Glasgow city centre He goes on to credit Billy's book, Windswept and Interesting, for helping him get through a "really tough time" in the past few years, and how learning about the comic's life let him "give himself the permission slip" to follow his dreams. Conzo also took ideas for the mural from the book, he said: "In Billy's book, in the very first chapter, he talks about his love of being naked, the absolute freedom of it, and I figured that's just a beautiful thing to have painted. "A very funny one as well, and to paint it without permission makes it even funnier, and to get away with it and even have people tell you that they loved it and cheered them up was an unexpected but definitely pleasant surprise." Conzo had help from friends and fellow artists Ciaran Globel and Panda, with whom he recently opened their art gallery, Grateful Gallery, in Garnethill. He took some inspiration after the idea had formed from John Byrne's 2002 painting of Billy that hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Conzo said: "In the very left corner was a very small painting of Billy streaking naked, and I just thought it was hilarious because I had a core childhood memory of Billy being naked on the TV, and so do a lot of people." John Byrne was born in Paisley and studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1958 to 1963. He worked as an artist, playwright and theatre designer. Speaking about the special package he's sent to Billy, Conzo said: "When he opens the tube, he'll get this beautiful big newspaper with the front page of his bum that made it the next day. "So, hopefully it's going to bring him a big laugh. That's what I'm hoping for. "First thing, he's sipping his morning tea, and then he just gets this beautiful package of just a good self-portrait of him being naked and just gets a big laugh. "That's the ultimate goal." Conzo sent a package including a personal letter to Billy (Image: Supplied) READ MORE: 'I'll crawl across the line if I have to': Dad to run 95 miles in memory of son Conzo continued: "And yeah, I wrote him a nice little personal letter just appreciation and telling him why I did this as well as about how he and his best pal John Burn totally inspired me and helped change my life route completely over the past three years." "He's helped many people, but it really helped me just give myself a permission slip to chase this whole dream of being an artist and not feeling bad about it or having to ask others if I'm allowed to do certain things. "So, it's just a big ode to these legends. It's like a two-in-one. It really is." Conzo has big plans for the mural boards (Image: Colin Mearns) READ MORE: 'Goodbye for now': Popular West End pub announces temporary closure Now that he's been reunited with them, Conzo hopes to have the boards displayed in public again or auctioned off for charity. The People's Palace is his ultimate goal, for the work to be displayed in the same place as Billy's big banana boots. Conzo's favourite part of the mural is the nipple ring, he explained: "In his book Windswept and Interesting, he talks about how he got his nipples pierced just for fun. "And when he did a movie, he had to take them out for a swimming scene. And throughout this movie, filming in the ocean, his wounds healed up, so he could no longer have his nipples pierced. "I just love that story. It's just funny, it's a nice little detail, it's the tiniest part of the whole mural, and it's a little sparkling, beautiful thing."
